Quote from: DM Van Helsing
((Apologies for the delay. The flu knocked my off my feet yesterday.))

The vistani has a big grin of self-confidence on his face.

"Any of you gents care to give it a try?"

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius looks at the vistani, "if you think I'm crazy enough to step into that death contraption you, my fine friend," Marius looks around to the shadows, "you are out of your mind. The only way I'm going to get in there is over my dead body," Marius says full of pride.

Realizing he may have just issued a challange he adds, "but we don't really need to test that theory. Not that you could, vistani magic or no vistani magic. I am me after all and that's not an easy position to fill. Think of all the people who would miss me," he says with much gusto and the biggest grin.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
The casket lid opens. Ioan is there, unharmed. He blinks away the mist and looks around

"Marius, Hassid, Adam..." he spies his friends, steps out and walks towards them so they can confer in a huddle.

"It's a doorway. I think it uses the mists. Whichever... I need to go back, and you all need to come back with me. It's safe, and Yemam is waiting for us."

Diplomacy=17

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid looked at Ioan.

He leaned up from the pole that he was resting against and walked over to Ioan. He then rested his hand onto his shoulder and looked at Ioan and the coffin. A hard longing look took his features as he looked at the small space therein.

"It may be so. But I cannot leave yet. May it be here in an hour then I will return and join with you." He then turned and walked away.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius listened to Ioan, then poked him, attempting to see if he is real. "Please my friend no offense is meant, but Land of the Mist, Vistani magic, enemies galore, you come and go, there is much trickery here, I don’t think my mind can take much more of this.”

Marius looked up to the sky above, “Dad. I really don’t know what to do here. Everything about the situation tells me that this is a trap. I know you always want me to make my own decisions, but if you’re watching, and I know you are, a hint would be nice.” With that Marius turned to Ioan, “and where does this ahh, doorway lead?”

Marius' attention split between listening to Ioan, wondering where Hassid went, and looking for hints from his dad, did not do anything for attempting to read any lies in Ioan's voice.

Sense Motive=3

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan sadly watches Hassid leave. Nothin' for it. He considers saying something along the lines of "you can lead a horse to water..." but stops himself. Hassid knows more about horses and water than anybody else Ioan has met.

He turns to Marius and Adam, and keeps his voice low.

"Marius, the Vistani we told you about, Raul... seems as helping him earned us some kinda boon. An' as always, the reward for a job well done is a more difficult job. The casket opens into a Vistani camp where I promise we will be treated real well, if not like heroes. Raul and Nikki are there, safe. But they need our help."

He gestures at the casket

"If you want me to go first, go between you, or go last, it doesn't matter. But I really need to go back, and I want you two with me."

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius looks at Ioan, "a more difficult job," and flashes a brash smile. "Words more true have never been spoken. Ok my friend, you go first and greet me there. I think I'm going to need a friendly face in a strange new place, besides who am I to refuse a dear friend. I know you are in much haste, but we should wait for Hassid, it would only be proper to stand by him as he has stood by us."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Hassad sets off on his own task. But Ioan's plea convinces the others. One by one, in whichever order you decide, they all travel through the mystery of the casket to the vistani camp.

The group finds themselves surrounded by smiling vistani faces. It is a good sized camp, perhaps 80 to 100 vistani from little children to bent elderly are around. Numerous colorful tents, painted wagons and festive decorations abound. The smells of cooking meat waft from a large fire nearby where cooks are preparing what can only be described as a feast. You are being given a heroes welcome. And it feels kinda nice.

Raul takes time to thank each one of you for saving the life of his son. He lets you know he is home. And he will be staying with the clan.

You can see the city of Karina from the forest where the clan is camped. You traveled no more than a few miles through the casket.

Finally, a woman who appears to be the eldest person around slowly makes her way to Ioan, "Son, we must have a deep talk. There is something you must no. And I will read the cards for you and your group. But first, enjoy!"

((If anyone wants to interact with the Vistani, please do. If no one does, tomorrow's message will be the beginning of this conversation with the vistani crone.))

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Will Save = 26

Never in his whole life has Ioan been treated so well, nor accepted so openly by so many. He keeps his composure, however, and enjoys the food and the music. With Raul's permission he bobs Nikki on his knee for a bit, and hugs the child before handing him back.

Charisma check=15

Miraculously, the baby doesn't wail at Ioan's touch.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid returned. About an hour later as promised with a set of saddle bags slung over his shoulder and a saddle across his back. The look in his eyes simply say don’t ask as he approached Marius. “Let us be off. If we return to this place…let us be off.” He then walks toward the casket and steps in awaiting his fate.

Though not having heard the explanation as to what to expect Hassid believed that he took it in stride. And though he was not ready for the camp, the joy and cheer of his reception was welcome. Even with his new found friends of a couple of days the city that he had left was not too much different than Sharuun. This was…different. Hassid simply didn’t know how to be received. So in the end he found a solitary log and accepted a drink and nursed it as he watched the fire and the people and Ioan play with the children. He expected many visitors, but his responses were half hearted as his thoughts seemed to be elsewhere as he oiled his saddle and tending to his other gear.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam generally talks with the Vistani in the camp, making sure not to cross anyone and has a good time feeling the warm energy coming from everyone, until he spots Hassid alone.

Yemam walks over to his friend and puts a hand on his shoulder. "Friend, are you okay? These people regard us as heroes. Now I know you were not with us when we rescued Raul and his son, but please enjoy yourself..." Yemam notices the strange look in Hassid's eyes. "I'm sorry...there must be another reason. Please...if you need to talk about something Locke and I will listen."

Yemam smiles warmly at Hassid.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Being away from the city eased Marius’ heavy mind, he took a seat next to Hassid and stretched his legs, “this … this is what I call paradise.” Marius smelled the air, felt the breeze on his face and through his hair. He managed to let his guard down for a second and took in the beauty of the outdoors. Hearing Yemam’s voice brought his mind sharply back to reality … I didn’t even hear him approach he thought to himself. See what happens when you let your guard down, what if that was an enemy. You'd be dead he heard his own voice in his head. He put up his guard again and oberserved the shadows, but glanced at the vistani and Ioan, for the first time since he met him a mere few days ago be at peace with himself, but his eyes quickly returned to the shadows.

Spot=12

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
By the time the wooden cups have been wiped and put away, the moon is rising over the treetops and stars are shining brightly in the evening sky.

The leader of the camp, a strong elderly man by the name of Vincenzo, whispers, "Moonrise, is the finest hour of the day."

A rather odd comment, considering the horrible things that come out by moonlight, here in Invidia and Ravenloft in general.

The cooking fires are banked, preparing for the morning, and the main bonfires are being fed by two beautiful young girls, each laughing merrily and jabbering to each other in their colorful language.

One by one, the vistani finish their various tasks about camp and join the growing circle around the fire. The elderly woman you met early, Eva, encourages Raul to play again, presenting him with a new violin. This one free from the curse that haunted his previous instrument. The smith takes a few tentative plucks of the strings, tuning the fiddle, before launching into a spirited melody, nothing like the melancholy dirges you've heard him play before. He's talented, no doubt, and the smile that spreads across his face shows how much he has missed this... his music. Some of you notice that Eva was tense as he began to play, but a smile also spreads across her old face and Raul has passed the test. She begins to clap her hands in time with the music.

Soon, all the vistani are clapping and singing. Other vistani have joined Raul with other folk instruments; one gent playing a stringed instrument similar to a guitar, another playing some kind of drum. A stunning young woman rises and begins to dance around the fire, shaking a tambourine to the rhythm of the music. She spins and twirls her skirt round and round until you dizzy just watching her. Suddenly, she comes to a stop just before you as a group. Gently, she sways before you, the slightest smile upon her lips.

"Who will dance with Gitana?" asks a nearby man. "Here is a rare invitation indeed!" The crowd responds with a cheer.

((If one of you chooses to dance, make a Perform: Dance check. If you don't have P:Dance, you can make a raw Dex check but take a -2 penalty for being unskilled.))

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius doesn't hesitate for a second, "who needs skills when you have raw talent like myself," he says with the greatest boast. Marius jumps up, bows deeply before Gitana, takes her hand and leads her in a circle around him. He then pulls her close, feels the rhythm of the music, and continues to spin her, dip when the moment feels right, pausing when appropriate to let her dance freely ...

Dex=15 (+2dex/-2unskilled)

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid nodded to Yemam "I know where your heart and your friendship is coming from my friend. But some wounds are too fresh to speak of without prolonging the pain. When the time comes I will remember your ears." All the while Hassid tended to his equipment making sure that all was as it should be.

When the time for festivities came Hassid continued to watch...but inadvertently ended up with a prime spot for watching and listening. Truth be told Hassid would have preferred the dirge, but Marius's antics did warm his heart a little.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan cheers Marius' dancing enthusiastically.

As Marius continues to dance, Ioan moves to Hassid:

"This is a fine end for your second day in the new world, friend. Learn to grab joy when it pokes its head up, because it often hunkers down and hides in these parts."

Ioan then rejoins the party with a food-still-in-the-teeth smile that would frighten children and single women and give indigestion to any inkeeper. Friends and Vistani can tell that he's just happy, and happy to BE happy.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Marius does well, earning boisterous cheers from the crowd. Much laughter and fun fills the air and despite the fact that you are out in the woods, a normally dangerous place, you feel safe and comfortable. At one point, the barker who helped you move from the market square to the camp through the 'casket of mystery' who smiles broadly at you. However, soon the fire burns low and the families begin to shuffle off to their wagons or tents.

Soon Eva and Vincenzo come and indicate you should follow them. Leading you over to an old vardo, each one of them knocks on the door exactly three times. After a pause, the narrow portal opens and surprisingly young woman steps out, dressed in layered skirts of many vibrant colors and intricate patterns. Her narrow, almost too thin, face is framed with night-black hair and her eyes burn like smoldering coals. She nods to the elderly vistani couple that led you to her, "It is time for the doroq," she says and approaches the waning firelight. "I am Marcella."

Vincenzo gets her a chair and it is odd to see the obvious respect that the older man, so clearly a leader of the camp, pays to this much younger woman.

She clears her throat, "You must have many questions. I will answer what I can. And then we have a favor to ask of you."

((Nice posts! Marius gets a mark for Boastful (which fills that row). Hassid gets a mark for Horses (I loved the email you sent - it also fills that row). I also recently gave Yemam a mark for his 'apparition' but forgot to note it here.))

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam takes in the happiness of the times. "Truely a time to be happy, huh Locke?" he says to the sky.

Listening to what Marcella has to say Yemam says, "My only question at the moment is what this favor is? I am sure after that is out then many more questions will fill my head."

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius thanks Gitana for the dance, "you are a spirited dancer my dear. I hope I will have the honor of another dance someday." He kisses her hand and bows deeply.

Marius walks over to Hassid, “my friend, whatever it is I hope that the company of someone who considers you a friend can help? Life only gives you a few of those moments,” he says somewhat out of breath. “I’m here if you need anything. I too have a heavy load on my heart.”

As the camp cleans up Marius follows the group, “well back to business,” he whispers to himself.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"Questions... yeah. The ones I'm most interested in getting answers for are the ones I don't think anybody can answer. I want to know why arcane magic and divine magic are different. I want to know what each of the gods thinks about the meaning of life, rather than hearing their clergy rattle off pat answers like mine. I want to know why there is evil in the world, and whether the struggle between good and evil is any less one-sided in the next life. I want to know if there IS a next life."

He stops himself just before getting into a really good ramble.

"Those are the hard ones, I guess. The easy questions are the ones I'm afraid we'll have to find answers to ourselves. Why do all of Lady whatshername's beaus drop dead? Who is 'The Child?' How can Captain Timothy's vile fights be done away with?"

He looks around...

"Yeah, that's all I've got. You've been so nice to me... to US... I don't need any answers to anything. Sometimes a good party and a safe night's sleep is answer enough."

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid turned to Marius and shook his head. "I am still new to this world and the threat of the unknown still weighs heavily. And aside from what threatens us I did something today that I am not sure that I agree with for the betterment of a friend. These are things that I must work through in my heart, But I have been shown that I have here what I did not have where I came from, friends in abundance and when the time comes I know where I can turn to lighten my heavy heart."

He then turns to the younger woman and shakes his head. "The questions of my friend do not burden me my dear as this world holds many similarities as the one I walked just a few days ago. Only instead of walking alone I now have friends to share the journey. And these friends have done something for one of your number before and as I see it will accept whatever favor that you may request of them, and as such my sword will be yours as well. As my friend here has stated there are many questions to be asked. But many of which the answers are little more than curiosity. Please ask of your request."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Eva laughs jovially at Ioan, "Your first questions are truly stumpers. Perhaps beyond even our ability to answer. But if you wish, I would be happy to read the Tarroka on your behalf when we finish the business at hand. In fact, that invitation is open to you all."

Marcella takes over, "As the the second set of questions, they are wise and I can answer. But first, let me tell two tales. They may answer the questions for you. If not, we shall address them again."

With this introduction, she launches into a legend, a history of the vistani. She is an accomplished storyteller and easily captivates you with her voice, painting vivid pictures.

"In peace and joy, all mortals lived among the gods, in a land of eternal light above the void. Together they shared a love of creation. Together they made the universe, in which to dance the prastonata," she nods to Marius, "and multiply. The gods created all the lands, while mortal forged many an artifact with which to tend them."

"But the gods reserved the creation of time to themselves, saying it was not a mortals' lot to have power over the past and future, but only to live in the present. Mortals were initially content with that lot, for the universe held everything they ever needed to live in peace and joy."

"Out of the void came dark powers, the shadows of the gods, who whispered in mortals' ears, telling them they would be gods themselves if they could control what had been and what would be. These shadows inflamed mortals' hearts with visions of power, and made them fearful of the gods, fearful of the lack of control over time. And at last, the mortals turned on the gods, and with the dark powers made war against the gods for all time. Only Manusa, mother of our tasque, defied her mortal kind and stood with the gods."

"Though the mortals and the shadows of the gods lacked the power to overthrow the gods, their destruction across the universe was terrible, which smote the gods to their hearts. In the end, the gods enabled Manusa to see the past and the future, that she might walk among the mortals and forecast the doom of their creation, and the end of the universe."

"Then the mortals were ashamed. Then they rejected the whisperings of the dark powers. They begged forgiveness of the gods, and the dark powers were driven back to the void from whence they came."

"When peace and joy returned to the land of eternal light, the gods regretted telling the secrets of time to Manusa, but they could not take back what had been freely given. So they joined with the mortals and drove Manusa from the the land, cast her into the void, and gave her to the dark gods who clamored for revenge."

But Manusa would not give up. Manusa would not die. Manusa wandered in the void alone, fearless of all beings, for she could see the future, and she foresaw that the gods and mortals would not coexist forever. Manusa saw that the spiteful gods would eventually cast all mortals from the land of eternal light, and abandon them in the universe they had created, and she laughed at the miserable fate of both gods and mortals."

"We are the children of Manusa! We are neither mortal nor divine. We are wanderers in the world and through the void. We are unknown to mortals and unfettered by gods. We are merchants on the road of time, selling the past to gods and the futures to mortals."

"We are the children on Manusa!"

The few vistani still around and listending, reply with whispers of "Koorah!"

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
((The second story is coming. Feel free to react to the first, if you feel it would be in character to do so. I'll get the story of Gabrielle up about lunch time.))

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan nods at the story. This isn't the first time he's heard some variation on the origins of the Vistani, but this tale rings truer than the ones painting them as demons.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
At this point, Eva pipes in, "At this point, we can tell you the story of Gabrielle Adrerre. We have to guess some since none of us were there at some of the specific points. But we have inside information and have managed to use vistani magic to uncover some truths. Gabrielle is my niece. Her mother Isabelle was my sister. But I will let Marcella tell the story."

Marcella nods, "Isabelle's life began like any other vistani. She was blessed with the power of the Evil Eye but it did not serve her well. As a young girl, the caravan she was traveling with was attacked by a Falkovian militia. It was thought that Isabelle had been killed. Unfortunately, that was not the case. She had been carried off and sold into slavery to a vile and evil man. This monster was fond of torturing his slaves, frequently to death. It was both a blessing and a curse that Isabelle's stunning looks spared her from those torments for her master choose different and unspeakable acts to force upon her. Her life with him must have been... difficult. Had it been me, I think I may have sought to end my life. Perhaps Isabelle did. We don't know."

"We also don't know much about the night Isabelle was able to escape. Out of respect for her and her privacy, we did not pry when she found her way back to us and returned, now several months pregnant with child. A child who would be known as Gabrielle. As is our custom, when the child was born, we read the cards to foretell the future of the babe. And the cards came back with doom writ large on them. Gabrielle must never know a home. Well, we are vistani. We interpreted that as proof that she was pure vistani, the blood of her father notwithstanding. And her later displays of the Evil Eye supported that. But the cards did not stop there. They indicated she should never know a man. While this is certainly a sacrifice, it was not the totality of her curse. The cards also prophesied that if she should ever have child, she would be destroyed at that child's hand. And this is where are story takes a dark turn for more than just the Aderre family."

"Isabelle decided that she would take Gabrielle and raise her on the road, away from the temptations of our vistani young men. She knew how we are looked upon by the giorgio. She hoped that this life would prevent the curse from coming true. Alas, that is not how it worked out. Gabrielle grew to a fiery young woman, chaffing at the extreme restrictions placed upon her by her mother. Isabelle would not tell her daughter about the monster that was her father. And as a result, Gabrielle fantasized about her father. We cannot know for certain, but I can imagine how she must have hoped her father a rich, powerful, dashing man who would someday show her the life she desired."

"The next part is hard to reconstruct. But I think the events must have played out in the following manner. Isabelle's body was found by a traveling vistani caravan. She was found with her wagon and most of her worldly goods. Gabrielle was not with her. Nor were many of her items of power, her Tarokka deck, her charms and amulets of magic. There was another body there. A werewolf... dead. After using our divination to look into the matter we believe that the beast attacked and took the women by surprise. They should have had sufficient magic to set up wards that would prevent the lupine from approaching, but it happens that all get lazy and inattentive. Perhaps Isabelle forgot to put up the wards, perhaps an angry Gabrielle knowing broke the wards. It doesn't matter. We think that in the initial attack, the werewolf was able to injure Isabelle before she could use her Evil Eye to paralyze the beast."

"But the Evil Eye would not hold forever. And her injuries must have been serious. She called to her daughter to come and slay the beast. But Gabrielle took advantage of this unexpected opportunity and demanded that her mother tell her of her father. Isabelle must have relented. And Gabrielle took the truth hard. We think she gathered her mothers possessions of value before fleeing. We know Isabelle cursed her daughter as Gabrielle abandoned her to that awful fate. The dark power consecrated the curse and etched the words into the mists. She said, 'The Mists take you, traitor. May you know our child's betrayal and realize too late the depths of evil inside it!" Gabrielle fled into the night. The werewolf eventually awoke from his spell and killed Isabelle. But she was able to kill him as well."

"The next we heard of Gabrielle, she had found her way to Invidia. She had caught the eye of the darklord of Invidia, a werewolf by the name of Bakholis. He was infatuated by the beautiful Gabrielle and took her as concubine. But Gabrielle has no intention of being the plaything of a beast. Or of risking the problems of a pregnancy and the possibility her mother's dying curse would come true. So, on the night he was to take her, she used her Evil Eye and enfeebled him. Using repeated applications of her power, she made him name her as his heir and then killed him. The night she slit his through with a silver night she cemented her imprisonment in Invidia as its new darklord."

"Years passed and Gabrielle became used to her cell. She took many lovers from among the nobility, using them on her terms and taking careful steps and the medicinal arts to prevent her mother's curse from coming true. That dying curse must have haunted her. For the curses of a vistani crone are powerful naturally, with the added weight of being the last words ever spoken and a mark of justice to boot, they are about the most influential curse imaginable."

"At this point, we must speculate again. Our divination can uncover little about the last man Gabrielle ever knew. We know he supplanted a foppish noble by the name of Matton. But we can tell nothing about him, his race or nationality. This tells us he is not likely to be human. But rather some type of dark power of the realm of Ravenloft. Gabrielle was probably overpowered with his magics. And nine months later, she gave birth... to a son."

"This is the part where the vistani return to the story. We have stayed away from Invidia for over a decade. Gabrielle did not look upon us kindly as gave generous orders that we as a people were to be treated harshly. But when our magics told us Gabrielle had given birth to a son, we knew we had to come and look into the situation. There is a legend among the vistani of the Dukkar. A man-child born with the power of the Evil Eye. It has long been prophesied that this Dukkar would be end of the vistani and that our vaunted powers and magics would have no effect on the boy. So you can imagine our horror when we determined that this boy, this offspring of a curse and a dark power, is the Dukkar. None of our divinations will tell us about the boy. We have seen him grow unnaturally fast with the eyes of our spies, like Ivan whom you met today. We cannot stop him. We need help."

"And here is the favor we ask. Giogoto, we hope you will return to Karina and destroy the Dukkar if you can. This night we have finished a ritual of power. No vistani can enter or leave Karina. We cannot go in... but the boy cannot leave. So, what say you? Will you help us?"

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius' jaw drops low, "wow ... wow, and I thought my past was dark, err ... " Marius realizes that he was once again thinking out loud. He looks around, “sorry.” "Ioan whatever you decide I'll stand by you." Marius puts his head down while his inner thoughts turn to punishing himself.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"If this Dukkar is the same boy in black who keeps spooking horses on crowded streets and turning wedding parties into duels to the death, then I think we were already planning to stop him. Knowing what he is... well, that just makes it more urgent. He's a threat to everyone, not just Vistani."

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid bows his head. For joy, and for the task at hand. This would bring many things together. It explained why Matton wanted to find Gabrielle, and if the child carried a bit of his dark power then what...he knew more than he had let on. And it also explained why he could go about with impunity.

"What more of the Dukkar? I assume that you are looking for us to kill the child, What can we expect from him what powers do you know that he wields? How would we find him, from our experiences his appearances are seemingly random. Should we begin with the mother? Or Matton? Or the child itself. And what of the mother? Is the curse still in effect, or would it still be with the downfall of the child?"

Hassid continues with a tactical mindset. As much as he hated to admit it killing is what he has been trained for and the more information that could be provided the easier. Perhaps he could now begin to use his skills for the good of people, than for the whim of dark gods.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius tried to interject but Hassid's tactical mind had everything covered. Ah, he's got this he thought to himself[.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam has a mixture of shock and amazement on his face. "This child...I knew....he was bad...news...but this..." His voice trails away.

Yemam nods in agreement with Hassid. "Aye...these questions my friends asks. I believe they are the most important."

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius watches as Yemam voice trails away, "my friend, do not fret, you have friends and won't be going at it alone. Besides ... dark child and all that ... you have me," Marius says with much bravado.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
At this, Vincenzo picks up answering, "I am afraid the Dukkar is a blind spot to us. We cam see anything, but not him. We know nothing of his powers. Nothing of his location, other than the generality that he is near his mother. Matton is nothing. An insignificant jilted lover. He's lucky he's not dead yet. And we absolutely believe that the Dukkar will destroy Gabrielle. But our magics tell us she is still alive and in her estate. The Cliff House, sometimes referred to as the Haptmayar Residence. It is easy to find, the home highest on the cliff overlooking the river."

((Feel free to ask more tactical questions if you wish.))

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"Vincenzo, ummm... my friends Hassid, Marius, and Yemam are much more... tactical thinkers than I am. I don't even know what questions to ask."

Ioan looks to each of his friends hopefully, his monobrow furrowing with what might be worry, or perhaps bad fish.

Quote from: Unkabear
There were more questions rushing through Hassids mind, but after learning what they could divine of the boy there were none that he would ask. "Are we to rest here this eve then return in the morning?"

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam's face is still a mixture of shock and confusion. "I...um...am at a completely stuck by all of this. I wouldn't mind seeing what the furture holds for us...or at least me."

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
"Anytime you battle the unknown the odds are truly against you, but in this instance we don’t really have a choice do we?” Marius put a comforting arm on Yemam’s shoulder, “not to worry my friend. Not to worry.”

Marius thought long and hard about seeing what the cards hold for him, especially about the accuracy that he hard heard of among the female Vistani. Ah, I already know what my future holds he thought to himself, “Ok I’m in. I think I’d like to see my magnificent future holds.”

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
"Thank you Marius for the comforting words. You truly have become a good friend over the short time we have known each other."

Looking into the sky. "Alright I'll tell him. Locke also thanks you."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The three vistani leaders nod gratefully, "It is highly unusual for outsiders to stay with a caravan. But in this instance, we will make an exception." Vincenzo says this with such an air of sincerity that you honestly think it was touch and go whether you would be allowed to stay or sent out into the night.

Eva snaps her fingers and a pair of young men rush off. While they are gone, Marcella rises and returns to her vardo. "Come one at a time and I shall question the powers that rule Ravenloft about your future." ((I'll be posting your reading, to those interested, in a private message to each of you.))

The two men return with a black velvet bag and a small wooden box. Eva reaches in to the bag first. She pulls out and presents, to each of you, a pendant with a bright blue stone - nearly violet in color. "These will help protect you from mind control. We believe that dukkar will likely have some type of power similar to our Evil Eye. These should give you strength."

Next she took the wooden box. Opening it, she took out five flasks. "Each of these contains a powerful drought that will help you if you find yourselves wounded." ((These are potions of Cure Serious Wounds.))

((Okay, if there is anything you want to ask/address the vistani, we'll take care of it now. As I said, over the course of the next day or so, I'll be posting your tarokka readings. If your PC hasn't asked, and you are interested, (right now it's Yemam and Marius), please post that here. Once that's done, we'll begin the road the Cliff House.))

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"If it's okay with my friends, I'd like to go first to Marcella's bardo."

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid accepted the charm and wore it around his neck. Any assitance that they could provide would be welcome, and the potion dissapeared into the folds of his robe. "There is a question that I would ask of the cards." Hassid said

-

Hassid wandered into the woods until he found a small clearing. Gently he stripped down to the waist and folded the clothing and set it down on a log. Then he unsheathed his blade the moon playing on its silvered surface and knelt in the clearing. There he meditated for a few minutes finding his center then uncoiled.

Hassid flowed with his blade back and forth all but in a trance. The Shurapoli mimicked the crashing of waves on the shore. Such a large blade was wielded as if it were weightless. Now as there is room to move Hassid used the full space in something that was akin to a dance. The blade flowed up and down and through hordes of invisible foes. In his mind though there was one opponent. Hassid was fighting himself. At least who he was. The secret of the Shurapoli opened more than just how to fight with the falchion. It opened within him potential. Before Hassid was a man who had done many terrible things in the name of a god that he did not worship. But now. Now Hassid had the potential to wield his masters blade for good. He was no longer under the thumb of Izrador or the Legates. Though it saddened him that he would not be able to carry on this fight against them, he was beginning to understand that he would be able to carry on that battle in this land.

Hassid did not measure the time that he was at one with his blade. Though it was early when he returned to camp to find a bit of sleep before dawn.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam smiles at Ioan. "Yes friend...go ahead. I can fill my time otherwise till my turn at fate occurs."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
((After some thought, I've decided to post these readings out in the main thread, unless I hear from each of you that you would rather not do so. I originally planned to do each of these via PM. But it just seems like a waste of the theater to do it individually. As such, I'm going to post the generic opening that applies to all three of you getting your future read; Ioan, Marius, & Yemam.))

You step into Marcella's bardo. The light is low, provided by a single candle sitting on a small, intimate table. The table is covered in black velvet, though it is worm thin in many places and shows signs of long use. Marcella sits on the far side of the table and motions in silence for you to sit.

As you do so, she pulls from her lap an old wooden box, polished smooth from the years. She places it next to the candle.

"Please open the box. We must first attune the cards to you aura and essence. Open the box, take the deck from it's place. Shuffle and cut the deck as you see fit. But please be careful. That deck has been in my family for over 400 years."

You open the box to reveal a beautiful deck of cards. The backs are an intricate design showing a river flowing from the edge to a horizon where is seems to flow into a full moon rising. A plethora of stars surround the moon. Two trees are in the lower corners. One is alive. The other is dead.

((Please describe how you shuffle and cut the deck.))

After you pass the deck back to Marcella, she places the deck next to the candle and asks you for one final cut. As soon as you remove the top portion of the deck and set it next to the bottom half, Marcella pulls the top card of the bottom half.

"This cards is the focus. It represents you. Who you are."

((Send me a 1d54 dice roll to pick your focus card.))

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius accepts the gifs and bows deeply. He places the pendant around his neck and hides the potion in a secure place.

Marius waits for his turn. He doesn’t think about the deck too much and simply cuts it, his mind to frightened about where he is and the number of shadows that now seem to have come alive wiith the lighting of the candle. Marius mind turns on him and begins to focus on all the horrid things that have happened to him, all the people he has lost whenever he gets close to anyone. “I know it will be different this time. Dad, please, please forgive me,” he speaks realizing at the last moment where he is, “oh sorry.” Marius puts his head down and chooses a card.

Card #21

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam accepts the gifts from the vistani and immediately puts the pendant on. He then waits patiently for his turn in the wagon.

Sitting down gently, Yemam takes the cards handed to him and idly cuts them by taking random sections of the deck and sticking them in random sections of the main deck. "Well...now we will see if my future is bright or dark. I'm personally hoping for bright." Yemam smiles as he hands the cards back to Marcella.

Card # = 18

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan accepts the pendant and the potion, considering each in turn.

When asked to shuffle, Ioan spreads the cards out face-down and mixes them in waves and circles clumsily on the table, spreading them further out and about before scraping them together into a pile. Finally he pushes the pile into a single stack.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Marcella reaches forward and takes the card Ioan selected.

"This card represents you. It stresses inner strength and self-reliance. Nothing can happen, either for good or evil, that does not begin within. Only by looking inward and contemplating that which resides in the heart can one hope to understand that which transpires around him. When read for good, it tells of a tranquility and self·reliance that transcends the outside world. When taken as a mark of evil, it depicts arrogance and egoism. Only you can decide which will manifest."

She picks up the deck and shuffles it quickly. Her hands move with ease and practice. Finally, she places the deck back on the table.

"Choose any card and place it between you and the focus card that represents you. This card represents the recent past."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Marcella reaches forward and takes the card Marius selected.

"This card represents you. It speaks of determination and effort. It does not portend initial defeat, nor does it suggest ultimate victory. Rather, it indicates only hardship and confusion that must be sorted through before any progress can be made. It governs all manner or research and deductions, often being equated with exercises in logic. It warns you to avoid making assumptions and to seek absolute proof of all things before believing them. It often notes that important clues or information has been overlooked in the haste to discover new truths. This card is important to all who investigate anything, from crimes to the supernatural."

She picks up the deck and shuffles it quickly. Her hands move with ease and practice. Finally, she places the deck back on the table.

"Choose any card and place it between you and the focus card that represents you. This card represents the recent past."

Marcella reaches forward and takes the card Yemam selected.

"This card represents you. It warns of deceit and falsehood in the marketplace. It hints that all is not as it seems in some manner of business transaction. Perhaps the goods being offered are not all that the vendor claims, or the customer is paying with counterfeit currency. Whatever the truth of the matter may be, this card reminds us that the buyer better beware and encourages merchants to keep a careful watch on his customers. Normally this is a negative card. Rarely, the merchant can indicate a positive side. In such light, it indicates a rare find in the market. Perhaps a merchant who does not know the value of his merchandise and is selling it at an unreasonably low price."

She picks up the deck and shuffles it quickly. Her hands move with ease and practice. Finally, she places the deck back on the table.

"Choose any card and place it between you and the focus card that represents you. This card represents the recent past."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Hassid waited 'til the others had come and gone. He approached the bardo still dripping in sweat from his earlier exercise. Sword, shirt and pack hanging off his arm as he tried to dry himself with a blanket offered to him for the purpose. He looked around like a young man first entering into a bordello. He was not surprised to find Marcella waiting. He could only assume that either she could read him so that it would show...or she divined it.

He followed the standard and gently took the deck into his hands and looked at it. Then with practiced ease of a man who tossed lots and dealt cards beneath the kitchens he shuffled the deck, cut it and gently handed the deck back to Marcella.

Then when asked to cut the deck again he reached over and took five cards off the top. "I simply wish to know if I will be reunited with her again."

Marcella nods and reaches forward to takes the card Hassid selected.

"This card represents you. This card is not as clear and solid in its interpretation as some others. It symbolizes the struggle of good against evil, but not necessarily good's eventual triumph. It must be kept in mind, however, that this card does not foreshadow doom. It refuses to answer the question of who will win. It is a sign that the outcome of your conflict between good and evil is difficult to predict and that chance will be the deciding factor. The iswordsman is reaching out to claim a weapon for himself, but we cannot say which sword it will be."

She picks up the deck and shuffles it quickly. Her hands move with ease and practice. Finally, she places the deck back on the table.

((First off, sorry to have been gone so long. Had less time/access than I thought over the Christmas season. But I'm back and should be posting regularly.

Second, I am changing my plans just a bit. I was planning on getting a new card each day and drawing out the fortune telling process over a little time to try and amp the suspense. I don't feel like that is working. Instead, it feels like it is dragging and pulling the energy out. That's not what I wanted. So, instead, in today's post to each of you, I'll ask for a total number of draws. Then, tomorrow (and probably over the weekend), I'll do and post each full fortune for each of you.))

Cards #15, 26, 8, 36, 10, 5, 9, 1, 47

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Ioan's Focus Ioan's recent past
"The next card represents what stands in immediate opposition to your goals."

Ioan reaches out a selects a card:

Marcella visibly recoils. "Oh no. I am so sorry. This card represents the betrayal of someone close and trusted. It can warn of a warrior who turns on those he is sworn to defend, a physician who abandons the medical code that he lives by, an unfaithful spouse, or a turncoat who provides information to the enemies of his own people. This card most likely means someone will betray you. There is a chance it means you will betray those who trust you. A slim but more positive light, this card can indicate that there is a weak link in the people employed by an enemy. Perhaps a minister who serves a tyrant can be convinced to join forces with those who would bring the tyrant down."

"The next card represents your far future. Your eventual fate, if you will."

Ioan chooses a card and Marcella reveals it:

The fortune teller looks at Ioan with open pity. "This card is the ultimate in dark magic and forbidden knowledge. It heralds the furthering of ignorance and the purposeful repression of the truth. All those who attempt to deny knowledge and learning to others are tied to this card. It also tells of those who draw their power from unnatural sources and who have dealings with the darkest fiends of the outer planes. This card holds special significance for those who treat with the most powerful of evil forces. It customarily indicates someone who is the master of such evil beings, but it can just as often indicate a person who has become a pawn of the dark powers that he thought to master. Your immediate fate is tied to a master of evil."

"We now look to your strongest support."

Ioan chooses again from her deck:

Marcella breathes a sigh, almost of releaf. "Ah, strong power aids you! This card indicates a hiddensource of information or a secret potential for good. It might be that this good will be within you or that you will soon come into contact with a new ally or creature of good intent. This card need not indicate a person, but could denote a beneficial magical spell, object, or even just a fortunate turn of events."

"Now select three cards that represent your distant past. These will mix to form the picture of where you came from."

Ioan selects three cards: , ,

"The elementalist stands for the natural forces of the cosmos and the ways in which they affect mankind. It heralds the ultimate triumph of nature over all man's works but also notes the ability of man to hold back nature's wrath and master the environment. It is a sign that some elemental force, be it a natural disaster, a sudden rain, or a herd of foraging animals, came into play in your past. Its meaning is not always negative, however, for it is frequently the precursor of good luck as well, heralding a bountiful harvest or successful hunting expedition."

"The charlatan does not normally bode well, for it invokes images of spies and tricksters. It can mean more positive things, of course, like an enemy who turns out to be a friend or ally, but it normally marks a foe where none was suspected. This card is a cautionary one, in either respect, for it reminds us to watch those around us carefully and make every effort to understand their motivations. In relation to your past, this means someone important to you is not whom you thought they were."

"As one might expect, the druid reflects the values of nature and the inherent divinity of the animal kingdom. Having no prejudice toward good or evil, animals act only according to their emotions, fears, and desires. As a sign of good, this often indicates spiritual health, a freedom from mental domination, and a release from controlling duties or emotions. When taken for evil, it tends to point toward an inner turmoil that disturbs the natural serenity of the mind. In some cases, it heralds mental illness or a similar disorder. It is often taken to reflect upon the wisdom of the individual, with a negative aspect Indicating that foolish decision may be
in the offing."

"Taken all together, it appears that you are mistaken about something in your past and that you come from a strong natural background. This is truly an interesting foundation. The final three cards reflect your ultimate fate."

Ioan pulls three cards: , ,

"The artifact brings to light the importance of some physical object. It might be an ancient and valuable ornate tome, a simple and unassuming gold ring or a bright and shining sword of light. Whatever the object, it is of unparalleled importance to you. The other cards will tell us more. It might be that this object is the primary weapon that its owner depends upon to defend himself or it could be the key to an enemy's ultimate defeat. Whatever the object, and whatever its role, this card marks it as a thing of absolute necessity."

"The torturer heralds the coming of suffering and merciless cruelty. It is the mark of the sadist and the wholly consuming evil of the nihilist. It symbolizes ultimate evil and the hand of the darkest fiends in the outer planes. No good comes of this card and it does not speak well for your fate."

"The last card, also often called The Victim, denotes a defenseless person who is of great importance. It is important to note that "defenseless" does not necessarily mean that the individual is weak or unable to fight off a potential foe. Indeed, it could indicate a powerful individual who is simply unaware of the danger he is in. More often, however, it tells of a person who will be unable to handle the events that surround him."

"It seems you will face true and utter darkness in order to protect the innocent. Look for a powerful artifact to aid you in your fight. May the blessings of the Vistani go with you."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Yemam's Focus Yemam's Recent Past

Marcella places the card and asks for another card, "This is what stands in your way at the moment."

Yemam taps a card lightly. Marcella flips it to reveal:

"This card represents anyone from thieves and bankers to merchants and beggars. Any who horde money, all who toil to earn it, and all who are denied it can turn to the cards of this suit in hopes of finding answers and their futures. Money will play a prominent roll your opposition."

"The next card will reflect the immediate future."

Yeman pulls a card:

"It marks research into areas that mankind was never meant to explore. It often predicts the discovery of some ancient lore that will bring evil or disaster upon those who study it. This card is often associated with grave robbers, for they trespass in realms forbidden to mortal men. Beware the offer of knowledge unearned."

"The next card will show that which supports you in your mission."

Yemam draws a card:

"This card marks a sudden change in economic status. Taken as a sign of good, it calls to mind the poor man who becomes rich. Sometimes this is not an unmixed blessing, however, for it may be that the new wealth is acquired only after great hardship. On the other hand, as an evil card, it warns of economic ruin or chaos. Again, this is not always a complete curse, however, for it may indicate that the rich man will discover a link to those less fortunate than himself that he had ignored or denied for many years."

"The next three cards will tell where you came from... to prepare you for your future."

Yemam pulls three cards: , ,

"The enchanter marks the determination of the scholar or wizard. It often indicates initial failure and hardship followed by the overcoming of challenges and eventual victory and enlightenment. Although this card may predict failure and its appearance is reason for concern, it also speaks of hope and is not to be wholly feared when it arises. Particularly when it shows here, it is a sign that you will rise high above your beginnings."

"This does not bode well. A black-robed figure, his face covered with an executioner's hood, stands atop a gallows. Perhaps you have had trouble with the law in the past? A criminal might be arrested, an unfaithful lover might be exposed, and so on. In some cases, the charges against a person are true and he receives a just punishment. However, this card can also speak of a lynch mob or false accusation. The basis of the crime or misstep is not indicated by the card, only the end result of conviction or apprehension."

"There is an object of great power in your background. This card may refer to a weapon or tool. But it always refers to a mystical item of potence and power. That object may come back... or it may not."

"The final three cards will foretell your future."

Yemam selects three cards: , ,

"The swashbuckler is familiar to all those who would step outside the law for the betterment of their fellows. Criminals who rob from the rich to give to the poor will find a friend in this card. It generally is taken to indicate someone who recognizes the importance of money, but is not drawn to it personally. He can handle it and feel no desire to own it for himself. You may have to risk the wrath of the law for the greater good."

"The hooded man represents those who are prone to evil acts through either stupidity or deception. It is the mark of all neutral evil warriors or those who are thrust into a situation where violence seems the only solution. It also symbolizes bigotry, intolerance, and xenophobia. In this role, it signifies those who lash out at the unknown stranger simply out of ignorance and fear that he may be a threat to them. Thus, it often indicates an outside presence or newcomer who must be dealt with. Beware of your own inclinations to exculde newcomers."

"The shepherd calls forth the devotion and dedication of friends and allies. It marks those who are loyal companions and devoted followers. Such people watch over those around them just as a shepherd watches over his flock. On the other side of the coin, this card is dark and dangerous as a force of evil. It marks the failing of a trusted friend, either accidentally or purposefully. It indicates that too much trust or responsibility has been placed on someone unworthy to bear such a burden."

"Together, these cards speak of a need to rally with friends and allies to fight the forces of evil that are ensconced in law and government."

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid looks at the cards and knows which one she is speaking...knowing that she knows too. Nodding he continues to draw from the deck

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Marius' Focus Marius' Recent Past

"The next card you choose represent the forces that stand against you at this time."

Marius selects a card:

"It seems that the forces of nature itself will hinder you in your immediate quest. Watch for beast and weather. They will seek your downfall."

"The next card represents the immediate future."

Marius chooses a card:

"This card speaks of a powerful and learned man who has turned his keen mind to the pursuit of evil. His great talents, which could go far in the service of mankind, have been channeled inward to serve only his own desire for power and knowledge. This card is, as you might imagine, linked to all manner of undead beings. While many amateurs assume that this card means death is in the future, this is seldom the case. It is far more common for this card to warn of a desire for power or an unnatural fascination or obsession. It indicates a greed for knowledge and power, but not always for wealth. Because those who master the undead often end up bearing such a curse themselves, it is also taken to indicate that someone might be sowing the seeds of his own destruction and that his own power may turn against him or prove to be his undoing."

"The next card you choose will show the forces that support you and your quest."

Marius chooses carefully:

"A powerful ally, a scholar or a wizard, will come to your aid. This card can show a temporary defeat but it should eventually be overcome. The lone wizard struggles along the narrow and broken bridge. If he can maintain his strength, he will reach sanctuary and refuge after weathering the storm."

"The next three cards will illuminate your distant past."

Marius chooses the cards: , ,

"The power of nature is strong in your past. There is no prejudice between good or evil, between law and chaos. The Druid is dispassionate and aloof. This encourages the base emotions, fears and desires. This can also reflect the impact and importance of the little things of the world. Pests, disease and vermin can have a huge impact on big things."

"The invoker is a card of choice. Choosing to go into dark places to find difficult knowledge and power. But the card has a real warning that this power and information can destroy... even he who bears it. Seek out knowledge, but beware it's corrosive effects."

"The paladin is, obviously, associated with paladins and other just and noble warriors. It is a friend to all who wield the sword and are lawful good in alignment. A proud and noble paladin who kneels with his sword held point down before him. This card is symbolic of all who pursue ultimate good through law and order. Unlike reckless, haphazard good, this good depends upon careful planning and strict adherence to codes of honor and fair play. In its most basic terms, it symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. A positive card, to be sure."

"The last three cards will show your final fate. Choose wisely."

Marius picks his fate: , ,

"The missionary is the patron of those who spread their teachings and faith to others. When taken for good, it indicates the spread of knowledge and wisdom, the attainment of enlightenment, and a better life for all mankind. As an evil omen, however, it warns of the spread of fear and ignorance, a time when dark forces will come to have sway over the land. The latter aspect is most commonly seen."

Marcella looks hard at Marius when he reveals the broken one, "This card tells of ultimate defeat. It is not generally a good omen. Particularly when it comes up in your final fate. There is a chance that it refers to some you may meet. Someone you may need to save.

Her voice does not sound like she believes that.

"The final card, the dictator calls to mind all that is wrong and evil in government or leadership. It is the mark of the despot and tyrant who rules with violence, fear, and intimidation. This also symbolizes the mad general who leads his armies into suicidal battles or orders them to stand against hopeless odds. This card tells of those who wield power unjustly or who have usurped the reigns of government from their rightful holder. It often indicates the influence of an evil army like the dreaded kargat of Darkon. Beware the power of the oppressor!"

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius listens to the words as each card is drawn, he focuses on his past and things to come. The Elementalist, watch for beast. Marius flashes a wicked smile as he thinks of Captain Timothy's head seperated from his body. The Necromancer, I knew there would be a battle of the arcane just not this soon, Marius thinks to himself.

The Enchanter, an ally. An ally is always good his thoughts form. The Druid. Marius mind takes him back to younger days with his father as he taught him about the land. He smiles.

The Invoker -- beware it's corrosive effects. I'll have to be careful as my blood grows in power, he thinks. The Paladin - a noble warrior. "Of course this must mean I am noble, I mean what else could it mean," Marius speaks softly and arrogantly.

The Missionary, dark forces sweeping the land, that can't be good and could mean many things Marius continues to think.

The Broken One, a need to save someone, but who? Marius' demeanor saddens as his mind reminds him of not being able to save his dad.

Marius continues and then comes the final card - the Dictator. Marius listens and then Marcella speaks the dreaded word, “kargat.”

Marius tries not to succumb to his fears, but the mere mention of that word makes all the shadows come alive. Marius’ mind turns completely against him. He stands up in a frightful panic, probably knocking over the table as he draws his sword, his attention completely focused on the shadows, “I told them nothing. Please I swear. I was only listening, I … I … I didn’t mean it. Please …” Marius’ face is completely pale, tears flow down his face as his eyes leap from shadow to shadow so quickly, that he can’t see past his own fright. Completely horrified he can’t even keep up a good defensive posture. Marius’ face says it all – he’s waiting for one of the shadows to leap out and kill him.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
As Yemam gets each reading, his mind races with ideas over what is what.

::Well...the Merchant...what did she just say? Something about a bad business transaction. Hmmm...what sort of business have I done recently Locke? RIGHT...the money from Maton!::

"This one worries me. I've had a business transaction recently and would hope it went well." Yemam picks the next card.

::As he concerns himself with the pouch Yemam's mind still races. The Bishop. Well...that mentioned those who plan, plot, and scheme. Maybe it has something to do with Matton again. He is a noble and they can never be good. But maybe it is Captain Timothy. We did ruin his dog fights. Or maybe it is someone else I have crossed? Oh this is not good news Locke.::

Yemam's face is losing color with each card drawn. "Too many in my past plot and scheme. I fear I may be in trouble with at least one shortly. Thank you for the warning." Yemam cards another card.

::That's right Locke...the Rogue. MATTON...it must be him. Who else besides the common noble hordes money like its life. I must investigate him further once we get back.::

Yemam smiles at the sight of the Rogue. "I believe I know the one who is represented by this. We will see what happens." Yemam draws the next card.

::The invoker? What can that mean? I must make sure I avoid this forbidden knowledge. Maybe I was never made to understand magic? Maybe that is what it means. Locke...any ideas about this one?::

"Forbidden knowledge? What knowledge could that be heh...heh." Yemam looks worried and slowly draws the next card.

::Okay...well the next card was the Beggar. Well this is the first bit of good news so far. A change in wealth will come to support our mission. Granted that we do not have any large amounts of money, I can only believe that this is good. Plus...beggars have been good to me in the past. A fine card Locke...a fine card.::

Yemam instantly smiles. "A Beggar. Always the ones who know what needs to be known. And it represent a change of status. I can only assume for the better." Yemam draws the next three cards hoping his luck continues.

::Well...maybe I can relax a little. Whats next? The enchanter. That was about initial failure and hardship in my past. Well...that must be my poor upbringing. Yeah...that must be it. The Hangman. Oh dear...that is cause for suspicion. Maybe it is just my past growing up...or maybe Tessa is in trouble. Locke...this worries me...I don't know. What's the next card? The Artifact huh? Wait...object of great power? What in the world can that be?::

Yemam speaks more to himself this time then to Marcella. "These are hitting close to home. I must wonder what this item of great power in my past is. Maybe the church..." Yemam cuts himself off and draws the final three cards.

::The Swashbuckler huh...maybe that's me. I have never really been one to hoard money, and going against the law isn't too bad as long as its a bad law. Okay...lets see...the Hooded Man can represent a newcomer or lashing out from an unknown stranger. Maybe that is just from us being out of town...or perhaps it is darker still and means I must watch for future backstabbers. Locke we are in trouble. The last card is of the Shepherd. Okay...well at least that can only represent a good group...like the one I am part of...LOCKE...I'm not going to think about the other side of the card.::

"Well...that cannot all be good. I mean I can see myself in the swashbuckler...but the hooded man? That one worries me. In any case, I hope the Shepherd is a good card and not one of evil."

Yemam stands up and bows to Marcella. "Thank you for the warnings and fortune telling. I hope that we can help you in the quest."

Yemam walks out of the wagon, visibly shaken and slightly pale. His appearance speaks volumes of the chaos going through his head.

Hassid's Focus Hassid's Recent Past

Marcella offers the deck to Hassid, "This card will represent a minor setback that is on the horizon."

Hassid selects a card:

"Hmm, it seems that you are currently caught in a web. Someone has schemed to put you in this place for their own ends. They care little for you but do care for what you will accomplish for them. Watch and free yourself at the earliest opportunity."

"The next cards reflects the immediate future."

Hassid choose a single card:

"The abjurer tells us that hardship and battle lie in your future. This card says nothing about whether you will succeed or not. Merely that much confusion and darkness lie before you. In particular, you face a serious supernatural threat. Avoid making assumptions. Do not trust the obvious. Particularly in light of the Bishop, this is a dangerous and life-threatening combination."

"This new card will show some minor aid that will give you an assist in this darkness you face."

Hassid picks his card and awaits the result:

Marcella is silent a moment. "I am sorry. This card cannot be an aide. It is the sign of complete and utter defeat. I don't know if you will be the one who suffers this defeat or if you will meet someone who has met that fate. But it is not pretty and it is not easy. May the powers of light be with you are you face this task."

"The next card shows your distant past. It may reveal something about the land you come from."

Hassid nervously choose the next card:

Marcella looks sharply at Hassid, "I see now why such a dark future awaits you. You were involved in harsh and brutal judgment, were you not? Whether you administered the pitiless strike of the stoic taskmaster or you suffered the cruel fate. Either way, not much positive energy has attached itself to you. And this darkness must be paid."

"This next card will reveal your ultimate foe... whether that be man or monster."

Hassid picks a card:

"Do not fret. This card brings to mind images of the foul rulers of Ravenloft's many domains. In truth, it is seldom that horrible. What it does indicate, however, is a single important individual. Often evil or tyrannical in nature, this master may have an army of minions at his disposal or may simply command the actions of a few thugs. His intentions might be of enormous consequence (the construction of a great shrine to the powers of evil, for instance) or they might be important to only a few (the slaying of a rival in love). However, it is ominous and foreboding. This individual is your foe... and a powerful... perhaps invincible one at that."

"The final card you select will answer your original question."

Hassid waits several seconds before tentatively choosing a card. It's as if the weight of the responsibility of choosing this card weighs heavily on his mind. He finally chooses and pulls a card. Marcella flips over the:

A smile spreads across the fortune tellers face. "This is the card of charity and unselfish giving. There are few cards in the tarokka that are so unambiguously positive. It is hard to read this card ina negative light. I do now know how it ultimate answers your question, other than to say yes. You will meet again. You may be destitute and at the end of your road when that happens, but fate has given you this one good thing to hold tight and look forward to."

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan ponders his reading.

"It seems you will face true and utter darkness in order to protect the innocent. Look for a powerful artifact to aid you in your fight. May the blessings of the Vistani go with you."

Blessings of the Vistani... the half of his heritage that abandoned him as a babe. Hmmm... there is probably truth to be found in the "mistaken about your past" bit, too.

True darkness, a powerful artifact, and protecting the innocent. Ioan always knew his lot was not to be a sunny, peaceful one. This reading is actually a bit more optimistic than Ioan expected...

Quote from: Unkabear
The Bishop: Very much was he…and his companions were caught in a web. But then was he in particular caught, and was this something that he would have to be weary of. If it was personal then he would be careful not to drag the others into it. The look on his face was most definitely one of recognition.

The Abjurer: “One of the Sword” Hassid says softly. One of the Sword, lives and dies by the Sword. Conflict and battle were something that he had resigned his fate too. To have a confirmation was remarkably comforting. When mentioned of a supernatural enemy a list began to form. It would seem that his adopted homeland would be one that filled his life with threats well beyond the average mortal to face. Hassid needed to remember, that he was as of yet still mortal.

The Broken One: Complete and utter defeat. It could not be said of the darkness, of this world and the one he came from the darkness was eternal. But perhaps, if this was to be his aid he could bend this to his benefit. And if lucky perhaps it would be their enemies defeat. But Hassid was not as hopeful of that due to Marcella’s reaction.

The Hangman: “My master fell by my sword. But it was not murder, it was a sacrifice, one that I am still learning from. His treachery to Izrador was discovered and in an attempt to seal me to the dark god I was forced to face a man in battle far my superior. He was to die in any case, so he chose in death to free me. And to his credit it worked, I am shamed to say that it was by his strength that I was able to break from the dark god and flee to this place. But my hands are far from clean, and I have accepted that my life must serve as a penance and perhaps will only fully be paid in my own death. I am not proud of my actions, but must accept that even though done under duress, were still done under my own will and power. The scales are not balanced in my favor I am afraid, but one grain at a time I change the balance of the scales.” The words from Hassid’s mouth were those of acceptance, they were not seeking absolution, for that may never come, they were not seeking pity, for he deserved none for his actions. It was simply speaking of truth and of past resolve.

The Darklord: Again acceptance and perhaps a great insight into the Bishop and Abjurer cards. It did not bode well for Hassid or his companions, but did continue to serve as a warning to remain vigilant. “I understand.”

The Philanthropist: Upon the drawing of this card and its explanation a single tear formed and crawled down his face as he picked up the card and committed the picture to memory. If for nothing else throughout the impending darkness there was a spot of light that he could set his bearings by. With this last card Hassid could face all else, and with his new friends at his side he would stand strong. He handed the card back to Marcella before wiping the remains of the tear from his face. “Thank you, though our path is destined in darkness, both by our previous task and that set upon us by you there is still light to cling to that will guide the way.”

Hassid stood and gathered his belongings, but before leaving turns to Marcella and says “May you always be led by the light of the Riding Host, and may they guard your way.” He then touched his hand to his forehead, his lips then out between the two before offering a slight bow and departing much to think about, but thanks to a workout earlier a clear head to dwell upon what was revealed.

As each of you come out of the bardo, it is with new information to think on. The camp is quiet. Many have retreated to their wagons. But a few wait for you. One is Raul.

"Come, friends. We have prepared a space for you. Share our camp this night. You will be safe here."

And indeed, the night is peaceful. The sounds of the camp never really die away. But it is comfortable and easy. The night passes uneventfully.

You rise refreshed and in the best mood you've been in for some time. The sun shine bright and you are certain you can take on anyone... or anything.

He looks to the sky. "Yes, Locke, I remember the fortune tellings. I'll be careful...trust me."

He takes his Rapier out and finds a tree to practice a few attack on. "Ah...I don't think I felt this good in a good while."

Yemam looks to his friends as they prepare to leave. "Well, friends. Let us use our fortunes to help the Vistani, help ourselves, and most importantly stop this evil. I knew that kid was trouble. I hope all of you had good fortunes."

Marius wakes in the morning, he's not sure how he got there, the last thing he remembers was -- the kargat. He can't get the seriousness out of his fragile mind. Marius finds some clean water and washes out his tear crusted eyes. He keeps his head down most of the morning as he looks over his equipment, "the bow must be tight, there will be no room for mistakes," he whipsers to himself. When he feels that all is in order he takes out his sword and practices focusing his mind on the motions when faced with multiple opponents.

After some breakfast Marius seeks out Ioan, "my friend, you are humble servant of the Sun Lord yes, I seek advice, or wish to confess, not sure which? As a humble servant of this retched realm I have done things, things my mind won't let me forget. My reading, true or false, carried me to a place I am all to familiar with. I was wondering if there was anything you, or I could do do keep that place at bay? You are my friends, something not all too common in the Realm of Dread and I don't want to be distracted when times are important."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
As a group, you set off to find the Cliff House. Initially, you walk through thick forested land. The bright sun occasionally penetrates the canopy of leaves and branches. But large swatches of the ground are covered in green shadow. The cart track you walk on is well used, with ruts that show signs of regular traffic.

All around, signs of forest life abound. Birds fly. Small furry animals, rabbit, chipmunks and squirrels, look curiously at you from a safe distance. Every so often, the road turns just the right direction and the trees are light enough that you can see the city of Karina, a few miles distant. Those views become more frequent as the road passes.

Suddenly, the forest ends. Rather abruptly, in fact. About a half mile further on, you see the northern city gates. To your left, the road re-enters the forest and begins to climb. You turn that way. As the road goes on, you follow the edge of the forest. Dark trees are to your left. Open fields, filled with grape vines are to your right. However, the grape vines rise on trellises that stand approximately eight feet high, making it difficult to see too far.

Every few hundred yards, give or take, a road turns to the right. More of a driveway to be specific. You can see many of the homes that these lead to. All are nice, comfortable homes. Some show signs of the former humility, farm houses turned into chalets. Some are new, grandiose in design and construction.

As you continue to walk, you see up ahead on your right, a vineyard gone to seed. It is obviously untended. It stands on the highest bluff. It is about this time you become aware of a... presence in the woods to your left. Someone is trailing you deep in the darkness. It is nothing specific, more of a gut feeling. An occasional shadow grabs your attention before it disappears. The animal life isn't as exposed as well. You each have your hand on your weapon.

Reaching the top of the hill, you see a drive turn off. It passes through a dilapidated archway of iron. An iron gate hangs, partially open. And you prepare to enter through it...

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid walks weary of the forests. Their day was not going to end happily, even if they succeed precious life would be lost. Hassid did what he could to keep his eyes to the forest, but his mind continued to wander to the foretelling. Great threats warned him of their future, but was it the immediate future? Or was it their eventual confrontation.

He kept his sword on his back, but his hand ached for it.

((Wow! Not good spot checks. All of you are taken by surprise as a quartet of werewolves who have been hiding in the woods launch a sneak attack.))

The first sign something is wrong is when they appear, close enough that they are upon you in seconds. Four snarling lycanthropes foaming at the mouth for your deaths. If you had time to look, you might recognize these beasts as those you saw at the dog fights. And one mammoth werewolf that you have faced in combat before... on the banks of the river.

The largest animal attacks Ioan, and latches his mighty jaws on the cleric's arm. Luckily, the armor saves the holy man from taking any damage.

Yemam and Hassid do not fare as well. A beast attacks each, raking them with vile claws. ((Yemam suffers 5 HP damage. Hassid suffers 6 HP damage.))

The werewolf that attacks Marius stumbles on a large stone, and it's flailing claw fails to even connect.

((Post your actions on the Combat Thread here.))

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The beast attacking Yemam tries to press its advantage. A flurry of claws fails to find the scout, but the animal gets its jaws on Yemam again. (Yemam takes 5 HP damage. Also, make a FORT save.)

Yemam's blade easily pierces the hide of the werewolf, who howls with pain as the silvered weapon enters its body. As he quickly scans the area, he can see no additional beasts. Whether there were no natural wolves for Nathan to call or whether they are waiting in the wings will just have to be addressed later.

The lupine attacking Hassad shrieks with fury as it attacks with every weapon at its disposal. One claws misses wildly while on claw hits. The beasts teeth find the edge of Hassad's shield and do no damage. (Hassid takes 5 HP damage.)

While it's hard to tell, it appears that Nathan has grown even more furious as he presses hard on the cleric. His first claw catches Ioan in a particularly vulnerable spot, ripping his side. But while the slavering jaws continue to snap at Ioan's throat, they also continue to miss. (Ioan suffers 18 HP damage from critical hit.)

Marius also has to fend off a lupine attacker. Claws and jaws both hit and dig into flesh with a frightening ferocity. (Marius suffers 10 HP damage. Also, make a FORT save.)

Quickly falling into a battle trance, Hassid begins to move with the Shurapoli bringing his Falchion to bare and striking at the werewolf before him. He hits with a solid blow and the werewolf screams its pain to the sky.

Ioan withdraws behind Yemam, and invokes Prayer on the party. (Everyone's attack rolls, damage rolls, and fear saves are now at +1. The enemy is at -1 on the same (barring spell resistance).) A magical peace enters each of your hearts.

Startled for a mere second Marius takes a 5-ft step back (K14) and allows the magic within his blood to shield him [mage armor (new AC 16)]. He stadies his arm on the bow and silver arrow in hand, "Knew you would come sons of filth, prepare to taste revenge."

((No need for a new map this time, probably next. Your situation looks tough, but I think you've already turned the corner to coming back!))

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Yemam's foe responds to the damage inflicted upon it by trying again to rend him limb from limb. One claw misses, as do the jaws. But one claw rakes lightly over his face. (Yemam suffers 3 HP damage.)

Yemam yells out in pain from the scrtch he just suffered. "You wolf-lover. I'll get you yet." Yemam once again punching his rapier deep into the werewolf in front of him.

The other werewolf tries to kill Hassid. However, it fails to pierce his defenses and even hurt the warrior.

Nathan Timothy snarls as he follows up Ioan. He is frothing from the mouth as his claws and teeth rend the air. But my the mysteries of god, Ioan emerges unhurt, though his clothing is rent in a few spots. ((Dude, you are lukcy! Nathan has awesome attacks and rolled for nothing.))

The final wolf pursues Marius. But the Mage Armor helps out and the beast's natural weapons are deflected by the arcane energy. A single glancing claw does slice Marius across the forearm. (Marius suffers 3 HP damage.)

Hassid did not appreciate the pressed attack, but the loud howl brought a bit of emotion into his heart. This disturbed him as he should be well into a battle dance. Perhaps it was something else that lifted him and strengthened his arm. Hassid went in for the kill. The beast spins with the force of the blow and falls in a crumpled heap on the grass to the side of the road.

Ioan grunts and blinks away the sudden sweat and tears in his eyes. He could step back again, and cast another spell, but then Nathan would have Yemam flanked... When all you have is a hammer, the wolf's head looks a lot like a nail... The blow lands solidly in Nathan ribs, but the only result is a chuckle from the Werewolf Lord.

Marius cringes from the pain of torn flesh, he bites down in pain and moves away from his attacker hopping for better position. With a warmth filling his heart he draws his bow and fires at his attacker, "Mess with elven blood will you. Eat silver you overgrown hairball."

The arrows sinks deep into the wolf, as a shocked expression crosses its bestial face.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
((Man! InvisibleCastle.com is finally back and I can do this post.))

The werewolf attacking Yemam continue to press its ferocious attack. While it does not bite him, one claw rips into his flesh. (Yemam suffers 6 HP of damage.)

Yemam starts to feel the blood on his face, and voices from all around. ::Listen to Ioan you fool...get out of there!:: Yemam looks around and notices an unprotected flank of Nathan's.

Yemam withdraw around the werewolf he faces, trying to get behind Nathan. The beast flails its arm, trying to stop Yeman, but he ducks under the blow ans slips by unharmed. He still glances quickly to see if anyone is sneaking up on the fight. ((75' is further than you can go in a round with running. Running provokes an AoO. Also, there is no clear path through that wouldn't provoke an AoO. So I plotted a path that suffered the least number of AoO and still got you to the square you wanted.))

Nathan continues his attack on Ioan. To a degree, Ioan's luck holds. But one claw does connect... hard! (Ioan suffers 9 HP damage.)

The werewolf on the southern end of the fight now faces two foes. But his focused animal mind won't let up of the prey he has been attacking. However, he fails to hurt Marius in any way,

Hassid doesn't even watch the Werewolf fall to the ground before he dances toward the wolf facing Marius so that he can open him up to support Ioan and Yemam. With a single step, Hassid brings his sword in at chest level as if he were a spinning top and cut the beast down.

Ioan is amazed at his good fortune, but is still feeling a hole in his side... should luck not hold out, he'll be in real trouble. Ioan steps back a little more than a pace, and invokes Sanctuary upon himself. This leaves both werewolves currently disengaged and between Ioan, Marius and Hassid on the south with Yemam at their rear in the north.

"Surprised furball. My arrows and your kind have met before, the result is always the same," Marius chuckles at the werewolf. As Marius goes to take a step backward, two things happen. First, Marius bumps into Ioan and can go back no further. Which causes a moment of panic... until Hassid shows up and drops the beast with one massive swing.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
With Yemam withdrawn, the werewolf who had been attacking him has a choice to make. Ioan is certainly the closest target. But Hassid has revealed himself to be the most threatening target. The beast bounds over and takes a swing. However, it does not connect.

Yemam looks to Nathan's position and sees Ioan bleeding badly. "I'll help you friend." As he steps forward to launch an attack, he stubs his toe badly on a rock in front of him and ends up behind Nathan in pain.

Nathan steps forward, ready to finish what he had started. But the divine energies prevent him from striking and a strange look of confusion crosses his face.

Hassid chooses to ignore the beast in front of him to focus on the werewolf lord. With an impressive display of tumbling, he moves past the beast and comes to the aid of Ioan. He is not able to get quite far enough to flank the monster, but he is close enough to demonstrate his skill with the blade. Nathan howls in pain and surprise.

Ioan invokes Cure Light Wounds upon himself.

Bumping into Ioan completely confounds Marius’ mind, "stupid hairball got something in my eye." He stands there and fires his bow forgetting to even draw an arrow, either that or he shoots himself in the foot, he’s not sure at this point. "I hate werewolves. I really hate werewolves. Hey dad, please stop helping me!"

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The lesser werewolf turned on his heel as Hassid tumbled past. And the first thing he saw was Marius fumbling with his weapon. Taking a quick step, he throws all he has at Marius, but none of his fearsome claws or teeth strike home, though one claw does spark off the mystical energies of his mage shield.

Yemam draws up the courage to take down the Giant Nathan. "Not this time, you prehistoric canine." He moves up behind Nathan and thrusts his rapier toward exposed flesh. But his blade does not strike true and misses the lord.

Nathan's attention is well and truly drawn to Hassad after the brutally effeciant attack. He spins as his claws hit armor. But his teeth grab in Hassad's arm. (Hassad suffers 9 HP damage.)

Hassid presses his attack on the Werewolf lord as he continues to threaten his friends. The blade finds that spot and slips through the ribs of the werewolf lord and pierces the heart of the sailor and captain. A single howl escapes Nathan's lips as he sinks to his knees, already shifting back to the form you are more familiar with.

Ioan hollers at the man as he sinks, lifeless to the road. The divine magics heal the rents and tears that Nathan had inflicted.

Marius will take a 5-ft step away from the beast, "not so tough when faced with the likes of me now are you furball," Marius boasts. His arrow catches the lupine with its head down and strikes it through the ear. The monster falls before it can even utter a sound.

And a strange quiet fell over the scene. Those familiar with combat recognize it. The huffing and puffing of those fatigued and injured covers the sounds of nature.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan stoops and picks up his warhammer. He shakes his head sadly, and prods the fallen sailor/werewolf with a boot.

He looks up at his panting comrades, and realizes his own breath is still coming in gasps, blood flecking amid the spittle.

"Nice work. Y'all are amazing."

He horks up a lungful of phlegm and blood and spits to the side of the path.

"I'm next to useless, though. And half-dead at that. Still, if any of you need to be healed (and it looks like you all do) I can lay hands on you."

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid felt the lifeblood begin to flow and Nathan begin to change as he spun around to face the final opponent, just in time to see an arrow enter his ear. Most would not live after such a blow. Yet still Hassid waited for the beast to fall before coming from his trance. His fluid motions eased, the edges of who he was again became rough. While fighting Hassid was his true self. There was no good or evil while fighting, there need not be lethality, nor even an opponent.

Falling back into himself was a step backward, becoming the man conflicted between his past and his future, who he was and who he desired to be. In the end he decided to clean his blade.

He knelt down and with what rags of clothing Nathan began to clean his blade, and rummage through whatever he was carrying to see if the creature/man had anything of value.

He then noticed the bite that Nathan had given him, and nodded to Ioan, "I could use something to close these wounds until you can properly attend to them."

Marius walks over to Nathan's dead corpse of a body and draws his sword. With one quick slice he removes his head from the rest of his body and smiles. "I told you that it would be in the best interest of you and your friends if we never crossed paths again," Marius speaks with content in his voice and spits on the body.

Semi-disappointed he pats Hassid on the back, "I really wanted the kill my friend, but with such impressive swordsmanship how can anyone deny your kill."

Slightly confused how the beast was able to remove his protective armor, Marius searched him mind for answers.

Finally he walks over to Ioan, "my friend and help in dressing or closing my wounds from these beasts would most graciously be welcome. Also there is the slight problem with some of us being ahh, bitten by these beasts. Know anything out side of belladonna that might help?” (ooc: 13/26 hp)

Following any healing from Iaon, Marius scowers the battle site for any arrows he might be able to retrieve.

(ooc: I'm not sure what you want me to roll to see if any of the 3 arrows I firied are still usuable.)

"That was some impressive swordsmanship friend." Yemam looks into the sky. "Aye...Locke also agrees."

Yemam then moves to Ioan. "I know you are down on strength friend, but anything you can do to heal these wounds would be nice."

"This is not good. VERY not good. Belladonna, administered now, would give you a chance, but not a good one. A much wiser, more experienced holy man than I could simply Heal you, but I know none within reach."

He thinks...

"We will have to watch the moon, and chain you carefully during the nights it is full. I believe I may be able to remove the curse then, but your will is as important as my invocation. It is no guarantee."

Yemam looks at his wounds after Ioan works his magic. "Thank you...it feels much better. I will hold, but I doubt I can take as much abuse as I did this time around (OOC: 25/37). Also, the news of this curse is not good to hear."

Ioan sighs heavily... "Through the gate, then?"

"But friend, didn't you say that you were low on strength. We should go forward only if everyone can have a good chance of leaving alive."

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"Hmmmph. Yeah, another fight like this one would kill me. A night's rest, and some prayer time would be nice. C'n we afford that, though?"

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The Cliff House awaits. You can see it standing. Decrepit. A barn stands nearby. An old, gone to seed, vineyard stands between you and the home. As you finish recovering from the fight, each of strain your resources... looking for some sign of any potential foes. You each see and hear... nothing unusual. Crows fly above and drop to the field to peck for food among the plants. The only thing out of place is a nice, even opulent carriage, parked out in from of the home. There are no horses hitched to the carriage. But this vehicle is new and well tended. And does not seem to fit with the rest of the scene.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid looks to the others. "One night here would be another wasted. I do not wish to sound proud, but there is no safe place to rest, and we did give our promise to the vistani that we would look into this. If another fight ensues we should take flanks on our friend and dispatch our foes. Our trouble this time was that we were too spread out and not watchful of our opponents. We will not again be caught unprepared." Hassid then looked to the carriage and about for a place for the horses to be stabled.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan straightens himself, spits again (noting that his spittle lacks the worrisome tinge of blood, and is back to its usual greenish-grey) and says "Onward then. Sorry f'r the lapse."

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
"hmm ..." Marius sighs, "chained up, how ... well, how necessary. Thanks for the heal my friend, onward then I suppose ..."

Marius takes a quick look around, but the entire world disappears before his eyes. He follows the foot steps of what he hopes is the the group.

Quote from: Unkabear
As they move toward the manor Hassid does what he can to take point and keep the group close together so if another incident occurred they would not be spread thin as they were against the Werewolves.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
As the group gets closer to the Cliff House, another building comes into view. One that likely explains the lack of horses for the carriage. A stables stands, with door firmly barred shut. Whether it is to keep something in or something out is unknown. The whole area is covered with small animals... birds and squirrels and such scamper around the vineyard. The good news is the vines are an excellent cover (should the party choose to approach cautiously).

(Go ahead and let me know the general attitude you want to take in approaching the Cliff House. Maybe a plan of attack when you are in the house. Feel free to talk this out amongst yourselves.)

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid takes to the high grasses early in an attempt at stealth, and though it would not be the best attempt, it was more than nothing. Now as before he kept the group together as they approached the house. He could only assume that the heavy door on the stable was to keep Nathan's like out.

ooc once inside Hassid will do a slow room by room if the place is empty. If it is occupied then he will do what he can to avoid people, if there is only one person there to care for the mistress then Hassid will do what he can to trap the person and ask a few questions.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The group moves quickly... if not completely quietly... towards the house. About sixty feet from the front door, two things happen nearly simultaneously.

First, a flock of large black crows that had been perched on a pair of trees take to the sky, screaming their dark cries. However, the birds do not attack or do anything at all, just fly in circles overhead.

Secondly, two arrows whistle through the air. They both miss any member of the group. Those with sharp eyes notice that the two front windows have been broken out at some point in the past. And while you don't get a clear view... those are the most likely hiding place of the archers. Confirming it, the flight of the arrows came from the front of the house.

The group goes even lower, using the vines as cover. But while the vineyard does provide respite from prying eyes, it will not stop an arrow. If the archers decide to fire indiscriminately... sooner or later they hit someone.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid looks to the others worried about being peppered by arrows as they will eventually find their target and gravly says "Cover me" before attracting the attention of the archers by charging them.

Hassid charges the window and jumps through into the building.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"I'm useless in this kind of fight," Ioan growls. "I suppose I could throw rocks, but that's it."

He crouches amid the best cover he can find, and gets his shield up in front of him.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
(Once your PC enters the house, I'll need an Initiative roll.)

With a cry, Hassad dashed directly at the house. He seems to have caught the archers off guard with the directness of his frontal assault. Because while both windows sprout an arrow, neither of them is anywhere close to the warrior. Hassad executes a perfect ump, crashing through the thin wooden frames that used to hold glass panes. He lands, his blade at the ready. (Sorry, too much for one round to get the attack as well.)

Hassad finds himself in a wide entrance way... maybe 50' by 30'. Two men wielding bows stand at the windows on either side of the large double doors - which are barred on the inside.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Yemam and Marius both advance slowly, bows notched, waiting for a clear shot through the windows. With a sudden flick, they see movement in the second window... (not the window Hassad crashed through). Both fire almost at the some time... perhaps Marius gets his arrow off sooner. Both fly at the target. One unfortunately is deflected by the remains of the glass pains and their frames. The other hits someone who yells in pain.

Hassad adjusts to the interior. The room is a bit dark but it is hard to miss the warrior standing in front of him. His bow has not yet hit the floor as his hand scrabbles at his belt, trying to draw his short sword. He's not quick enough and with an efficient swipe, Hassad ensures he will never get the blade free.

The other archer, now with an arrow protruding from his shoulder, does get his blade out of its scabbard in time to have Ioan come hurtling through the window. Unfortunately for the cleric, he catches his foot on the sill and spills into the room rather than flying gracefully like Hassad did. Fortunately, spilling into the room lands him on the foe, who was turning to deal with Hassad. Both Ioan and the archer hit the wooden floor in a sprawl.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Marius and Yemam move almost in unison. Reaching the front porch, Marius pauses to cast his arcane spell. Yemam gets his bow through the window and hollers at the man.

Ioan can see, from his position, that something is wrong with the man. He obviously can see the group. He shot at you, after all. But his gaze is vacant... his eyes unfocused. All this is noticed in the moments before Hassad's blade collects the second half of the pair and ends his life.

The group has a moment of heavy breathing. No other attackers are storming into replace these two. You have a moment to look around and catch your breath.

This is... or was.. a nice room. A spacious entrance way, approximately 50' x 30' with a high vaulted ceiling. In the far wall, opposite the still bared down, there are two open doorways. There is also a wide stairway that leads up to the second floor. The room shows multiple signs of neglect and age. The carpets are dark and stained. What furniture there is was nice one hundred years ago. Torn, ratty tapestries hang from the short walls on either side of the room.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid leans over Ioan and helps him back to his feet then unbars the door and opens it.

Walking away from the open door Hassid makes his way over to the first man that he dropped and began to clean his blade. Then he did a cursory search to find out anything about them. Beyond the bows and short swords who were they and why were they guarding a dilapidated house?

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam walks through the door. "Thanks Hassid. Its much easier than jumping through a window."

"Right, so what now?"

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius yells out to Yemam, "Damn I'm good," then follows Yemam through the door, "thank you my friend," looking towards Hassid, "Are we all ok?"

Marius takes a look around and walks over to the archers plucks a couple of arrows from their quivers to fill his.
(ooc: I'm assuming that the archers had some arrows)

"So my friends, what now?" he speaks confidentially.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
There are indeed arrows that Marius can plunder.

As Hassad investigates the guards, he notices some odd things. There clothes are filthy. The two men are filthy. As if they had not cleaned themselves in weeks or months. They are thin, almost dangerously so. The clothes they wear are livery of some sort or another. The kind of thing you see on servant of a rich and powerful household. Almost private uniform-type stuff.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"Well... we were none too quiet on our way in. If there's somebody in the house besides these two, they know we're here."

Ioan thinks for a moment.

"If I were one o' them arcane types, I'd be wrappin' myself in spells right now. Some o' them spells wear off after just a few minutes, though. We could rush upstairs, or down, an' hope we catch him before he's all comfy, or we c'n take our time and search, an' hope that by the time we find the spider at the middle o' this web, it's on the trailin' edge of its magiks."

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid nudges one of the corpses with his foot. "I am not sure that they were really alive. Not dead, at least not in body. But they acted as if they had no mind."

Hassid Furrowed his brow. "If we search this floor and there are more of them then we will have to fight the whole way, and though they are outmatched they will fight to the end anyway." Hassid shook his head as he tested the weight of his perfectly balanced blade. "There is no honor in their deaths. Let us find the mistress of the house. There in we may find our answers. I suggest up the stairs." He says pointing to the staircase with his sword awaiting consensus before taking point.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
"Well we've gotten this far, lets hope our luck holds true," Marius says quietly but confiedently.

"I agree with Ioan, lets just hope they are not smart enough to wrap themselves with protective spells from flying projectiles - my projectiles. I mean one would have to be crazy to fire in close quarters, crazy or briliant as in my case," Marius flashes a grin.

Marius knocks an arrow, "ready when you are."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
With quick and quiet efficiency (please make Move Silent rolls every post while we're in the Cliff House - unless you aren't trying to Move Silent) the group goes up the wide stairs. Upon reaching the top, you can look down into the open entrance way. Directly in front of you is an open door. Through that door, there is an empty room. There are two wooden chairs sitting against the wall to the right. But other than that, there is nothing. The room does seem to be clear of the general debris that litters the main entrance way. To your right is a door frame that is missing the door entirely. Through it you can see a door on the other side of a hallway that leads away to the right.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius looks at Hassid, "well we all knew this morning that blood would flow. I've got you back my friend." He looks at the rest of his friends, "all of you backs," Marius sighs and shakes his head. That was awkward he thinks to himself.

Marius proceeds upstairs, cautiously, following the group from the back providing cover fire.

Move Silent=22 (natural 20)

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid nods to Marius and the others and begins to creep up the stairs. He did not want to fight, fighting would be nothing more than a slaughter if the two at the door represented the rest, and Hassid was trying to move away from slaughters.

He knew that Ioan would be unsuccesful in his stealth, but that was alright, the man had proven himself a friend, and that was enough that Hassid would defend his brave friend.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan nods in agreement, and proceeds up the stairs with the rest, moving as quietly as his armor will allow.

Move Silently - Stairs (1d20-6=1)

It's not especially quiet.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam nods in agreement with the group and follows them up the stairs as quietly as possible. He has his bow out and arrow in hand, ready to fire at the first sign of danger.

As the group travel up the stairs, Yemam takes an active glace around to see if there is anything out of the ordinary.

Move Silently = 29

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The house is eerily quiet. You arrive at the top of the stairs and see the open room in front of you. A long hallway extends to your right. Several doors open on the left side of the hallway. No doors are on the right side, but then, those doors would open out into the large space of the open entrance way.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid begins down the hallway slowly peaking into each room one by one to make sure that there is no threat before moving on.

Move Silent 18

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan stands still at the top of the stairs. Might as well let the quiet types do the sneaking...

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam follows Hassid down the hallway, still holding his bow and arrow ready to back him up.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius follows, providing cover fire ...

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Moving through the upper floor, you mainly find empty room after empty room. There isn't much trash or waste in any of these rooms. In a few room, lots of furniture has been piled up, as if it is being stored.

However, at the end of the hall, you find two well-appointed bedrooms. The furniture is solid and luxurious. Nice plush rugs lie on the floor. It is a complete shock to find these two rooms in this house of decay. No one is in either of these rooms.

There is no one there. The rooms are empty but lavishly furnished. One of the rooms appears to be that of a young boy. All the clothes are fashionable... if a bit out of date. And all are black. There are a few toys, but they lie in the corners, dust beginning to gather on them. There is nothing of value in the room.

The other room obviously belongs to a woman. And is much more richly appointed. A large, ornamental four poster bed dominates the room. A wardrobe is full of fine dresses, all hanging from there hooks. A large mirror overlooks a makeup table, covered with a variety of beauty products.

Next to the bed, sits a locked chest.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu

Marius concentrates on what he's doing and with a smile adds, "you know my friend, when this is over, you, me, and Locke have to get that drink."

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
"Yes...a drink would be great."

"Oh...and the thing you said before about my skills when we got to this chest. Don't worry...I do what I do, but its for the good and not for evil. I may be sneaky and a crook at times...but I assure you its not against the forces of good."

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan smiles as he listens to his friends' banter.

"Lemme know when you're ready for me to point the way, and I'll try detecting Evil. I mean, as soon as you've found whatever there is to find in the box."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
None of your searches turn up any traps. And with a practiced turn of the wrist, Yemam pops the lock and the chest top lifts up a fraction of an inch. Grabbing a hold of either side, he raises it to reveal the contents.

Inside, there is a pouch filled with jewelry, (5 pieces worth a pretty penny each), a book filled with strange writing, and a handmade wooden box. Inside the box, you see a set of tarokka card, wrapped in velvet.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius looks towards Ioan, "Now might be a good time. If you wish to preserve some of your divine might, I can accomodate, but I can only scan for magic."

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid was not sure how much of any of that was usable. There were skills that he wished that he had. Greater stealth, the ability to wield lock picks with ease. But instead he learned the way of the blade. And there were many of those that fell by it that were innocent.

He bowed his head and said a prayer to the Riding Host for those that fell before thier time. This world was much as the one that he came from, but thank the host that there was more than one fallen god to draw strength from.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius summons the power of his blood and lets his eyes focus into the proper spectrum (Detect Magic) then looks at the objects recovered from the chest.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam steps back and lets Marius do what he is good at now. "Your turn friend."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The tarokka deck glows with a very faint divination aura. But you're not sure it is something you can use without training... or blood... or both.

The book fairly screams spell book. It will take time to decipher the arcane language and determine exactly what spells are in it.

The jewelry is just bling.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"Marius... look around. WANDER. If it works for you like it works for me, you c'n see auras throughout the house, as long as there ain't metal, or too many walls between you an' whatever's glowing."

He turns to Yemam and Hassid. "I'll do the same, lookin' for Evil, as soon as Marius runs outta steam."

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam nods in agreement with Ioan. "First, just look at this stuff so we can make sure its safe to take. We should probably return the cards to the Vistani though."

Yemam looks to Hassid. "We can't let them wander alone."

Yemam follows Marius and Ioan, hoping they don't split up.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius joins Ioan looks around and wonders. He sticks close to everyone so as not to get ambushed. "Hassid, if you could provide some back up I would appreciate it."

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid nodded "I will not allow the evils of this house to befall my friends." He said as he closed with the group. Hassid was still having trouble valuing gems and gold as things of worth. In Sharuun coin was used because people were forced to do so by the point of a sword, but all real transactions were more practical in nature. Things only have value if others share the value of it.

Hassid did what he could to remain at Marius & Ioan's side, not knowing where their visions might take them he did not want to get ahead and have them disappear from his sight.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan steps next to Marius and invokes Detect Evil.

"If we don't see any auras, then we need to move quickly through the house until we DO. An' then we need to let everybody know what we're seeing."

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius listens to the wisdom in Ioan's words, "agreed."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Marius does not have long, a minute or so, to wander about, casting the arcane eye upon the upper floor. Nothing else appears magical about this place or anything in it.

Once he is complete, Ioan calls upon his divine magics to uncover any hidden evil. Unfortunately, the entire place gives off a low level aura reflecting that this place has long held evil within it and it has absorbed some of that taint. The spell book belongs to a caster who is undoubtedly evil. But it is not, in itself, dangerous. Likewise, the tarokka deck has absorbed some of that dark kharma from its owner.

Ioan has more time to wander and is fully able to explore the entire second floor, finding nothing. Wandering down to the main floor, he catches something difficult to pin down. A flicker on the edge of his range or darkness and pain. What is most odd is that when he moves to try and get a better look (additional rounds to uncover more information), it moves out of range.

Once down to the main floor, Ioan is shocked by the utter pulses for the evil aura coming from beneath. There is a basement somewhere. And something Evil is down there.

((I need a Listen check from all the party.))

((Detect Magic is a 1 min / level spell and Marius has a caster level of 1. Detect Evil is a 10 min / level spell and Ioan has a higher caster level to boot. However, in both cases you must concentrate to maintain the spell so I am ruling you cannot move at your full speed (or even close to it) and still keep the spell working.))

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
The magic ends, "damn it." Marius looks toward Iaon, "My friend you have more experience in the ways of magic than I, I'm still learning. If you think it wise, I can summon the magic one more time and continue through the rest of the house?"

Marius continues to focus on his surroundings.

(ooc: if Ioan think's it's a good idea, I will cast Detect Magic once again and continue through the the other floor)

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid follows them around and becomes more aprehensive as they descend the stairs again. And to find that they would have to descend again into the basement. But first Hassid would have to clear this floor. But with all the trompsing around upstairs Hassid assumed that all of the occupants of the house knew of their arrival.

Listen = 14
Random = 14

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
As Marius waited for Ioan's wisdom he looked over the room and believed he noticed Hassid's apprehension. He gave a comforting pat on Hassid's shoulder, "easy my friend, this place is not a whole lot of fun, be we'll make it. I know that because, well I've seen your skill with that blade, and well ... I'm me," he smiled as he boasted.

Marius turned to Yemam, "just the same, perc up those ears my friend, and tell Locke that it wouldn't hurt him to pay attention as well."

Sense Motive=14

Quote from: Unkabear
"I have no shortage of faith in my blade. What I am apprehensive about is the unknown. And yours and the others safety that concerns me, and not for lack of ability. A friend...anyone that I can trust is still new to me, and I have no desire to lose such a valuable thing without a fight."

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam follows the group cautiously, becoming nervous of the impending evil that Ioan describes. His ears are at a constant level of alert.

Listen = 15

Looking up into the sky "Hmm...too many nerves...Locke can you hear anything?"

Listen = 29 (natural 20)

Looking at Marius. "Well, I can't hear a thing out of the ordinary, but Locke might."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Yemam can catch just a hint of noise, coming from the back of the house. Whomever... or whatever... is causing it is quiet. Almost perfectly quiet. You hear no other noise on the entire main floor.

Moving down onto the main floor, the group begins to repeat the same process they used on the second floor. They move from room to room, weapons drawn and ready, on constant alert for a threat. They find none on the main floor. Most of the rooms are complete rubbish. Animal droppings fill some of the outlying rooms. Broken furniture fills the corners. Rugs are torn and stained. All in all, the main floor is in worse shape than upstairs. With one notable exception.

The kitchen is relatively clean. It is not well stocked, but the basic are there. No one could live off the food in this house for more than a day or two if it was their only source. But as a way station, it would provide a quick bite. The food is being kept in stout boxes to keep animals out.

Swinging open th door that leads to the pantry, the party uncovers a terrible site. Bodies... human bodies... have been piled up in a corner. Both male and female, they all seem to dressed in the same livery as the two guards you fought in the entranceway. Some have been dead for only days. Others have been dead for weeks or more.

Any attempt to move towards the faint sound occasionally heard turn up empty. The main problem seems to be that all the windows on the main floor, with the exception of the two windows in the kitchen, are broken out. Whatever is causing the noise has easy egress from the building when it hears anyone investigating it. It is a bit unnerving. But whatever it is also shows no signs of trying to trap the group or get any closer.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius looks at Yemam, "strange that you heard something and I didn't?"
Marius collects this thoughts and checks his bow then his sword, "anyone else getting the feeling that we're being watched?"

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid waved them away. "It could be anything, a cat or a fox slipping in and out. Best not to corner such an animal. If the evil of this house has infected it, they would fight to the death and as faultily as the others. I have no desire to kill such an animal but to put it out of its misery." Hassid walked over to the door "Let us find our way beneath this floor and onto what is infecting this land."

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius nods in agreement.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Hassad opens the door to the basement and finds a stairway curving down and to the right. You must go down about four or five steps and then duck to look back into the room. You see a smallish room with a low ceiling. A door leads out to hallway. You can hear shuffling sounds down the hall but cannot see anything directly.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid descends the stairs his blade at the ready and slows down at the bottom to allow for his eyes to adjust to the light, and after ducking into the room moves well enough in to allow for the others to enter, but still keep himself between them and potential harm down the hall.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
"Well I suppose there is no way around this," Marius says. "Now which way where we going?"

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam follows the group down into the basement, hoping the child in not the one who he heard.

Initiative = 19

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius sees the speed at which Yemam gets ready, "wow my friend, such haste, I must have gotten lost in thought while attempting to get ready."

(ooc: my init should be 5 instead of 4. My init is +2 not +1 the way I rolled it. Not much of an improvement, but I'll take it.)

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The only door leading out of the stairwell opens into a long narrow hallway. To the left, there is a few feet of potential storage space. To the right, the hallway stretches about 50 feet. The hall is only maybe five feet wide. And the ceiling is only seven or eight feet high.

Facing down the hallway, there are two doors that open to the left side, approximately evenly spaced. On the right side, there is a single door, directly across the second door on the left. The most important door, however, is at the far end of the hallway behind the four guards. The men are rushing towards you. They are dressed in the same livery as the archers from upstairs.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Yemam sees the guards rush towards the party and notices the cramped conditions. "Hey guys...we're not here to fight...I mean...Look over there!"

The four seem... focused in a really unnatural way. None fall for Yemam's attempt to distract them. They crash into the crew. But their blades miss all of the party... although Ioan is saved only due to his armor.

Hassad, for one, is prepared for the onslaught. As soon as he can, he attempts to skewer one of the guards. Unfortunately, his blade becomes entangled and he misses the guard.

Marius takes a step backwards, trying to get a shot off. A less skilled bowman might have had trouble effectively using a bow in the conditions, but Marius' arrow is on target, piercing the leader of the attackers.

((Marius, you've been in the house about a half hour.))

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Yemam figures firing in these close quarters is not too keen of an idea. He instead focuses his energy on helping Marius find a kink in the enemy's defense. Unfortunately, his shouted advice is less helpful than he thought.

Of the four guards, only two can get into a position to actually swing their swords. All four fight silently and dispassionately. Almost robotic. However, the fight competently, if uninspired. The first guard misses Hassad with his blow. Perhaps the arrow still sticking out of his upper chest hampers his movement. But the other guard does get a blow to the thigh of Ioan. [Ioan suffers -4 HP.]

Marius keeps his distance and lets another arrow fly, "get away from my friends you ... you ... what are you exactly?" The arrow hits the same soldier and he falls... without crying out. None of the other guards answer you.

Hassad swings hard and cuts one of the guards down is a single swing of the blade, catching the man across the throat and nearly decapitating the guard (nice damage roll!).

Ioan braces himself, and swings his warhammer at the nearest guard... who is fallen as a result of the arrows in his chest. The hammer clangs off the chain shirt of the guard and provides insult to lethal injury. (15 just missed and this seemed like the most dramatic result.)

((Just checking in. I have Hassad currently suffering with 6 HP damage. Ioan currently suffering with 13 HP damage. Marius currently suffering with 21 HP damage (and only 5 HP left). Yemam currently suffers with 15 HP damage. If you think this is incorrect, drop me a PM and let me know.))

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Yemem stands behind Ioan, calling out advice and guidance.

The two guards who can get into the fray swing their swords. But they miss both Ioan and Hassad.

Marius fails to follow up on his last hit (even with the +2 from aid another) as the arrow glances of the leather shoulder armor.

Hassad takes full advantage and with a well-aimed thrust, pierces the armor and eventually the heart of one of the guards, who sinks to the ground. But the other soldier moves in to take his place.

Fighting these men is disconcerting as they show no emotion or pain.

Ioan calls upon his magic and easily heals Marius to full health. He also displays a great deal of concentration, avoiding the swing from the guard while casting the magic.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassad continues to cut up the guards. It doesn't take much longer. The remaining two guards go down. And it leaves a tickle in the mind of the group. What kind of intruders were these pathetic excuses of soldiers intended to keep out?

With the end of the fight, the group is left to face the same layout. A long hallway, two doorways on the left side of the hall, one door on the right side of the hall.

((Handwave the final round to speed things up.))

Hassid took no pleasure in the slaughter of these men. They were less than animals, and not even good for meat.

Hassid only cleaned his blade on thier clothing, not bothering to search the bodies knowing already what he would not find.

He then looks down the hallway and then to the others. "Shall we proceed?" he asks before taking the lead again.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"Keep goin', friend. Nothin' to see here. I s'pect these were already dead long b'fore we came along."

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
"As we were then my friends," Marius smiles proudly. He looks around for anything he can take before proceeding.

(ooc: if they have any arrows I take a few. If not I can you roll to see if I can recover any of the ones I fired, the site is not cooperating.)

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
"These cramped hallways are no place to fight...not that these guards are any fight. I have a bad feeling about this guys...its as if they might be spying on us as we speak. But its no time to turn around, let us keep going."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The group moves down the dusty hallway. The three rooms turn out to be empty... or filled with refuse. Which leads to the final doorway.

(Assuming the group is not stupid), Taking a time to listen at the door, you hear a woman sobbing. The door is locked... but the key is found on the person of one of the dead guards. It does appear trapped. Taking a deep breath, one of you pushes the door open.

The low vaulted chambers appears to be a wine cellar, but its bottles lie shattered on the hard stone floor. Spatters of blood red wine cover the walls and pooled on the floor. In the far corner, a woman in a wine smeared dress cowers, sobbing quietly. She looks at you and screams, her eyes wide with startled fear. The hysterical madness fades quickly from her intense dark eyes.

"You are not Mother," she says accusingly. "Who are you?"

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid looked to the others for an answer, this was not what he was expecting. He wanted to answer "not mother" but held his tongue knowing that it would only serve to inflame the situation.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam looks at the woman. "My name is Yemam Silverman...and these are my friends. We aren't here to hurt you miss...even if we are not your mother...but...um...what happened here?"

Diplomacy = 17

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius looks at the lady, "Mother, I'm Marius famous archer ... I mean, where is your mommy, maybe we can help you find her?" Marius looks at Yemam hoping that somehow helped.

I did it again dad Marius laugh silently to himself, realizing his mind did it again.

Aid Another (Yemam)=14

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The woman recoils, pushing herself against the far wall. She trying to get away from someone... anyone.

"Please! Don't hurt me! I didn't mean it. I didn't mean any of it. I'm sorry, mother. I'm so sorry!"

Her condition is terrible. Her focus is shifting from you to those not even there.

Quote from: Unkabear
"Isabelle?" Hassid asked wondering if this was the young girl cursed to raise her doom or a sibling or child of her.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
The woman makes Marius uneasy, he does his best to keep the his mind from betraying him and keeps the focus on the situation. One of his eyes jumps to a shadow, "No. Not now!" he bellows out.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
(OOC: Sorry for the absence. Been sick. Still sick. Getting better slowly.)

"Ask her again, Yemam... she will have maybe half a minute of clarity if this works."

Ioan then invokes Calm Emotions.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
"What happened here, miss? We can't help you if you don't tell us. Who is your mother?"

Diplomacy = 30

As Yemam askes his questions, he quickly looks around to where she is looking.

Spot = 28

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Ioan's spell takes almost immediate effect. The woman seems to gather herself. The most noticeable signs are her hands and demeanor. She pulls her legs more underneath her. She sits a little straighter, one hand going to her hair, trying to unknot the matted mass.

"Mother? Oh, yes. I'm sorry. My mother is dead. She... well... it's been years. I must have, well... I haven't been myself."

With her other hand, she pushes herself up to her knees. She is well below you as you all stand on a small wooden landing. A set of wooden stairs goes down to the cellar. Wooden shelves rise up all around her. They used to hold a king's ransom in wine. Now they hold dust and broken glass. And maybe spiders.

The woman pulls her torn and dirty clothes around herself, trying vainly to cover herself completely. Oddly, her attempts to hide herself only serve to draw your attention. And you all realize this woman is a beauty like very few others. It's almost amazing the change that has come over her. She almost appears to be a new person from the deranged victim you saw when you entered the cellar.

She addresses the group, "We must leave this place. Quickly! He will be back soon and we must be far away when that happens. I promise you each a reward that will quite literally change your life." (Each of you is quite sure that she is promising you that she will be yours as part of that reward.) "I will answer questions to your content once we are somewhere safe."

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan waits, feeling the seconds tick as he concentrates on maintaining the spell.

"Questions, Yemam... we're in a hurry here."

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid looked to Ioan and shook his head. I do not believe that now is a time for questions. Let us be away from here before the Dukkar returns." He then began to search the hallway behind him for the boy. They would need to be away from this place soon. Perhaps even bring the girl back to her people unless that would bring the Dukkar to them.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
"Perhaps my friend, but knowledge is power" Marius stopped himself so as not waste time ...

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The woman agrees. And moves quickly to the base of the stairs. As she begins to ascend the stairs, Hassad hears a noise... footsteps above you. Someone... no, make that multiple someones are upstairs.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam puts his hand up to stop the party for a moment. In whispered tones he says, "Friends, I believe we have attracted company. Maybe we should look for an alternate path or I could try and distract them."

Looking towards the woman. "Miss, my only questions right now are who is after you and who would be upstairs. These questions are quite important to our survival."

Meanwhile...Yemam makes his quick glances around looking for the boy in black.

Move Silently = 13
Spot = 26

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid shakes his head "I think I should go first. If for nothing else as you and Marius are more deadly with your bows and can keep whomever is there at a distance from Ioan and the girl." And he had full faith that he could plow through and grab thier attention if he were to burst through first.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
"Whatever you think is wise my friend," Marius smiled toward Hassid. He tested the string of his bow and grabbed an arrow from his quiver, "ready when you are. They will fall, you have my word on it my friend!"

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan hefts his warhammer, and gestures absentmindedly over the holy symbol at his chest. "Ready" He mutters.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
At the merest mention of someone upstairs, the woman begins to loose control of herself again. She pulls against Ioan, trying to dash back down the stairs. Her eyes have lost what clarity they may have had. Nothing matters anymore except getting away.

Hassad moves forward. He can hear people at the top of the stairs that lead down into the basement. He cannot make out the words but someone... a woman or a boy... is giving orders.

There is no other way out of here. The only egress is up the stairs, into the pantry and into the kitchen. Once there, there are many different ways out of the room, windows, doors, etc.

((BTW, the new board at groovygamers.com is set up. Over this week, I'll be copying files. We won't start using those boards until all the copying is done. Probably the first posts of March.))

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
((This first combat post will be a little out of init. sequence. Makes more sense. Things will sort out next round.))

Hassid burst into the room at the top of the stairs swinging his sword at the first person that was poor fortuned enough to be on the other side. It turns out to be another one of the mindless soldiers. Who dies quickly and cleanly. He sees another soldier in his way. And a child behind him.

Yemam is hot on his heals. Unfortunately, the low ceiling interferes with his ability to attack. However, Yemam's keen eyes finally spot what he has so long been looking for... the boy in black. For no other description fits as well. The young man looks to be maybe twelve years old. He has thick blck curly hair that frames his almost cherubic face. He is dressed entirely in black. Rish clothes of the latest fashion. But all black. His eyes are dark as well.

Marius will not be able to provide cover fire until he gets up the stairs and at least into the pantry. And memory would tell Marius that the pantry was a crowded little room with little space to fire in.

Ioan bows his head and invokes Bless upon his allies. The woman flees back into the wine cellar, hiding from the people up stairs.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Yemam calls out as soon as he spots the boy in black, giving all the party a heads up. From where he's standing, he can bring his bow to bear, but his nerves throw the shot.

Marius is not able to get a shot off at the boy. He is too far down the stairs to clear his arrow over the floor. However, he can still threaten the soldier and give a boost to Hassid's efforts to fight the boy.

Ioan looks into the fray, and invokes Spiritual Weapon. A warhammer springs into existance next to The Child, and attacks... The boy looks shocked at the development as the force weapon strikes him. Almost like a bully who has finally been tbloodied.

Hassid tries to move forward but fails to pass the soldier. However, thanks to Marius interference, the guard is not able to strike Hassid either.

The boy looks directly at Hassid, and a piercing glow seems to shine from his face. Hassid feels a stirring in his heart. (WILL save for Hassid, DC 18, you get a +2 to your roll thanks to the amulet the vistani gave you. If you fail, Hassid will act as if the boy is his best friend and most trusted ally and will move to defend him at all costs.) The amulet that Hassid wears does glow in response to the boy's supernatural attack.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Yemam walks over to the boy. In his determined walk, Yemam drops his bow and draws his rapier. Focusing so intently on the boy, Yemam does open himself up to an attack from the guard. Fortunately, the distraction provided by Hassid means the guard misses. Yemam swings his blade. Despite the fact that the boy wears no armor, something moves the blade enough that it fails to connect.

Seeing the precision in Hassids swing Marius figures he has things under control. "It's time to discipline that little brat," Marius shouts with much bravado. he does his best to get to get into better position aiming to kill and lets an arrow lose. A lesser archer would have had to adjust his shot to compensate for Yemam's attack. Luckily for the party, Marius is no lesser archer and the shaft strikes home.

Ioan breathes a heavy sigh of relief when he sees Hassid's amulet flash. "Good ol' Vistani magic," he mumbles, as his spirit-weapon again swings at The Child. The force weapon misses this time, however, as the magics surrounding the boy deflect the animated warhammer.

Having been in the service of the Legates and the other servants of Izrador Hassid had learned a few things about shaking off the effects of control. And though the boy was powerful Hassid this time managed to fight off the effects of whatever the boy wanted him to do. Hassid whips his blade in a certain arc and drops the last remaining guard in a single blow.

The boy is indignant... furious at this intrusion. With a mere glance, he turns his attention to Yemam, (WILL save, DC 18, +2 thanks to the vistani amulet. If you fail, Yemam will act as if the boy is his best friend and most trusted ally and will move to defend him at all costs.) Yemam's amulet glows in response to the boy's supernatural attack.

Without waiting to see what the response is, the boy then... disappears. He literally flashes in a blip of reddish/orange light and then is not there.

But his voice can still be heard drifting for somewhere in the house, "Who are you to intrude on my home? Did my mother summon you to do her bidding?" ((A new map won't go up until you've located the boy again.))

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Yemam stands in the doorway, near where the boy had stood. He turns back to the party, "Guys, why don't we just leave...I mean...he's just a kid."

Marius turns to Yemam, "What did you just say? Locke did you hear that?"

Ioan is shocked into silence.

Hassid holds his sword, Yemam's question chilling his heart. He had felt the boys power. Now, his friend is under the boy's sway.

Somewhere, you hear the boy giggle.
