Quote from: DM Van Helsing
As the situation with the children and the wine caskets becomes more stable, the action moves with Adam as he clutches in desperation to the side of the runaway horse. The animal has no where to go. At some point along the constricted port road, the beast will be forced into the harbor... where it will drown. The only question is will it take Adam... or someone else... with it.

Yemam lets an arrow fly, attempting to separate the ragged torn harness from the animal. In his desire to ensure that he does not strike his friend, he ensures that he misses. The arrow flies past the horse and eventually ends up embedded in the side of a large ocean-going vessel. Numerous yells and people dodging out of the way remind the scout that this a crowded dock.

Adam chooses to let go, there is nothing more he can do for this animal. And it does not seem wise to give his life in a doomed cause. He slips free and tumbles onto the rough cobblestone road. As he flips over, he suffers numerous small bruises [-7 hp] but nothing serious or life threating.

It seems the animals fate is decided, when something that could happen only in Ravenloft occurs. A man, riding a horse hard, faded into existence at the side of the runaway horse. He is of a stranger color and dressed in a fashion unlike most of you have seen. Although Adam has memories of this kind of dress from his life before the mists. The horseman reaches out and grabs the torn harness. Maintaining control of his mount, he leans over and speaks to the panicked horse. With only a few feet to spare before the road forces them both into the water, he calms the animal and brings it to halt. Turning, he leads the now docile beast of burden back to when Adam lies.

"Does this horse belong to you?"

((Welcome to a new player! Please take this chance to introduce yourself to the group. The rest of you, this is your chance to begin to get to know him. Also, another player will be joining soon. (We are having some technical issues we'll get sorted out.)

Also, I want you to tell me what you would like to do in the city of Karina. Of course, I have a default path I can lead you down, but I would rather let you take the lead and explore the stories to be found in the carnivale of wine.))

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam slowly walks over to the horseman, apologizing to all the citizens he barely missed along the way.

"Hello good sir. My name is Yemam Silverman. Who might you be?"

After this getting to know period I'll post what Yemam wants to do in town. That is unless you want it right away.

Quote from: Unkabear
As Hassid gallops through the forest the fog begins to thicken, he trusts his horse with his life and lets his companion StarDancer take its lead and Hassid relies upon his steeds instincts. The fog continues to thicken, but between heavy fog and Fell Hassid would take the fog any day. He had little regret leaving Omar behind him, perhaps the Fell would do him in and this infernal hunt would be over, but Hassid would not swear by the Riding Host that his luck would be that good.

The Fog began to lighten and thin out. This was strange as it was closing on midnight, what curse of Izrador could this be. When the mist cleared Hassid was charging through a busy city street and it was most assuredly no longer night. This was not a city that he was accustomed to, therefore it must be a Cursed place that with the raising of the sun would return to the earth whence it came. But the people were not mists and shadow as he had heard the Gnome tales of, it all seemed wrong.

Hassid realized quickly that he was next to another horse that was out of control. Something had frightened this horse and someone was going to get hurt. Though a quick glance as to where the horse was headed spelled disaster. Hassid again gave StarDancer the reign and leaned off the saddle to take the torn harness of the scared beast. As he took the harness he also touched the horses neck and spoke soothing words into the horses ear as he tilted the head back and using his ankles gave StarDancer the command to slow down. The three of them managed to come to a complete stop just short of the water. If he had acted but a moment later he would have most assuredly gotten wet. And who knows what Fell might lurk in the waters of this place.

Hassid then with the other animal in tow walked back to the man who had been dragged along for part of the horses wild run. "Does this horse belong to you?" He asked noting the cuts and bruises that would hurt in the morning. He was far enough from Sharuun that he would not be recognized. He had never in the service of Izrador ventured this far north. He felt safe to speak with these people even though if morning did arrive breaking the illusion he may be cursed to walk this town forever. But he was committed now so it didn’t much matter.

Yemam Silverman wrote:

"Hello good sir. My name is Yemam Silverman. Who might you be?"

Hassid looked down upon the man noting that he was a warrior of some sort, he would need be weary, but there were also many warriors in the resistance, yet no one of any land that he knew of dressed as this man did, or anyone else standing in the street. “Well met Yemam. My name is Hassid, might I inquire as to where I am. I do not remember any town or city east of Erenhead along the Sea of Pelluria?” But stranger things have happened in Eredane since Izrador’s fall.

Handle Animal (22) Ride (32)

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam looks to the sky, "Strange one we have here, huh Locke?"

Looking again at Hassid, "We are in the town of Karina and apparently it is a time of celebration. The people who live here and the many travelers who have recently arrived are celebrating the carnivale of wine."

"But judging from your quirky arrival and your question, I assume the strange mists have brought you here. In any case, I'm sure there is one cart driver that is quite happy that you saved his distressed horse."

Yemam again smiles towards the new arrival. "Come we can talk some more over an flask of wine or a pitcher of ale. By the look of you, it seems you could use the rest."

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid nodded to the man who spoke with the sky? He looked up toward the cart that matched the torn harness of the horse that he led and nodded. It would seem that it would be the proper place to return the horse to. A horse, even one not trained for riding would be a fine prize for any thief, easy to sell for transport or meat. Even a horse of great age can be sold quickly for those who know how. “Wine sounds good right now. Though I am not sure about what you speak of the mist.” Hassid travelled through the mist yes, but how could it take him to such a place as this. Was this the work of one of the Night Kings? What in the Riding Host was this man speaking of.

“Let us return this animal to his rightful owner then we will speak more of wine and rest.” Hassid used his knees to give StarDancer a signal to head to the wagon. All the while the once mad horse in tow.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam thinks to himself that surely this man must either be a powerful mage or mad. He doesn't know of the crazed mists of Ravenloft?

"Well then Hassid, lets give this now relaxed horse back to its rightful owner and then find a table to enjoy a flask of wine."

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid nodded and approached he cart driver, “Kind sir might this be yours?” He asked rhetorically as he passed the animal back to the rightful owner and dismounted himself. Taking the saddle bags off the saddle slinging them over his shoulder. He adjusted his sword on his back and the Cedeku at his hip and nodded to Yemam to lead the way. Hassid hoped that his supply of gold would last a bit. But eventually Hassid knew that it would run out. But as he is out of the Sarcosan lands he might have to start bartering as gold may have become useless. But then Yemam spoke of a carnivale of wine, perhaps the casks would be open and flowing freely.

ooc: Trying to leave it open if anyone else would like to join in.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Seeing Hassid's nod in his direction, Yemam looks around and finds the nearest tavern. He opens the door and scans that area quickly for an empty table. Finding one that just got clear, he quickly motions for Hassid to follow him and dashes toward the table to sit.

Yemam quickly sits downs as the rest of the crowd looking for a seat finally notices it. He soon grabs the nearest serving wench and asks her, "Good lady, what is the most favored wine you serve? My new friend and I have aquired a thirst and would like to quench it."

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan catches up with the rest of the group, a little breathless from his exertions (and the expiration of Bull's Strength).

"Hi. Umm... I'm Ioan. That was a neat trick with the horse. Almost as neat as appearing in exactly the right place, at exactly the right time, moving in exactly the right direction."

Ioan scowls in frustration. It's not a pleasant expression, since his face is ugly enough without being bunched up like an empty, inside-out wineskin.

"When the mists took ME they dumped me on an island in the middle o' nowhere, with nothin' but the clothes on my back. Oh! Speakin' o' which!"

Ioan looks around and collects his fallen gear, including his armor... which he shamelessly proceeds to don in full public view.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid @ random Tavern/Inn getting ready to get plastered 53/53 Random Roll = 6

Hassid nods to the new arrival, his face stoic. It would seem as if he was a cross of an Orc and…well even Dorns aren’t that ugly! He could not be an Orc reject as they would have eaten him at birth. Its mannerisms were a bit better than the lad talking to the sky, but Hassid was by every moment passing by what curse of Izrador has he fallen into. If nothing else Hassid knew one thing for sure. They were not associated with the Dark Forces, they would have both been killed a long time ago if they had been.

“Well met Ioan,” Hassid greeted the newcomer as he looked with longing toward where the serving girl was with his wine. Perhaps a clouded head might make the circumstances easier to accept. Besides, when the sun rose for real above the horizon Hassid would be swallowed with the rest of this town into nothing.

He took a seat across from Yemam and eased his weapons for comfort. “I cannot account for my appearance as I do not know what in name of the Riding HostI am doing here!” He gathers himself from his near outburst with a slight breath, “The last thing that I remember I was riding hard to flee the Fell and arrived in this city next to a mad horse, I could not let the beast fall into the water as it were. Who knows what could have been waiting there for it to break the surface. And no matter how ill kept an horse may be it does not deserve such a death.”

Quote from: Adam Godson
Adam picks himself up from the ground and dusts off the dirt and grime. He will leave the healing until later as a reminder against doing foolish things. Pain helps him to remember.

He gathers his armor follows the group into the tavern. Unlike Ioan he will wait for a better location to don his armor. He sits at the table with the group and extends his two hand in greeting to Hassid.

"Greetings, I am Adam and am also a stranger to this land" he states as he examines the newcomer. He notes mainly his weapons and armor.

"Thank you for your help with the run away horse. As you can see my attempts proved fruitless except for some laughs for the crowd. You appear a good horseman and your mount a noble steed. The One must have put you in our path for a reason."

After careful examination Adam continues his conversation. "You have a familar appearance about you, perhaps your manner of dress or speaking. Where did you come from?"

Diplomacy roll (1d20+6=26)

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid stood and took Adams hands and replied“I hail from Sharuun” he said as if everyone at the table knew where it was “And StarDancer has been with me…”What would he say, Since the Legates came and tore him away from his parents? Since he was enlisted in Izradors army? No that would not do, not yet, those were hard truths that he was not quite ready to grapple with “For many years,” he said softly “not long after I attained manhood and my horserights. And he is a fine and noble steed.” Hassid said the last bit in thanks to Adam as he sat down again.

“What is this mist that you speak of? And though I may be a traveler you speak as if I have two heads. Am I not in Eredane along the Sea of Pelluria?” Hassid leans back in his chair, “Next I guess you will tell me that you have never seen the sight of an Orc!”

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The crowd at the scene of Hassid's appearance all move quickly away giving you all a wide berth. But since the group is getting to know the stranger, they don't seem to notice.

Their notoriety follows them into the tavern. And as they sit and talk, word of these brave and valorous... not to mention mysterious... heroes spreads like wildfire through the revelers of carnivale.

((Excellent work everyone! Keep it up. Bonus boxes will be awarded.

BTW, I find myself in the sleepy little town of Vernal for the next two days (on work assignment - not by choice). I will have limited computer access at night, but won't be my normally responsive self. New posts will come very night. But the July XP awards won't go out until Friday. Sorry!))

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"Oookay, then." Ioan rolls his eyes a bit.

"The mists... they cloud the mind, and when you emerge from them, you're someplace else. As to this 'urine-dine' place near 'pell-urea' you think you're in, you're not. Blame the mists."

"Oh, and I've never seen anything called an 'ork' before. Is it a kind of boat, or a breed of horse? Orks might be common where you're from, but right now that's where you're FROM, not where you ARE."

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Looking at Hassid, Yemam is most obviously confused.

"So, you say that you do not truely know of the mists and you name these weird places as if we are to know them...I wonder..."

A moment passes by before Yemam continues, "...yes...well...as my friend Locke points out...maybe you are from a different realm far from our most sour lands of Ravenloft? Have one as you even heard of Ravenloft before?"

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid’s grew confused. “Ravenloft?” he said very carefully making sure to enunciate it correctly. “I have never heard of such a city as this. The settlement looks to be too well established to be a new development. By what curse of Izrador have I befallen?” Hassid places both hands upon the table and resettles himself. He had been doing this a bit too often of late than he would like. “You speak of a different land? Have no knowledge of Orcs? And insist that one can be carried by Mist from one location to another? I know not what you all speak of, but I think that you are all crazy.”

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The barmaid happens to be bringing the drinks as Hassid spills that he knows nothing of Ravenloft. The wench sighs before making an intricate sign with her hand. Those who had traveled with Timothy saw him make it often, usually in regards to the Vistani.

"An outsider? If that's the case, I'm gonna need to see your coins now... before I give you these drinks. Last outsider that came through here tried to pay with money written on paper! Can you believe that?"

Quote from: Unkabear
This was becoming stranger by the moment. If he were in a cursed pocket then he was eternally doomed. But then again, if he ere in a cursed pocket then he could have been in a worse place than this Ravenloft. At least they have never heard of Orcs. Hassid decided that if he were cursed to remain here he might as well fully commit. He took a silver coin from a pouch at his belt and held it up to the barmaid. “Would this suffice?” He really didn’t know. The farther north one got the less coin was worth. But he would be damned if he were to not haggle with her.

Barter and trade seemed to be the money of the land, but in the south the Legates were insistent that coin still be used, even though inflation has made it all but worthless. But on the bright side if he was in fact in another place he should be well off for a while as his pockets were still full. Though all of the coins were minted with the faces of House Shanduz, most people cared about the weight of a coin and not the face printed on it.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan watches the exchange of currency, and ponders the concept of paper coins. As he contemplates how difficult it would be to keep them from tearing, he remembers that Adam and Totsenwhatsit got torn up a bit trying to stop the horses.

He looks over at his friends.

"Adam, Tots... do you need help? I can't tell if those bruises are shaped like horseshoes or cobblestones, but they're makin' you near as ugly as me."

Quote from: Adam Godson
Adam pulls two gold coins from this pouch and pushes them to the table in front of the barmaid.

Looking straight into her eyes he begins speaking knowing that his statement and actions will probably offend the maid, however that is no reason to avoid the truth.

"You are not the only outsider here. I also come from another land not of this world. I can't explain how, but the Lord saw fit that I ended up here rather than dying upon the sword of my good friend."

"Maid, take my gold. It is good even though I'm an outside. I will help our friend here find suitable currency for the future."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Hassid brings his silver out about the same time Adam gets gold from his pouch. The maid looks at them both before taking the silver.

"Those'll both do here."

She spreads the mugs around to the seven of you and leaves, another sign to ward off evil. At this point, Ioan actually notices that Raul is no where in sight. In fact, Ioan cannot remember seeing or hearing from the Vistani smith (or his son) since the whole incident with the wine cart and the spooked horses.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"Oh! Raul! And NIKKI!"

"They're here in town without a penny to their name!"

Ioan rushes to the door, and yells into the street.

"RAUL! Where ARE you?"

Quote from: Unkabear
(Never show all of your money )Hassid thought to him self. (You have no bargaining rights if you pull a purse.) But the silver was taken and drinks spread. A silver might have purchased one glass back in Sharuun, and further north even less. This would require meditation. Perhaps the purse that he brought with him might last a bit longer than he had thought.

Ioan’s outburst almost cost Hassid his drink. Who was this Roan? How many more were there to their party? Perhaps Hassid had made a great mistake after all and he was being led into a trap. He must be on his guard always. Though truth be told, this would not change anything from life at court. As to the outburst, after recovering his drink he only raised an eyebrow to the direction of Ioan as he brought the drink to his lips and tasted what he was getting himself into.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan returns to the table looking dejected.

"I'd get lost out there looking for 'em. I'm sure Raul will be okay... I just never got a chance to say thank you. You know... for letting me help."

Looking at Hassid... "Raul's wife died, and came back as something evil, haunting him, and slowly killing his infant son. We killed her, and then the mists took us all."

"And then we hitched a ride on a boat, and almost got eaten by wolves. And then we ended up here, and chased some horses and saved some kids."

Charisma Roll=2

He looks around, and realizes that nobody outside of the table is listening, and almost nobody AT the table is listening.

*sigh*. "Somebody else tell it. Stories like this are supposed to be good for free drinks, right?"

Quote from: Unkabear
Lowering his mug Hassid noticed that Ioan had returned "I'm sorry, were you saying something?"
Random Roll = 20

ooc I'm sorry, but I had to.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam sits and wonders what Ioan is talking about and then finall figures out it has to do with an adventure that occured before he met with the group.

Looking towards Hassid, "I believe our friend was beginning a story of the way the original group met. I have only started traveling with them recently and so have missed out on the obviously confusing tale. Maybe someone else would like to recount the story for our new friend?"

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"Edgy here" Ioan gestures at Edgar "can tell it better'n most. He's a poet. He might even be able to put it to song."

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan smiles as Edgar looks up from his drink and begins to speak. Fortunately for the party, Edgar takes their attention away from Ioan's smile, which is the sort of thing that kicks off bad dreams.

(OOC: Per DM permission, I'm posting this on Edgar's behalf)

Quote from: Edgar wrote:
"My friends and I (and they are friends after all we've endured and conquered in the final week of the waxing moon, though we've known each other but that scant week) first met in a quaint Barovian tavern, where we were all strangers in town and to each other. Apt, then, that the mistress of the inn thought to put us all at the same table.

In that first night together we heard stirrings of rebellious patriotism and what is possibly the saddest music mortal ears can comprehend. The music came from the distant violin of Raul, whom you, Yemam, have met. Stirred to unease by both, we prepared to settle in for the night when a horrible fire struck the smithy. We found ourselves banding together to help fight it, and further found ourselves questing to capture those responsible.

A day's investigation brought us to the site of a murder gone wrong. The fire at the smithy was the very flame of vengeance, wrought by an Effigy of a murdered Lord, and that same Effigy sought us as victims.

We all lost an eyebrow or two, but revenge's flames were quenched.

Rising the next morning, we sought to equip ourselves, but with the smithy in ashes and the smith dead our only option was to shop with the Vistani smith at the edge of town.

Hassid... as an outsider you do not know of the Vistani. They are not human, but they walk among us. They are not gods or demons, either, but they are... gifted. Our friend Ioan is half-Vistani, which in part explains his troublesome visage. "

Ioan nods. "'Troublesome eh?'"

Quote from: Edgar wrote:
"To some, my friend.

The Vistani Smith was none other than Raul, and while we struggled to win him over, eventually he agreed not only to trade with us, but he also entrusted us with a secret. His sorrowful music was summoning the shade of Leyla, his deceased wife. She would return to him each night and nurse their infant son, Nikki.

Nikki drew no nourishment from this, however, and Raul felt helpless to save his son. We agreed to observe that evening, and when Leyla returned it quickly became clear that some great evil worked within her to destroy Raul, Nikki, and any who would stand in her way.

While the rest of the party sought to do battle with an insubstantial (yet quite consequential!) evil, I learned that Raul's instrument was strung, at least in part, with her hair. I weakened her by destroying it in a fire, but she remained lethal enough. Worse still, The Mists began to close around us.

I don't recall the end of that battle, but Ioan assures me that as we each fell to the mists, he finished Leyla with the very healing blessings he has since used to our benefit. The dead, it would seem, take great injury from the energies of light.

We awoke on an island, little more than a spit of land, in the middle of this same great river which flows past us now. With us were Raul and Nikki, Raul's bardo, and a stranger, now friend, Yemam.

The rest of the tale you've heard, or even taken part in. We begged rescue from a lone expert sailor, whose vessel we later saved during an attack by wolves, led by the most Dire variety. Yemam proved himself quite adept, but all fought well. A day and tuppence later we found ourselves here."

Edgar, by now quite dry, smiles and turns back to his ale.

Ioan grins, flashing yellow teeth and bits of breakfast.

"I KNEW it would sound better if you told it, and that's not even your best work. Your next drink's on me... just make sure the next time you tell it you put in some rhymes, or maybe some music. Oh, and put in more bits about me. I like those."

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid nods and looks toward 'Edgy', perhaps he might be able to make sense of things. Though bards & poets littered Court and not often did they speak intelligibly. But then, they were bards & poets of Izrador...so perhaps Edgy might speak intelligibly. But then it would seem that he may be the only one so far.

As the story unfolded Hassid was reminded of many an epic...and so far this was not one of them. But it was a beginning, and perhaps may grow to become such. It spoke of deads of good and honor though. Even to assist one such as Rual. These were not men in the shadow, but how long could they stand? Hassid found himself desiring to lend his arm.

For not the first time today Hassid found himself wondering what in the shadow of Izrador had he gotten himself into.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
((Nice work, Howard! That's worth some bonus XP next award.))

The barmaid returns to fill your drink. And as you sit and talk, the sun begins to sink. As it does, the patrons of the bar leave. But... unlike most of Ravenloft... (those of you with experience in Ravenloft know) they do not leave huddled against the growing dark and with fear in their eyes. No... these men and women leave with gaiety and mirth. The party is about to start - and it's not found on the docks.

((I just realized I never awarded XP boxes for last weeks posts. Here they are! Adam got a box for humility - you are doing a great job preparing for Prestige Paladin. Hassid gets his first box for horses. Ioan gets a box for innocence. You also get a box for acceptance for your many posts catching the new addition up (and as reward for the post you made on Edgar's behalf. Yemam got a box for loyalty. Next month, when the regular XP awards go out, I'll post where everyone is on filling that up.))

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan notices the odd demeanor of the exiting patrons. He has learned a lot about this world in his travels, but is wise enough to know that he doesn't know everything.

This, however, makes little sense. The night is frightening, and is best faced with strong drink, unconsciousness, and prayer that an end coming in the dark will be swift.

Naturally, these thoughts give rise to utterance... one that is unfortunately colored with ale, unease, and a blast of halitosis.

Charisma Roll=0

"Barmaid, what in the HELL is wrong with these people?"

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid looks to Ioan and with a furrowed brow exclaims to him “Be at ease Ioan. As the festival goes on the night grows long and the wine will flow! Have you not been to a festival?” Hassid leaned back in his chair and nursed his mug for a moment, “Let them have their merriment for but a night, we all should surly deserve such.”

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"You hail from funny parts if celebrations can run long into the night, Hassid. Night is DANGEROUS."

Ioan thinks for a moment...

"But I've never been HERE at night. Timothy couldn't stop talking about this party. If y'all want to go see it, I'll tag along, maybe wear a sack over my head."

Ioan finishes his ale, drops coin on the table, and gathers his gear.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
"Ioan, calm down and have a drink...our new friend obviously didn't know of the dangers of the night in Ravenloft. Hopefully the celebration is protected against the threats. And if not, we should be out there in any case making a lookout and enjoying ourselves a little."

"And there is no need for a sack over your head. If the people here have a problem with you, then we can try to talk them into not having one."

Yemam grabs his gear places some money on the table and looks to the others on what they are going to do.

Quote from: Adam Godson
Adam nods in agreement with the others about about attending the party. Some gaiety and non-lethal excitement would be a good change of pace. He approaches the barmaid for the use of a room to change into his armor. He will pay gold if needed so he can have the privavy needed to change into the armor.

Once changed he will join the group as they move into the festival. As a precaution he will hang his money bag around his neck inside his armor.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid nodded and stood up readjusting his equipment one more time. It was about time to check on StarDancer anyway. He then gave a slight bow and directed toward the door with his arm and left the building making his way to where he tied up his horse.

He greeted StarDancer by rubbing his nose and then walked down the fine animal to offer her comfort. This was a difficult place for her to be. She would rather run the wilds than any city, the cut stone and timbers felt wrong to her and Hassid knew it. He tried to subject her to as little of city life and of stables as possible, often letting her roam free overnight to claim her in the morning. Digging into the saddlebags over his shoulder he fetched a carrot and gave it to her. All the while stroking her neck. “All is well Little Lady, all is well, I shall return you to a more natural place soon” If I can, He almost said aloud, but knew better not to. She could already feel the words he could sense. “All is well.”

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
After preparations, the group heads into Karina proper. Passing down the main road, you pass under a deep gate through the city wall. It's 15' tall and approx. 6' thick. It is there that you have your first encounter with city officials.

Four soldiers stand watch. They seem determined to do two things. First, get celebrants, merchants, and citizens through the gate as quickly as possible. Second, collect the toll from every one. Two guards stand back, hands limply on weapons, like any cop who doesn't expect trouble but is ready for it nonetheless. There are two lines, each being processed by a single guard. One line seems to be for merchants, and is moving much slower. All the partiers and individuals are in the other line. All the guards are wearing studded leather armor and have battle axes in their belts. One by one, as each of you get to the head of the line, you are stopped by a single guard.

The guard casts his eye appraisingly up and down, "What'll it be? It's a single silver if you leave your weapons behind. It's a gold if you wanna stay armed. And if you're bringin' an animal into town, it's gonna cost ya ten gold. If you have any salable goods, you need to get into the other line. There's a five percent tax on items. If you're caught selling in the city limits without the stamp, your stuff will be confiscated."

It's a practiced speech. And you each must answer.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache

Totschlager straggles along with the group. He has been silent this whole time, struggling with a sense of... weirdness... since his fight with the dire wolf. The newcomer Hassid is no more strange to Totschlager than the rest of the new experiences he has been encountering. Hassid seems friendly enough and also seems like he would be an able ally in a fight, but Totschlager says nothing to him. Instead, Totschlager ambles silently with the group, staying close to the the ugly cleric Ioan who has been so helpful with his healing powers.

Totschlager thinks silently about Raul and the baby but is again overcome with something... odd... within.

During a break in conversation and action, Totschlager will say briefly to Ioan, "My friend, I fear something may be wrong with me. I do not feel well at all."

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"Unwell... how?"

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam gets a gold piece out and hands it to the guard. "Just in case, you know. My friend Locke always said to be on your guard and never too far from a weapon to defend ourself with."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Ioan, Totschlager and Yemam have all paid and moved through the line. Edgar stands, finishing a gold coin from his purse. Hassid and Adam stand behind Edgar in line. The lines are orderly but boisterous.

Looking further into the city, those past the gate see a wide cobblestone road filled with humanity (a smattering of other races are present, but Ravenloft has never been noted for it's treatment of quasi-humans). Several much smaller side streets branch off. But even from where the group stands, they see that about 300 yards along the main road, the city opens up into some type of commons area. And this is where the party is! About twice that distance from the group, a tower rises above the city. Although you know it cannot possibly be, in the dying light of the sunset, the tower gleams as though it is constructed of gold.

Quote from: Unkabear
This was going to get expensive. His hand dipped into his pouch, eleven gold would be a hard hit. Even under the new exchange rate eleven gold was nothing to sneeze at. But he was not about to leave StarDancer behind, and he would be very hard pressed to relinquish Juaviers sword to anyone. If anyone tried to take it from him they would find many corpses before they would take him down. But he was given the option, and that was enough. He weighed the coins in his hand before counting them out into the guards hand.

“My thanks good man” Hassid said to the man who was just trying to get him through as quickly as possible and touched his hand to his brow, then chin then between the two as he passed leading StarDancer by the reigns into the city.

For the first time he heard Totschlager speak. The words did not bode well. Hassid said a small prayer to Dal Pashva for favor and luck. Perhaps all will be well as the cleric Ioan will be able to assist him. His wounds only seemed partial physical. There was more, but nothing that Hassid could do. He understood that some wounds could not be healed with salves and wrappings.

With StarDancer following behind him Hassid goes from the docks to the tumult of the festival.

Quote from: Totschlager
Totschlager tries to remain calm and stays close to Ioan.

"I do not know..." he says in response to Ioan's question. Totschlager tries to stay alert, but the constant bustle of the people around him is too much stimuli. He places a hand on Ioan's shoulder for support as a wave of vertigo washes over him. The vertigo passes and he says to Ioan, "I'm okay... for now."

Totschlager watches the occasion unfold before him.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
After the group had passed through the gate, they are swept with the crowd towards the large common area. It is hard to resist the enthusiasm and atmosphere. Drink is flowing everywhere.

When the group gets to the common area, they see a fully engaged marketplace. It is a wide open area, about 100 yards wide by 200 yards long. Stalls and booths are everywhere. Most sell food stuffs. But many sell cloth or metal goods. This is the place where the people of Karina buy and sell the things they make or grow. This is the normal site of commerce. The crowd is happy, milling about.

At the far end of the common, you can see a large stone building with the words 'Town Hall' carved into a curved archway over the main door. Directly in front of the town hall, a gallows has been freshly constructed, as you can tell by the un-weathered wood. It is a stark contrast to the genial mood of the carnivale.

Quote from: Totschlager
Totschlager sees the gallows and a sinking feeling of familiarity fills his soul. The gallows represents something he indentifies with in a really disturbing way... something from his past. For some reason he immediately thinks of his Vistani friend, Raul. Why would I think of Raul right when I see a gallows, he thinks to himself. He scans the crowd for Raul, maybe he and Nikki slipped into town.

Search (1d20=17)

The odd feeling welling up inside of him is making him very anxious. He still sticks close to Ioan still for the time being.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid took in the sights. But the freshly built gallows loomed ominously on the horizon. Its prominent position screamed that it would be central to the celebration. Finally this began to feel like home. Hassid began to look around for Orcs and Legates as he attempted to blend into the crowd wearing foreign cloths and leading a horse. Perhaps the festivities would continue to throw off the casual observer. Usually if Gallows were constructed a person was already decided upon as to who would wear the rope. If it were a random selection the festivities would not be so carefree. Unless the purpose was to sedate the populous…the train of thought began to drift into dangerous territory and Hassid wiped it from his mind. He took a flowing mug from a passerby and looked into it suspiciously. That at least would not change.

Quote from: Totschlager
Aside to Ioan: "Do you think we should be concerned about Raul and Nikki?"

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam looks at the gallows and then looks at the sky. "Locke, I can believe this to be a party. In either case, its good to know you're here watching my back...what do you mean you're going to go party?"

Yemam shakes his head and grabs a drinks thats offered to him. He drinks up and makes his way to get a better look at the gallows.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid swirls the wine in its cup lifting it to his nose and inhaled lightly. Though he was waiting for his new companions to drink and see if there was anything more to the wine than wine. Though all the while he had a smile on his face and one hand on StarDancers halter.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
As the group heads north, towards the gallows, they begin to notice signs that this marketplace will soon close. The unmistakable signs of last sale of the day abound. It does not appear that the party is over, however, as masses of people move past the gallows through a narrower road at the northeast corner of the common market.

A faint smell of sawdust reinforces the perception that these gallows are new. Also new is a fresh rope that lies coiled on the floor of the gallows, next to the trap door that will drop some poor unfortunate soul to his or her doom. Or perhaps this gallows will service more than one victim. At any rate, two small children incongruously play among the support beams of the structure... an impromptu jungle gym. A solitary soldier stands watch in front of the town hall. Dressed much as his compatriots at the main gate, studded leather and axe, he has a distinctly wistful look on his face as he sees the festival get started... without him.

Suddenly, a thunderous ringing bell fills the air! The citizens of Karina take no notice as the party snaps around to the source of the sound. The tall golden tower visible from the docks now shows a clock face. Or perhaps it was always there and the group is simply close enough to make it out against the glare.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan, to Tots: "I think I'll always worry about them, but Raul... weighs less? Yeah. Weighs less than he used to. I think he'll do fine, and Nikki with him."

"I mean... there's no way they built the gallows for Raul. They had no way to know he's coming."

And then Ioan is mumbling again...

"unless they've been planning on hanging SOMEBODY, and don't much care who, as long as it's somebody who looks different enough, and doesn't fit in well. Killing Nikki wouldn't sit well with the crowd, though. If they're picking at random they'll probably pick some ugly half-breed..."

Ioan sticks close to Totschlager, and keeps his head down.

Quote from: Unkabear
The sight of the gallows was not a common one for Hassid. Most of the traitors were either beheaded on sight or brought to the Legates for torture. If the neck does not break it lends to a slow death, and opportunity for rescue. This was not something done often in the Shadow. Allow for opportunities for rescue.

The sudden chiming of the clock tower startles Hassid. He did not remember the tower, but that meant little. His mind was on other things. But the gallows still held a special place in his mind. A place of worry and concern. Ioan was always in his line of sight though. Even though the strange man was odd, and a social disgrace, he did not deserve such a fate. A staunch contrast to the forces of Izrador, Ioan was not handsome or beautiful, but is good inside. With Izrador often, at least with the Legates & human followers, there was beauty & a good deal of evil underneath. And if nothing else Hassid would not allow such a thing to come to Ioan.

This feeling of desire to protect was new to Hassid. Yet it was oddly familiar. It was what he had longed to do deep down. What the Blade Dancer was supposed to do. It felt right. For the first time Hassid felt right. “Nothing shall become of you my friend” Hassid said softly, not even sure if Ioan could hear, but it was a promise that Hassid was intending to keep.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam glances at the clock. He stares at the gallows and wonders what is going on, finally he stops one of the citizens and asks,

"Kind sir...what are these gallows for? Was someone charged with a crime?"

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"I feel conspicuous," Ioan says to everybody and nobody.

Charisma roll=1

"Really, REALLY conspicuous..."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The first person Yemam asks, just shrugs. At this point, Yemam notices the individual is dressed much more like Edgar than the locals. Luckily, a small trio of individuals dressed in the local garb are next.

"If you want a good seat for the executions, you had better get here early. All those prisoners sentenced to death during the last year will be hung until dead on the morning of the last day of the festival."

The short one in back pipes up, "I think there are seven of eight this year!"

Suddenly the crowds around you part abruptly, disgorging a sleek black horse mounted by an extraordinarily handsome noble. In his mid-thirties, he has a long scar down his right cheek. He is wearing a hunter's leathers and tall black leather riding boots and a plumed wide-brimmed hat. Those of you who had been stranded on Tear Drop Island are somewhat shocked to recognize the man you encountered there! He glares down at you from the saddle, handle on the sheathed rapier at his knee, not a glimmer of recognition in his face or voice, only haughty disdain; "Out of way, you rabble!"

In the wake of the mounted nobleman, six exhausted retainers are jogging behind their master's horse, dragged along by a pack of hounds held tightly in reign. The emaciated dogs struggle at their leashes frantically in the direction of the food vendors by the street before one of the retainers lashes them brutally with a leather crop.

Quote from: Unkabear
Without looking at StarDancer Hassid lets out a whistle and the horse dances off to the side out of the way. This man was remarkably familiar, not him personally, but his type. He was just as all those who gather at court in Sharuun. Being a foreigner Hassid knew better than to draw attention to himself. He stepped aside with StarDancer out of the mans way. All the while keeping the noble in his peripheral vision without staring at him in challenge, it would cause no end of trouble if he were to draw the ire of this man.

OOC Handle Animal 19 to have StarDancer step out of the way

Quote from: Adam Godson
Adam continues to stand in the road. No one deserves to be treated in this manner. He is not naive and realizes that people will always act in such a manner to those they feel are beneath them. However, in this part of the world he can make a difference, perhaps a small difference, but a difference. If he didn't stand up to this man he couldn't live with himself later. Here was another soul that needed to see the truth, that the Lord esteems all flesh as one.

Staring directly at the black haired man he starts a conversation. There is no posturing or veiled aggression. This is a conversation between two equals.

"Sir, it is good to see you again. As you can see we have made it off the island in the stream. Perhaps we can share a drink and tell you of our unusual experiences. You seemed highly interested back in the forest."

Diplomacy roll (1d20+6=10)

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam sees Adam make a stand for the good of humanity and the internal struggle within starts. He knows that above all else his loyalty to his new friends is what is will stand for, but he knows that this creature posing as a man has the power to ruin them all. Nonetheless, as his mind works out what he should do, his body has taken over.

Yemam stands next to Adam and begins to talk to the man as well. "Yes, good sir...how about we share a drink and you can tell us of your hunt and we can tell you of our struggles with the island. And maybe your pets and servants can enjoy some food, water, and rest as well."

OOC: I tried to roll a Diplomancy check, but apparently the die roller is down right now. Please roll a d20 and add 11 for me. Rolling Eyes

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid closes his eyes and begins a prayer to the Riding Host that he will not have to draw his sword. The nobleman was at an advantage as if the guards were called in they would be forced to take his side as they were only outsiders even if he was not their direct patron and paying their wage. The gallows was already set and it would not be a stretch to add a few more.

Hassid tensed as the others spoke…they even knew this man. He grabbed the saddle horn and prepared to leap into the saddle if their parley did not progress as desired.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
There is a moment. A pause as the man astride the horse looks at Adam, then to the rest of you. There is a moment. Tension in his body. Tension in yours.

And then recognition floods his face. "The pour souls trapped on the island! Yes, of course! It is so good to see you were not in need of the help I could not provide. Of course! A drink. To be sure. Of course, I must first wash the hunt off and make myself more presentable. I have a suite at the Laughing Maiden. Ask for Matton. We shall swap stories. I am most interested in hearing how you escaped from your predicament. Until then..."

He urges his horse onward. As he passes StarDancer, he exclaims softly, "What a beautiful horse!"

A few more paces and he turns into his saddle, "I look forward to our evening. And perhaps, I may have a business opportunity for you."

((Yemam and Adam, those were nice posts. Adam gets a check mark for Humility. And Yemam gets one for Loyalty.))

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
As The Rider departs, Ioan relaxes, and shakes his head.

"And here I was worrying about ME being conspicuous!"

He sighs, and pauses, uncharacteristically checking to make absolutely sure The Rider and his retinue are out of earshot.

"I guess if you're going to jump in front of an ass, or a horse, or both at once, coming out of it with nothing worse than a dinner invitation is just fine."

Quote from: Totschlager
"We shouldn't trust that man. He left us to rot on that island. He cannot be up to any good."

Totschlager grips his great axe a bit tighter and thinks for amoment how the rider's head would look like split open. He then cathces himself and reproves himself for the violent thought. I am not like that, he tells himself. It must be this strange feeling welling up inside of me. Totschlager sticks close to Ioan and drifts back and forth between his odd feeling and violent thoughts toward the man that left them without aid on that island.

Quote from: Adam Godson
Adam turns to Totschlager.

"I agree that we shouldn't trust this gentleman. However, something about him draws me, perhaps like a moth to the flame. We have no other plans so I suggest we dine with him. We can share our tale and perhaps learn more of him."

Turning toward the gallows he continues speaking to the rest of the group.

"Before eating I want to visit those who won't be with us tomorrow. I know from personal experience that the night before can be very lonely. Perhaps someone needs an ear to listen or a hand to hold."

"Ioan, will you join me? I believe these folks would be happy to see you."

Turning to the guard stationed at the gallows he asks.

"Good sir, where are the prisoners kept that will be hung tomorrow? Being a priest of the Lord I wish to visit them in their hour of need."

Diplomacy (1d20+6=11)

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam breathes a sigh of relief. Somehow, a situation that seemed like it would end in his name being added to the list of those at the gallows ended in a dinner. Ah well, no need to worry for now.

Turning to the Adam and Ioan before they leave and says in very hushed tones, "I'd like to come with you. As fair as these people seem on the outside, there might be one or two people sentenced for death that actually didn't do anything more than stand in the way of an angry noble. Locke and me know from experience how unfair the rich tend to become."

Of course Yemam is thinking of this Matton fellow at the moment, but it could have been any noble in this city. Whatever the case my be, Yemam accompanies his friends to the guard by the gallows with a warm smile.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"Um... sure, I'll go with you, Adam."

Ioan turns to Totschlager.

"You wanna come? We might as well ALL go."

As Ioan looks at Totschlager, seeing the warring emotions on his friends' face, he is struck by an odd notion...

He reaches into his vestments and pulls out a small, silver half-sun on a chain, only the sun is also a smiling face, canted just slightly down and to the left, as if peering above the horizon as it rises.

"Wear this for me, would you? Even if you don't worship the Morninglord, this symbol has some power to heal and protect."

Well... kind of. Ioan thinks to himself. If Totschlager has been afflicted by something seeking to possess him, his reaction to this symbol will protect those around him, and may give us warning enough to save our friend.

Bluff = 8.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid placed his hand upon Totschlager’s shoulder. “It is alright, he has passed” he said speaking of the noble “If anything we can trust for him to serve his own interest. And him staying at an inn may speak of him being a visitor as well…albeit a self important one.” Hassid concedes “We can trust that he will act in his own self interest, and as a visitor indicating us as a threat to the festival may not be in his best interest. Though I am still not saying that we should not remain on our guard. But an approach of hostility will only end in hostility.”

The call to go to the gallows and view those meant for death did not interest Hassid all that much, but the threat of the noblemen had instilled something in Hassid that he had not felt since Juavier had walked the earth. He in fact cared for these men. But when the sun rises and the city fades away it will all be for naught. Or not. Hassid was not as sure anymore if this City was destined to fade with the dawn. Hassid follows Adam not to follow him down. But to watch and make sure that nothing comes from behind. Besides he is not sure how they will take to his wearing of Weapons in the presence of prisoners.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The guard smiles, "You guys here for the celebration? Anyways, the prisoners are up there."

He points over his shoulder. In the dim twilight of day, you can see, standing on a slight bluff, overlooking the northeast corner of the city, a crumbling citadel. It has it's own wall, protecting it and seperating it from the city proper. But the wall has not been maintained. It is decripit and overgrown. The citidel itself has a literal hole in it, exposing floors.

The only thing missing now is lighting and driving rain and this place would fit the stereotypical gothic haunted citadel.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid looks at the tower and internally winced. No man deserved to be held there. And if they were the ones captured over the past year, they may have been there for months. Perhaps death might be welcome by these poor souls.

But then this would need to be real wouldn’t it. Hassid kept finding himself drawn into this grand illusion. But then again. If he were to be drawn into the ether in the morning a grand stand would not go amiss.

A wry smile creeped across Hassid’s face. Though this was not a smile filled with mirth. This was a cruel smile. A smile of a man resigned to death. If he were to be drawn into the ether in the morning…then it didn’t matter if he acted in survival. If this group were to storm that keep…Hassid’s sword would be there along with theirs. Hassid cared for these men, and would die with them.

If a person were to be listening closely to this outsider they might have heard a humorless chuckle from the man staring up at the ruined keep.

Random Roll = 2

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan looks at the castle, and around at his companions.

"In for a penny, in for a pound of flesh, or something like that. Let's have a look, but I don't want to miss drinks and dinner with our malefactorus non-rescuer."

Ioan pays special attention to Totschlager, who (OOC: unless Tots posts otherwise) is holding or wearing a silver holy symbol.

Spot=8
Sense Motive=13

Quote from: Totschlager
Totschlager asks the guard, "What manner of prisoners are they? Murderers? Thieves?"

Sense Motive against Ioan's Bluff (1d20+1=2)

To Ioan: "Thank you for this symbol, my friend. I do not remember if I worship the Morninglord or any deity for that matter. But I see in this your sincere effort to help me and I hope that this silver talisman may help me overcome this decidedly odd sensation growing in me?"

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam looks at the broken down citadel and then looks at Adam. "Well, lets check this place out, but as Ioan has said, meeting with Matton might open up some doors."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
"Oh yeah, scum. Murderers, thieves, bandits. Only the worst get sentenced to the citadel. Are any of you family, here to see the last days? If you are, check with the Captain, I know he would let you visit them... for a small donation."

Quote from: Adam Godson
Adam responds to the guard while staring at the Citadel.

"We are family in a round about way. Where can we find the Captain to gain his permission?"

Turning his gaze to the gallows he then asks.

"When will the hangings occur?"

Quote from: Unkabear
The Citadel, it sounds so civilized when you give it a name like that. Hassid thought to himself. Torture was torture, and there were as many ways to break a man as there were men.

"Are there not several days of the festival? Would there not be one or two a night?" Hassid asked believing that he heard something about that earlier in the evening.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam keeps his mouth shut during this latest statement from the guard, but thinks to himself.

::I sure hope that only the most vile get sentenced here. This place looks like it might fall apart with a strong wind. I just pray that the ones sentenced actually did their crimes and were not just poorer people at the wrong place at the wrong time::

(Voice of Locke) ::Don't worry too much about it. I am sure that the majority of them are as vile as they are now made to be. In any case, what can you do? You yourself are not rich enough to buy these men out. And what if you were. You know the nobles don't give a damn about us poor. Damn cleaned-up filth is all they are!::

::Yes, I know...but at least I can hope that somehow we can make a difference.::

A generally warm smile creeps across Yemam face at the conclusion of this inner discussion.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
"All the prisoners sentenced to death get hung on the morning of the last day of carnival. That's two days from now. As far as finding the Captain, I'm sure he's partying tonight. But he'll be back at the barracks by morning. You may not want to try and find him too early. He's not a morning person at the best of times. Tomorrow won't be the best of times. Oh, and the barracks is at the citadel. South wing."

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Turning to the group...

"Much as I'd love to give a blessing or two to the condemned, I don't think we're gettin' in tonight. I say we enjoy dinner and drinks with Horseface, get ourselves rooms, and then look into these prisoners midmorning."

"It wouldn't surprise me if every last one of 'em had a tale of woe, about how they're really innocent, and if only we'd track down the REAL killers... but there may be an innocent man among 'em who we actually CAN help."

Ioan is feeling pretty good about this dialog with his friends. He smiles.
Charisma roll=1
And then farts explosively.

"Uhhh... the inn probably has a nice outhouse, too."

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
"I have to agree with Ioan. As much as I want to help at least one soul in there, it doesn't seem like it is going to happen tonight. Let us find some rooms and enjoy ourselves as much as possible. After the freezing waters and the nightly combats, I myself look forward to a little rest and relaxation."

"Now where was that again that we were to meet Matton?"

Quote from: Adam Godson
Adam agrees with the group. It is evident that they won't be meeting witht the guard captain this evening. He asks the guard about the location of the inn that Matton suggested.

Quote from: Unkabear
It did seem to be a remarkable letdown now that Hassid was commited to go see the prisoners no matter what. It would seem that they would have to wait. Well then it would seem that this Noble would be the next item of the eve.

Hassid was weary of this noble especially of his last words..."I may have a business opportunity for you" These did not bode well. Tangling themselves up with this man could cause nothing but trouble...especially if he thought that he could purchase his horse. But it may all be on the level. Hassid of all people knew that sometimes people are not what they seem.

It was a difficult process to think beyond the negative. Hassid felt that he would be working on this for the rest of his days.

He nodded to the others and motioned for them to lead the way.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The streets leading east are filled with revelers, open shops, outdoor cafes, corner entertainers, and ale shops. You overhear this area referred to as the Wine Garden. The Garden itself is a crowded narrow plaza, a chaotic jumble of tables and chairs. At the west end of the plaza, on a raised stage, a brass band plays cheerful vignettes, while a great mass of drunken dancers stumble around in front of them. The Garden is lined with six large taverns, each packed with customers enjoying the carnival.

The six taverns are the Silver Star, the Laughing Maiden, the Clock's Tick, the Golden Fields, the Raven's Roost, & the Shield & Boar. Each is hocking it's own unique brand of wine and liqueur. In addition, you see several unusual types of alcoholic beverages you have never heard of before, Ambered (an aromatic golden wine), Glum Wine (a mellow red wine), Setarn (a delicate white wine), Shriek (a tart, brash red wine), Billy Goat (a musky beer), and Sharp (the local ale).

Quote from: Unkabear
Along thier travels through the town Hassid finds himself with a glass of Setarn and finds himself really enjoying it.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
As Yemam makes his way through the Wine Garden, he stops to purchase a bottle of this "Ambered" and a mug of Sharp. He packs the Ambered away and enjoys the local brew on his way to meet with Matton.

"Hmmmm...these people sure do know their alcohol. This stuff is surprisingly really good."

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan buys a bottle of Glum for later and a stein of Sharp for now. He's never enjoyed alcohol much, but finds this evening's drinking very, very tasty.

It's probably the company. Flavor is wasted when you drink alone.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan gestures up at the shingle for The Laughing Maiden.

"We're here. Might as well get rooms ourselves, right?"

He pauses...

"Then again, do we want to be under the same roof as Matton? There are lots of choices here, and y'all might prefer something else. Though none o' these places' names sound like 'good night's sleep,' 'cept maybe 'silver star,' as long as it's not shining through the window in my eye. Clock's tick sounds like insomnia, or maybe a really big bug. Or bad beds, if they're using hay ticks instead of proper matresses."

The mumbling continues along these lines until either Ioan is interrupted, or allowed to realize that nobody is listening.

Random d20 roll=8

Quote from: Adam Godson
Adam choose not to purchase any drink for the evening. He doesn't trust Matton. A clear head will be needed this evening as the conversations ahead will be tense. He smiles as the others enjoy their drinks. He is happy that they find joy in the party surrounding him. He wishes he could be as comfortable. He is happy with whatever Inn is chosen.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid looked up at the Laughing Maiden. He was still nursing his Setarn Hassid was remarkably unimpressed with the inn. But then he would be. Hassid again took the saddle bags off his horse and walked the fine animal behind the inn to the stables…and if there were no stables there to another inn that may have one. To the attendant Hassid gave a silver piece with instructions to StarDancer “Be good my friend.” Before joining the others. Hassid had thought to appear as separate from the others. But that would be dishonest and that is something that Hassid has been trying to move away from .

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam listens to the others' words about which inn to choose. "I quite frankly don't care where we stay, but if the common idea is that Matton cannot be trusted, then maybe we should just stay at a different inn."

Yemam takes a swig of "Sharp" and continues..."In either case, this ale is actually quite good and I recommend it to any of you. Locke does as well."

"So, Ioan...where is it that you wish to stay?"

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"The Golden Fields sounds peaceful..."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The group begins their search for lodging with the Golden Fields. They very rapidly learn that Karina is full for the carnival. There is no room at the proverbial inn. Or any of the inns. After the first pair of inns, the group separates to look for any rooms at any of the inns.

As the time for your meeting with Matton comes close, it becomes obvious that late-comers to the party are going to be sleeping on the street. Or they would, until... In front of you stands a thin individual with short white hair, the length just long enough to cover the tips of his ears. He wears simple clothing, a dark purple tunic and light green trousers, brown boots and gloves to match. Across his back he sports a well made bow with empty quiver, and a simple sword. If you look closely you see his piercing green eyes that hide hardened experience. He flashes a simple smile filled with great confidence.

"Sirs, it seems we may be able to help each other. Just this morning, I was able to engage the last room at the Raven's Roost. Unfortunately, that was a suite. I would certainly not mind sharing the expense. At it seems that you need lodging. What do you say?"

((Marius, this is your que! And yes, I know that for most of you, immediately trusting a stranger in Ravenloft is not your characters first instinct. Please see if you can find a way to roll with it.))

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Sense Motive=7

Ioan musters several pounds of tact, only to find that it's gone rancid.

"It sounds fine with me. The alternative is standing watch over each other while we sleep in the street, worrying about random thugs. This way we if we're worried we only have to keep our eyes on one guy."

Realization dawns cloudily through the ale.

"Umm..."

"You'd kinda have to trust US, though, unless you've got somebody to stand watch for you."

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid looked the man over and pondered the question. Normally Hassid would take this man into the alley and question him with his sword until his true intentions were revealed…but then Hassid was no longer that person. And he was accepted to this eclectic group easily enough. And the thought of sleeping in an alley did not sound at all pleasant to Hassid. He has been sleeping on varying hardness of ground for the past few weeks. Even a wooden floor would feel nice without a wet breeze or howls of wolves to keep one on their toes would allow for a restful sleep. And in a suit there would be a chance for at least a rug. Hassid found himself wanting to embrace this man more by the minute as the wear of constant running began to seep into his muscles and bones.

“I believe my friend that we may be able to accommodate each other, and thank you for your generosity” Hassid said again touching his fingers to brow, his chin then out to between the two of them.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
As the group talks, you can't help but notice the loudest and biggest party among all the revelers. Over at the Silver Star (the first tavern you looked for lodgings at), a wedding party is in full swing.

((Leaving time for more responses from players.))

Quote from: Adam Godson
Adam closely examines their new found benefactor. With a practiced eye he judges the lethality, confidence, and potential secrets of thier new found friend.

He starts with the clothing. Are the hems worn and tattered or well tended. Are there any unseemly stains or rips. Are the boots cared for? Are they expensive or cheap, well worn or new? Do they fit well?

How does he stand? Is he loose and carefree or tense and nervous? Does he balance on his toes or sit back on his heels. Would he be ready to attack in a fraction of a second or several seconds.

Finally, he looks for the weapons. He examines the condition of his bow. Is it well cared for? Is it strung or sitting in a protective covering?
Beyond the bow and empty quiver, what else is the man carrying. What type of sword does he carry? Where could he hide knives. Are his hands his most lethal weapon?

After this thorough inventory Adam internally posts his judgement and arranges his actions accordingly.

He approaches the man and extends both hands in the traditional greeting.

"Well met, fellow traveler. Your offer is most gracious. I, for one, will accept your kind offer. I've had enough nights on the cold hard ground. I prefer a nice soft bed or perhaps a cozy rug."

"Let us buy you a drink," he said as he pointed to the empty quiver, "and you can tell us the story of why you have no arrows in your quiver. I know this will be a fantastic story."

Quote from: Totschlager
Totschlager is feeling abit better now that he has Ioan's talisman... as if something inside him has colmed down. Totschlager looks at the new-comer with the same wary acceptance he has with others in this strange land, for he remembers nothing from beyond a few weeks ago. This new person could be an intimate friend or a deadly foe. Totschlager cares not for the time being, only that he is in good company. He hefts his greataxe comfortably in case (just in case) the new-comer is a harbinger of something less friendly-looking.

Yemam looks to the stranger for an answer and reaches out his hand.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid walked up upon Adam and with a furrowed brow asked him “Adam, I have been wondering. Why did you grab onto the wild horse earlier? It would seem to be foolhardy though undoubtly brave to grab onto a frightened and out of control animal?” The question was posed with genuine desire for understanding without hint of condemnation.

The first one, what’s this, a Giogoto. I had heard rumors of their existence but I never thought my eyes would let allow me to see one. I almost seemed strange but I sense no deceit from this one.
“It seems I have no choice my friend, but fear not where I am from there is always someone watching over me, whether I want to or not.”

Next his eyes fell upon the other. This one is definitely not from here. Hmm, I never know what to make of strangers especially ones how look like they can handle themselves. Wait what’s this, for a second there was almost a moment of aggression in that one. This one will have to be watched he wondered, but in this instant it didn’t matter. Marius had never seen the hand gesture before, but figured it was some sign of respect or in the very least a greeting.

“Thank you my friend I sincerely hope so” Marius gave a quick smile and took a small bow hopping the man would understand his gesture of mutual respect.

And then came the one who spend much time looking me over, his eyes searching for all signs of who I was, a clue to my profession, identity, and certainly the ability to handle myself.

“Fair traveler, please call me Marius. A drink would be most gracious. My quiver, oh right, lets just say that is an old family tradition, you know to keep the thieves and ruffians at bay.”

Marius’s eyes quickly moved to the side to the man who heft his axe. “My friend please, you can relax. I truly mean no harm, besides if I wanted to cause you harm I’m sure I had plenty of opportunities up till now.

Last, but certainly not least, Marius allowed his vision to focus on the one with long hair mixed with braids and a belt full of gear. Following the lead of this newcomer, Marius looks up to the sky and wonders … is this man crazy or have the spies from his homeland reached here as well. If the latter were true then caution would have to be applied to the situation as always.

“Your friend Locke is a gracious host and I gladly accept his offer to pay for my drink. As for the meal I’m sure I’ll enjoy that too. Tell your friend I said thank you. On second thought that would simply be rude, I’ll tell him myself.” Marius looked up to the sky once more, “thank you for the drink. I accept.” With that he reached out and shook the strangers hand.

“Now my new found friends to the Raven’s Roost let us get that drink. I’m sure you have stories to tell as well, though they will hardly compare to anything I have to say! Ha, come we waste valuable drinking time.”

Marius thoughts began to wonder again of things distant past, his father mostly. What have I gotten myself into this time? I know dad, I know … it’s going to be great.

Totschalger notices a beautiful woman standing at the fringes of the wedding party. Instead of paying attention to the toasts, she is watching your group.

((One more day to let the party flesh out the introduction of Marius to the group. Story picks up speed tomorrow.))

Quote from: Totschlager
To Marius: We shall see how the others treat you, but as for me, I welcome you to our ragtag band of displaced travellers. I do not know my name, but you may call me Totschlager. Some people tell me I am from Falcovia, but I do not remember anything before a few weeks ago. I travel with these men who have become my friends for they have fought with me, healed me, and comforted me. You seem displaced as well as we, so I welcome you to our group and hope you may live up to the comraderie of which I still feel unworthy.

To the rest of the group: Perhaps I have been too long from the glance of feminine beauty, but it seems to me that that woman is very keenly interested in us. Were it not for the eagle tatooed to my forehead and Ioan's penchance for flatulance, I would venture to say she was enamored. But, no, I think she gazes on us for different reasons. What think the rest of you?

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache

He then follows the ale, and tries something new... with a gesture, and a bow of his head, he invokes a blessing upon himself...

Eagle's Splendor

His companions may notice an immediate change in his countenance (OOC: Charisma +4). They DEFINITELY notice him striding confidently towards the lady in question.

Ioan bows deeply.

"Milady, forgive the intrusion, but my companions and I just happened to notice your furtive attention." He smiles, and miraculously there is no food in his teeth, and his halitosis is in remission.

It is, quite literally, a miracle.

He continues: "No, no, don't worry... you weren't staring, and we're not upset. Nor are we the rough sort who might take your gaze the wrong way, and then take the advantage."

"We are just..." he shrugs, and the slight stoop in his shoulders appears gallant "...curious."

Were Totschlager not hindered by his lingering suspiscion that a wife waited for him somewhere, he would try to assist Ioan in his flattering conversation with the woman. But as it is, Totschlager cannot but be surprised at his friend's current couthness.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
To Totschlager: “Displaced travelers, ha I like that. Falcovia you say, well I have never been there, but I have heard of such a place. And you can’t remember anything. My friend I am truly sorry, I can’t imagine a worst fate than not knowing who I was in a place such as this. The dark powers have truly been unkind to you. But if strangers are willing to stand by you, heal you, and comfort you, then I would like to add myself to the list. I will work hard to live up to that camaraderie, though I suspect it will not be much of a challenge. Damn I did it again, by that I do not mean that your comrades are worthless, it’s just well … I’m me. Ha. What’s this?”

Marius’s pats Toschlanger on the back and lets his eyes follow the Giogoto as he casts a spell in attempts to identify it. I have to get that one’s name he thinks to himself, otherwise this will continue to be awkward. He follows the Giogoto and whispers to him, “before this day is over I have to get your name my friend.” He then turns his attention to the lady attempting to gauge anything from her behavior or stance. “My lady is something amiss?”

Quote from: Unkabear
Needless to say Hassid is more than dumbfounded by Ioans actions. He had noticed the lady, but was not going to make anything of it. Hassid still was not sure if he would be taken with the morning and he was enjoying a violence free day. Even if he was not it would be even more imperative that he not act upon his impulses. This would be his new home. So instead of joining the others where he might act inappropriately Hassid remained calm and still and watched…still nurturing the same glass of wine.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The beautiful woman opens her mouth to speak. She is interrupted by a loud shout, "You cur!"

The crowd spins and a relative silence falls.

A well-dressed man in the wedding party is standing. The remains of a drink dribble down the grooms face. Everyone... the bride in particular... stands in shock.

"You are a lier and a cheat! You have dishonored my sister with your catting! And I will have satisfaction, you scoundrel!"

The groom rises, his face flushed, his hair wet. The bride pulls at his arm, a question on her face. He shrugs her away as if she were not there.

"Who do you call scoundrel. You son of a whore...." an older woman who resembles the bride screams.

An older man sitting next to her blasts to his feet, "How dare you! Gustaf, you must defend the family."

The man who started all this draws a blade, "I intend to father... I intend to! Duel me. And the winner takes the prize!"

With a shocked look, the bride turns to her husband... who has no glance for her. "What is he..."

With a flourish, the groom draws his blade as well. "It is well your family has gathered. For they shall bury you soon and I shall avenger her honor."

And the bride faints...

Quote from: Yemam Silverman

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius thinks to himself, interrupting a lady, now that’s just plain rude. He watches as emotions begin to run high, his head turns as each of the obviously disrupt man speaks angrily. Wow this is starting to get good, a fight for a woman, like in the stories he heard as a child and then one pulls a blade – and with that Marius remembers this isn’t a story. Just then Yeman rushes past him, “No wait, damn it. Oh well might as well.”

Marius rushes toward Yeman and stands between him and the other man and howls, “Put the weapons down. Now! Look around you half twits, it isn’t just you here, there are other people as well, and judging from how quickly your emotions have run out of control, you two aren’t the only ones who are going to get hurt. This is a time of celebration, not fighting. Put them down now!”

A small thought enters his mind, oh great another mess, why can’t people enjoy a nice party without it always escalating to violence.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid sighs. He truly hopes that this encounter would not end in blood. A marriage begun in blood would be a strained one. And the brides reaction to this spoke volumes. Though it would seem the men had allowed strong drink to cloud their minds. Even if his companions had not stepped into the middle of the warring parties Hassid knew that he would have placed himself there. But their placement ensured that his blade would be found in their midst.

He stood in one graceful motion placing the wine down never to be returned to and began to walk over to the growing group. As he walked he drew his Falchion making sure that the metal of the blade rasped against the leather of its sheath. He then placed himself before the brother of the bride and looked him in the eyes with pity. “Please do not cause me to spill your blood this day; this should be a day of joy and festivities. I would not find pleasure nor joy in the spilling of your blood, but will do so if you pursue your current course of action.” Then his face turned from pity to a hard stare “Put your sword away!” Hassid commanded in a soft tone as he leveled the massive sword, the mans face reflecting in the mirror finish of the blade.

Quote from: Adam Godson
Adam watches his companions with admiration. They are helping others to see the truth. Ugly words, drink, and weapons make a bad combination. Instead of moving toward the group he makes his way to the main door. He doesn't block it, but stands near in case he needs to.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The group moves into action, pressing the two combatants apart. They strain and push to get at each other. Reason has left their eyes. They shout back and forth at each other.

"You don't deserve her!"

"She loves me, and you stole her. And dishonored my sister!"

The bride has begun to sob. Her mother tried to console her. The bride's father has joined in the mass trying to get to the groom. It is taking all the parties efforts to keep the warring parties apart.

"You are just jealous. I will have my satisfaction."

"I saw you with her! This morning! On the day you married my sister!"

The groom turns to Yemam, who is holding him. "Let me at him! He can't have her!"

He is not sane. The bride's brother is not sane.

Luckily, the town guard is arriving.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid at the sounding of the town guard began to sheath his blade with a flat stare. The threat of a blade would not dissuade these people, and short of the spilling of blood Hassid was not sure that any resolution could be found. But then perhaps the guard would deal with them.

With his blade sheathed he stepped back. Part of the reason was to offer room for the approaching guard, but another part was to ensure that Hassid was not the one spilling blood. Though for his cool exterior there was a hunger in Hassid that he sought to quench. He was still ready to move to intervene or draw his sword in an instant. But did what he could to appear a non aggressor. There were enough of them in the wedding party that Hassid did not need to add to the madness.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam does his best to hold the groom back and ensure that the two arguing parties do not turn to blows. He hears the town guard rushing in and only thinks to himself that this better not end in himself and his new friends being held responsible.

Looking at the groom Yemam says, "Now, I ask again. Please reconsider your actions. This will lead to nothing but unnecessary bloodshed and imprisionment. Do you honestly want your marriage to start with your death...one way or another?"

With his senses attuned, Ioan can tell that the two combatants are dazzled... enchanted by some form of mind control. But who did this to them? That he cannot see. He does know, however, that this is more than the result of a simple spell. It takes time to bring two people who should know better to this kind of violence and threat.

The groom has completely forgotten his bride. So has her brother. This fight is much more personal. And it's obvious it revolves around a woman. Several members of the group look about, trying to find some kind of instigator. At different times, they all see a young boy... perhaps ten years old... watching from a distance. They never see him for long. And after the whole encounter, they all report seeing him in a different spot.

The town guard wades in. They are good at their jobs. No one is injured... more than they cause themselves. However, the groom and the bride's brother continue to shout insults as they are dragged away. The bride's family hustles her away as soon as possible. The primary conflict has served to spark many other smaller quarrels to flame up... but none of them show the intensity that the primary battle had.

Within minutes, the main mess is cleaned up by the guard. Statements are taken. And the party atmosphere slowly returns.

It is then that the group realize they are late for the meeting with Matton.

Oh well there will be time later. His mind comes into sharp focus upon hearing words of a “hunt.”

“A hunt good sir. Yes the activity is of most importance, but one should never hunt for joy, rather for survival, once you have realized this victory usually follows. But it saddens me to hear the use of these beats – dogs, a bear, boar and wolf. I myself have hunted numerous times and never needed such a brigade of followers.”

With that Marius stops and looks around the room realizing his ego has once again come to the surface as his new friends surely are now watching with wide eyed disbelief, “I did it again didn’t I, ohh well I’m sure it wont be the last time.” Thinking that he may have insulted a lord of some sort, Marius composes himself, sits, nervously watches the shadows and begins sipping his wine. Matton digs into the meal with gusto. If Adam meant something accusing, he completely misses it.

"Ah yes, hunting a stag. Not just any beast, mind you! This hart has a rack with at least 24 points. Truly the king of forest. But I shall bring him down someday. After all, we are predators. He is prey. It is the way of nature."

The meal continues. The group spends the time getting to know each other. Introductions are passed around. Limited back stories as well. Matton turns out to be a generally nice guy. Sure, he's a little shallow. But he seems to mean no malice with his thoughtlessness.

Finally, as the meal begins to wind down, Matton turns the conversation to his original purpose.

"Gentlemen, I have a pair of unrelated business propositions for you. The first is a simple affair, though it may prove dangerous. It is a straightforward bodyguard job. The second is much more difficult but may also be much more important and serious."

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"You know," Ioan says, "We were set upon by a pack of wolves not two days downstream from that spit where we first saw you. If the leader of that pack wasn't a Dire Wolf, you can put a dress on me and call me barmaid."

Ioan pauses, wondering if he's offended the barmaid.

"I'm just sayin'... if that was what you were huntin', we brought it down."

(OOC - this was meant to be posted BEFORE the DM post... whoops! Too slow!)

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius ponders the irony of having another slay the very beast you are striving to slay; many a times his own father had slain his own target in attempt to teach young Marius some humility. "You know dad, I’m not entirely sure it worked," Marius let out a small laugh from under his breath.

“Good sir, a business proposition you say, already I am intrigued. Which one would you prefer we go after first?” Marius let out with great gusto attempting to curtail his enthusiasm for a well-placed challenge. “My friends please forgive I have spoken out of turn once more,” Marius sighed and sat back down. He hadn’t even known his new friends more than a day and already he had insulted them. What is wrong with you?

Marius turned his thoughts inward once more, a practice which might allow him to stop and think before saying something stupid once more. Will I ever be able to think before speaking, especially with the shadows always watching? Losing his focus his mind jumped from thought to thought, a simple straightforward bodyguard job the gentlemen said. Why is it that all the simple jobs turn out to be the biggest and most complicated pains before the night is through.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"There's two kinds of good bodyguards... the kind nobody knows are there, but who see everything coming, and the kind everybody knows are there, and nobody wants to mess with.

I think we can look like the second kind. Whose body needs guarding?"

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius nervously looks to the shadows, gathers his thoughts, and impatiently blurts out, “Well said my friend, well said,” then makes an effort to compose himself and whispers half-heartedly, “See dad, that time I managed to think before speaking.”

Quote from: Unkabear
I could serve as the second Hassid thought before reigning in his thoughts “I have had many years of experience serving as a body guard. It is a simple task, though rarely as simple as it would seem at first.” Hassid said trying not to boast, but to give knowledge to the group that it would be something well within their abilities. “And the other task?” Hassid echo’d the others.

Quote from: Egdar Zahn
Shaking the cobwebs from his head, Egdar brings himself once more into the moment. He has allowed his melancholy to weigh upon him much too heavily and far too long.

"Forgive my impertinence monsiur Matton, but it appears that you have plenty of capable servants to act as bodyguards for whatever purpose you may have. Why pray tell, would you require the humble services of such an entourage as ourselves? You have already born witness to our impotence on the island. I fear that it is an expendable quality that you seek rather than durability."

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam gives a slight nod as if agreement to something and adds, "Yes, I too wish to know more about this little proposition. I mean no offense in asking, but Locke always told me to know what you're getting into before you agree to it."

Yemam looks to Matton for an answer.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius looked toward Hassid and whispered, “though a stranger in this land you may be, it would seem that you and I have more in common than either one of us would like to admit. I am truly honored by your presence.” With that Marius bowed his head low, never taking his eyes of his friend, hoping he would understand the sign of great respect.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid nodded to Marius and in a soft tone replied “It may be so my friend. And I hope that we have long to test your theory together.” The man respected him as…a warrior? Perhaps, though it would be difficult to tell without either testing his mettle or guarding his back. May it not be so, but Hassid could feel in his bones that all too soon he would have to bathe his blade. The sickening in his stomach was not only for the thought of bathing his blade in blood. But also because he knew deep down that he would enjoy it and that was a part of himself that he had been trying to place behind him. Though he did not beat himself up about it as this was a fairly new way of living, and Hassid knew that he would stumble as he grew into it.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Matton laughs genially at Edgar's pointed comment.

"Sir, you would know as well as I that fairly to perform one task does not mean an individual is incapable of performing any task. And what I need is second thoughts in those who would harm me rather than actual draw steel in my defense."

Matton nods to Ioan, "For yes, I am the body that needs guarding. I must make an appearance tonight at a sporting event... for business reasons. However, I have reason to believe that many there may not be happy to see me. I honestly do not believe they will commit premeditated murder upon my person. They are not that capable of that kind of planning or of exhibiting the bravery required to take that risk. But if an easy chance presents itself, I do believe they might act rashly. And you, gentlemen, are there merely to make sure no easy chance to do me in presents itself."

He finishes the last of his meal. Wiping his face with a napkin, he looks at each of you.

"It's a night's work. Three hours at the longest. I need to appear. I need to stick around a reasonable amount of time. At least long enough to show... strength. Perhaps bet on a few of the matches, though I must admit dog fighting is not to my tastes. So... what say you? One hundred gold per man for the evening's intimidation?"

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Aside, to Totschlager... "I'm up for it, but I don't have much left today in the way of invocation. I need a good night's sleep, and my morning prayers. I could heal a couple o' times, but that's about it."

Charisma roll=8... somebody probably heard the aside.

Quote from: Adam Godson
Matton's last comments left a bad taste in Adam's mouth. Although he thought they did appear an imposing group something rankled him about being meat for hire to the like of Matton. More importantly, he didn't want people to associate him with the likes of Matton and the group he would be associating with.

He didn't need the gold, but perhaps others in the party did. As he thought more he realized that the Matton's gold could be used for the benefit of those more needy than Matton. He would donate the gold to those in need.

These thoughts helped ease his trouble mind, but he still didn't like being Matton's "show of strength."

Turning to Matton he briefly states.

"I will participate in your little ruse, but only as protective force if someone should directly attack you. I will not attack anyone on your behalf or do them bodily harm. The minute you begin to belittle or berate others I will leave your side immediately. I'm here to protect a brother under the Lord and nothing more."

Adam looks to the remainder of the group to see who else will joint.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid nodded, “With a strong show of force only fanatics and true professionals would dare move against you.” And those are in rare supply. Hassid already knew that he would be placed at the side of Matton. But he still couldn’t shake the feeling that he would have to bathe his sword soon.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam makes a quick look around to make sure no one or nothing is looking at this meeting. He specifically looks for the small boy from before, but is looking out for the well being of the group. He smiles as the rest of the group start to agree to Maton's proposition.

"Its seems my friends are in general agreement over this. I throw my hat into the race as well. I'll protect you from harm, but I can't shake the feeling that there is something else you might not be telling us. Or maybe that's what the second job is all about."

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius scanned the room and attempted to get a sense of things, already they were getting complicated, and more by the minute, judging from how Adam was reacting. Marius didn’t want to admit it, but he agreed more with his friend he met earlier in the day, rather than the likes of this supposed Lord who he neither knew nor completely trusted, and playing the fool wasn’t something he had in mind. Then there was something Hassid had said, true fanatics and professionals would probably be scare, but if this "lord" truly had enemies that were willing to move against him in public they would hardly be simple opponents. Marius always enjoyed a challenge; it gave the opportunity for great stories later, but the tale of this day already had trouble written all over it, “oh well can’t back out now,” he half mumbled.

“I stand with you my friends, after all what kind of person would I be if I left you to the folly of men,” he blurted out boastfully, then turned to Hassid, “don’t worry my friend, regardless of what happens I’ve got your back.” Last he leaned in toward Yemam and nervously whispered, “just the same I would feel better knowing that our friend Locke could keep an eye on the shadows for me, never know who is watching, and two pair of eyes is than one.”

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Matton claps his hands in a gesture of joy.

"Wonderful! I truly appreciate this. The fights begin at midnight," with a look at Totschlager, "in the Falkovian quarter. 123 Bog street. If any patrolling soldiers confront you, tell them you are there as my guests. They will direct you to the site. You won't be able to get into the fights without a patron so meet me there a few minutes before the strike of the clock tower."

Then smile then leaves his face and you are reminded that he can look cruel.

"There is the other matter... which as I said, is much less clear. But it may affect this entire realm of Invidia. Something dark is moving against the Lady of this land. I know it. She is not herself. We used to be... well, she used to love me. I love her still. And I think she still loves me. But something or someone is controlling her. Initially, she would not allow me to come to her. But lately, she has disappeared. She should be here... at this carnivale. She has attended every previous year. I have made inquiries and while the civil service maintains everything as best they can, they are worried. She has disappeared. Mysterious orders from her show up."

The sincerity on Matton's face are obvious.

"I have to find her. I have to save her. But I need help. Will you help?"

Quote from: Unkabear
At last there was something within this noble that moved Hassid. He nodded to the final words and replied "We will help you in this task" He was fairly sure that he would be speaking for them all. "The fall of a ruler of any land will lead to its corruption or destruction. I cannot let this happen as I have witnessed in the past." Too often Hassid even took part in small ways to the destruction of the Sarcosan Nation. He could not stand aside and let this happen to his new home.

It was strange, but Hassid began to realize at that moment that he was no longer in the same place. He could feel it in his bones, something that he had been ignoring up to that point. Perhaps this "Ravenloft" was nothing but mist and will dissapear in the morning, but Hassid doubted that. This was a new place, and a place to start anew. Things were different here, but with the help of his new friends Hassid knew that he could become the person that his master had wanted him to be. And at the same time he could preserve this new home.

"Tell us more. What led to her dissapearance, and what kind of messages have been appearing to be said from her command?"

His hesitation to serving this man lessened. He still did not fully trust him, but his actions and requests did not fully require him to. Besides, he would have his friends there to help support him and he them.

He lets his voice trail off for a moment. "But what that hunch is not too big of a concern at the moment. I assume we will get to that affair after we are done protecting you."

Yemam makes another scan of the room now. Once to specifically look for the child in all black and once to make sure no one else has taken an interest in the group meeting again. Maybe its the tension of the conversation, or the mysterious recent occurrences, but Yemam has a gut feeling that something is watching him. Mentally he thinks...::It better not be you, Locke::

Fortunately, those who have come to know Ioan can probably read him just well enough to know that he's in.

Ioan realizes that while his plate is mostly clean, there are scraps on the plates next to him.

"No sense letting these go to waste," he says helpfully, and then begins helping himself. It's probably a good thing he wasn't sitting next to Matton.

"We're workin' tonight. You know the lore... 'though there be no rest for the wicked, they do get a last meal.'"

As he polishes off nearby scraps he can be heard to mumble things about the interpretation of this particular scripture, and the practice of substituting extra food for lost sleep.

Quote from: Egdar Zahn
Under his breath Egdar mutters:
"Meddling in local politics that we scarcely comprehend seems to be our emerging forte."

Egdar reflects on another charismatic leader that offered a 'business opportunity'. Are we to be incinerated once again to promote the local self-absorbed paragon?

Other coincidences play in the mind of the courtier... Captain Timothy mentioned that he was going to attend the dog fights at midnight; now we are to be attending the event. A mysterious lady of note lingered at the edge of the wedding; now we seek just such a figure. The wheel of fate seems to be spinning and again we appear at the hub. In this cursed land, such a thing can only bode ill.

"Monsieur Matton, if we are to go about the carnivale seeking clues as to the whereabouts of this Lady, might you give us some way of identifying her? While I am certain the the civil authorities would recognize her visage, as newcomers we lack such familiarity."

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius watched as his companions each took a turn to speak their mind and listened for the wisdom in their voice. There was always something to learn if one only took time to listen, especially to those willing to share and teach. Though he had only known them for less then a day, he felt their strength not just as individuals, but as a group.

Marius observed as they ate their food, and now watched Ioan eat scraps of the plates, none of them had felt any ill effects thus far, he lowered his guard for a moment, attempting to easy the tension he felt, looked to the shadows and took a bite, “not bad.” He enjoyed the rest of his meal, though not as warm when originally served, it still tasted better than rations. He ate and listened to the rest of the conversation, sipping wine to ease the meal.

Marius waited for Edgar to finish and turned to him, “my friend you bring up many valid points, but if I may offer a suggestion? I believe it would be much wiser to concentrate our efforts one task at a time, the first being guarding sir Matton. Though the second task is also of great importance, splitting our focus may bring more harm then good. Well at least that’s my two coppers worth, but I’m a simple soul,” Marius smirked while taking a bite of his food. He realized that he most likely came of rather arrogant but at this point he didn’t care. The group thus far seemed to accept him, and if they were capable of accepting Ioan and his unique quirks, they would most likely accept his own. He continued to eat watching the group and nervously scanning the shadows.

Matton listens to all the group.

The boy in black is nowhere in sight.

"I agree that the first priority is our business tonight. But we have time before that to discuss the matter of Lady Gabrielle."

He sips a glass of water, obviously composing his thoughts.

"The last time I saw Gabrielle was here at the carnivale... one year ago. She and I had been together for almost a full year. I had decided to finally propose. I knew she was vistani. And I will admit that at first, what I saw in her was purely physical. Although a vistani woman who has risen to the level of ruling a realm indicated she was much more than just a beautiful face. But still... she is vistani and that has certain implications. You understand?"

"But her beauty and her intense intellect won me over. Society be damned! She is my true love."

Another sip of water.

"So... one year ago, we were here in Karina. During the last night, a man... a stranger I had never seen before... came to the ball. In retrospect, he had some kind of power - magic of some kind. It is the only explanation. I honestly have no recollection of what he looks like! But the next day I was thrown from her mansion. And I have never been allowed back. Since that day, she has not been seen in public. The official word is she has been ill. I don't believe that. And then, she has not been sighted here this year."

"To recognize her, look for the most beautiful vistani woman not with the local caravan."

Quote from: Adam Godson
Adam listens to the conversation as he eats his meal. He finds it enjoyable and he allows himself to enjoy it while the others converse. He will let Edgar do the talking as the man knows his way around a conversation.

Adam enjoys the time with his friends. He pushes his unfinished plate to Iaon leaving him the best pieces of meat and vegtables.

"Enjoy my friend for I am full."

As he leans back in his chair to digest his food he wonders what the night may bring. In the back of his mind the thought slips in-- your in Ravenloft so it won't good.

A grim smile crosses his face as he continues to watch the party converse with Matton.

Quote from: Egdar Zahn
Egdar knows that the party has yet to be told the true intentions of Matton on either of these 'opportunities'. Thus far, thier host holds all of the cards and has not yet had a reason to tip his hand. Gambling on the public setting and Matton's desire to retain the party for service, he makes an attempt to goad his mysterious host into losing a modicum of control...

"Ahhh...say no more. I begin to understand, ze rooster has been cuckolded and wishes now to re-enter ze hen house, no? Perhaps ze dog fight is merely compensating for something, yes? Nod, Nod, wink, wink, know what I mean?"

Feigning an imprudence born of too much wine, Egdar continues...

"That just goes to show you the fickle nature of women and power. Doubly so when it's the woman who is in power. Take my advice, friend, let her go! You are better off free than fettered to a gypsy wench."

Watching Matton for any signs of anger or defensiveness, Egdar carefully gauges his retorts so as to loosen his hosts tongue without pushing him to rage.

"You said yourself the hunt is the real fun. What does it matter that she now broods in her castle? <Pause> Unless it is the power that you are after... thwarted ambition can be a painful thing."

"So tell me then, why do you go to see the dogs? Are they to chase the other rooster away?" Egdar proceeds to laugh unduly at this pathetic display of witicism.

Hassid listened to the words of all the men as he rested the silverware upon his plate and leaned back to listen. He did everything within his power to hold his face straight. Hassid would have before been following the same thought pattern as Edgar. But this was his chance to change. Hassid had to believe that the noble was not what he thought he was at first sight. The chance to be someone else gnawed at him. But to speak now would only sow dissention within the group, as well as show weakness. The noble may or may not be who he says, he may or may not be an enemy, there may or may not be enemies about them.

There are too many dividing factors and not enough information to make a solid decision. Hassid believed that they should move forward. Besides, coin had worth in this world. A hundred Gold would not go amiss.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
Matton does indeed react with anger... not violent anger, but certainly the words of Edgar hurt him.

"Sir! I can see the wine of this fair city has addled your mind. Perhaps you should take some time to rest before your employment tonight. I am only interested in bodyguards that are well focused."

He pushes his chair back from the table.

"I myself have some preparations to make. I hope to see you there."

Matton rises and makes a curt nod to Edgar, then a slightly deeper nod to the others.

"And, finally, I love her. I hope you someday know this feeling... and never feel the loss."

The words sting Edgar as Matton walks away.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius listened intently as Edgar posed his words to the supposed “lord,” still unconvinced that Matton was worthy of such a title. He finished his meal, put his wine down, and drank some water. He did not know whether Edgar was indeed drunk or acted the part, having known him for a mere few hours, but the words he spoke were meant to sting, one way or another. For once he kept his mouth closed and watched the conversation unfold.

As the converstation came to a close, Marius saw Matton’s expression of anger, which brought a smile to his face, though he did his best to hide it. Somehow seeing pompous people get put in their place always stirred a happy feeling within him. Marius acknowledges Mattons nod and lowers his own head.

“Right, we’ll see you there. Farewell,” Marius spoke wittingly and turning to face Edgar. He wanted to congratulate him on a fine display of words, but the situation didn’t permit it, instead Marius simply smiled.

Hassid kept his face neutral during the encounter. The Noble may or may not be worthy of his position. He may or not be stringing the group along in some sick game. Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam sat at the table for a minute shocked at what had just transpired. What are Edgar's intentions in this? He could only hope that Matton wasn't seriously offended.

Yemam stands as Matton gets up to leave. "We will be there on time Matton and then later we will find your love. You have a good day."

Quote from: Egdar Zahn
As Matton turns from the table, Egdar looks around in shocked amazement and loudly asks around the table "What!? Why is he angry all of a sudden? Did I say something wrong?"

Once Matton and any of his obvious cronies have left, Egdar looks around the room afterword to see if anyone is paying any undue attention to the party.

Spot= 25 !

Feeling confident that he can converse freely, Egdar addresses his companions:

"That man can be trusted as far as he can be thrown. And believe me I would love to trust him alot more. If you take my meaning...

But I forget myself, perhaps it is simply because our newfound colleagues are unfamiliar with the Lands of the Mist that they agree so eagerly to accept Mr. Matton's 'offer'.

The Falkovnians are bloodthirsty killers who throw children to the dogs for sport. They are lead by the tyrant Vlad Drakov (spits on the ground), a butcher who delights in subduing peaceful nations and then plundering them. That they are in this place at all is menace enough. That we are to accompany a man into thier den who will literally throw us to the wolves without hesitation makes this proposition even less apealling. Believe me 100 pieces of gold is nothing for your lives."

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"You're serious, then? It's not dogs fighting the dogs, but kids?"

Ioan shakes his head...

"Matton's body won't be the one I'm guarding, if that's so. Look for me in the pit."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
In the wake of Matton's abrupt departure, no one seems to be paying any undue attention the party. The waiter continues to serve the group wine as long as they choose to stay seated.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius turns to Edgar, “My friend please lower your voice, just because no one is watching, doesn’t mean no one is listening,” anxiously watching the shadows, the look on his face of shear horror, as if he was expecting the shadows to right out come alive and kill him on sight.

Marius lowers his voice, “I agree with you my friend. I have heard rumors of how hospitable the Falkovians are. What you have just spoken confirms those rumors.” He looks around to the party, “I’m sure all here concur with just how far we can trust Matton, but …” he looks at Hassid then back to Edgar, “but I told my friend Hassid that I would watch his back tonight and I have no intentions on going back on my word. After all in the Lands of the Mist where friends are scarce, what kind of friend would I be?”

With that Marius turns and walks toward Hassid, as he makes his way past Yemam he stops and pompously exclaims, “tell me Locke didn’t like that, just try.” He continues and stands by Hassid, “I follow the group whatever choice is made. Now can we please leave this place, all this talk of throwing us to the wolves is making me rather tense.”

Turning to Edgar, Adam begins to talk.

"Nicely done. Not all cutting and slicing needs to be done with a knife. I believe you've done a good job of exposing some of our "friends" true intentions. Unless our friend is an excellent bluffer I don't believe he means for any intentional harm to befall us. Not that he will stick around if things go bad."

Turning to the rest of the group Adam continues speaking.

"With this disturbing news that Edgar just provided about potential victims for the dog fights it is imperative that this group attend the event with Matton this evening. I will not sit idly by and let innocents be killed. I suggest we head into the streets to gather whatever information we can about our friend Matton, his precious lady, and the fights this evening."

Rising from the table Adam drops enough gold to pay for the entire party's meal. He will not be beholden to Matton for even a meal.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"Amen, and Amen. Let's go."

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam smiles at Marius as he walks by with his comment and looks to the sky. "Yes...I agree Locke. It was impressive."

He looks to Marius. "Yes, Locke and I did enjoy your eloquent way of talk. Lets get going for now and when this night is over we all may talk a little more."

Yemam stands with the rest of the group. "So where are we off to?"

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid stood from the table and walked over to stand next to Marius. “What we need most of all my friends is information. There will be those that will have more information about Matton and these “Dog Fights”. Let us also not break up, for if we do I believe that harm would fall upon us. Let us stay together and as a group discover more about our Noble friend.” And if Matton’s intentions are not pure, broken the group would be easier to pick off or pick up for what nefarious purpose he may have in mind.

"As well we may find more information about the Lady of this land and the real reason that she has shunned him from her home. Rumor of the masses tend toward more truth than not I have found. Though we may need to be cautious of what we learn until we can discern the truth from the fable.”

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius watched and listened intently as Hassid spoke, “divide and conquer,” he spoke softly. “We all know what needs to be done, let us pool our resources together and find what info we may, about sir Matton, his enemies, the fights, and the Lady.”

Though still nervous, Marius breathed a sigh of relief knowing that even though his mouth might have gotten the better of him, this time he would not be alone. He looked around toward his new friends and smiled.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The group heads out among the party, seeking information. Some they could find, some proved difficult.

Matton - You find many able and willing to talk about Matton. And what they have to say falls into one of two general camps. Either he is a great man, a pillar of the community, a true friend, an astute business man, a hunter of renown. Or he is a backstabbing opportunist, a moral lout, an abuser of women's virtue, addicted to drink, a cruel killer. Those arrayed with Matton are typically rich noble men of Invidia. Those arrayed against him are typically not... in one sense or other. Perhaps they are poor. Or a woman. Or from another land.

Matton's enemies - Matton is a businessman. A ruthless businessman good at what he does. As such, he has left a trail of men and women 'beaten' on the field of commerce. And these looser are not all gracious about it. Any one of them would gladly tell you how Matton cheated them. Anyone with a decent financial sense will tell you he just outmaneuvered them. Either way, there is no shortage of people who do not wish him well. But no sense that their is a organized effort to kill him.

the dog fights - Most you talk to have no idea what you speak about. The dog fights seem to be a well kept secret. The few who do know what you are asking about assume you are also already in on the secret. They quietly... but enthusiastically... talk about seeing you there. Any questions about what goes on there are answered with a grin and a variation of 'the first rule of dog fights is you don't talk about the dog fights.'

Lady Gabrielle - She seems to be an interesting figure. Ask about her as a leader and you'll get generally positive answers. Mostly because she tends to not get involved. Ask about her personal life and you'll get nothing but condemnation. She is a party animal. She goes through men like other women go through dresses.

((If you want more information, send more detailed questions. And send a Gather Information roll.))

Quote from: Adam Godson
As Adam moves through the crowd he targets nobles that seemed aligned with Matton and know about the "dog fights." He asks them specifically who would be attending the fights that would want to harm him.

Also he tries to determine whether those that know about the fights have anything in common such as nationality, wealth etc.

Marius’ anxiety though lessened still surges. He makes all efforts to concentrate on the task at hand. He moves among the crowd attempting to divulge information about Matton’s business associates. Specifically he is interested in the nationality and race of those who have been most wronged and/or swindled by him. As for Lady Gabrielle he tries to see if there is any common ground among those who like or dislike her lifestyle (nationality, class, etc.), is it easy to get an audience with her? He keeps a close eye on the rest of the party members so as not to get separated.

Gather Info = 19

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam follows Marius through the crowds, asking the common folk about Lady Gabrielle. He wants to know her man before Matton, if Matton was in fact "one of her many men", and if anyone has heard any news recently about her. Its been Yemam experience that the poorer people have always been better at keeping their eyes and ears open for such things.

Gather Information = 20 (not natural)

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid mingles with the crowds and gathers what he can on a few drinks with the guardsmen.

Gather Info = 4 (Looks like I don’t get very much information…but I think I know all of the names of the worldly barmaids in a four league radius)

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Listen=8
Gather Information=2

Ioan knows quite well that this is not something he's good at. He moves with the other party members, in particular staying close to Totsy, and listens as best he can.

His one attempt at actually engaging in conversation to gather information results in funny looks and the hurried departure of the "victim" of his awkward gathering.

He looks at his friends "Sorry. I got nothin'. But I can get lots of it."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
As the group delves deeper into the party, some have success in trying to uncover more information. Others do not.

Yemam finds a batch of obvious locals, resting in what appears to be a back alley. When asking about Gabrielle's recent list of men in her life, he unknowingly sparks a long spirited argument as the five men and two women try to accurately recreate the list of the last ten men known to be 'dating' Gabrielle. There are lots of 'no, he was before that one because that was when Droen died, remember' and 'but I thought that one was killed in the accident and that's why she picked up with Cottleaux, the foreigner'. The general consensus is that Matton was the last. The rumor mill dried up post Matton. The one previous to Matton was a man named M'Ainenbar. His relationship with Gabrielle ended when was killed in a hunting accident.

Marius also has some success in pulling together some information on Matton's enemies list. Unfortunately, it fits no pattern any of you can detest. There is a long list of Invidians that Matton has bested in getting contracts to buy and ship wine. But there are just as many from other realms; Barovia, Arkendale, Falkovia, Borca, Dementlieu & Kartakass are the most frequently sited.

When asking about an audience with Lady Gabrielle, the most frequent response Marius gets is an appraising glance up and down and then a curt 'No'. A few indicate Edgar may stand a chance, if there is something... special about him. But the rest of you, no. She doesn't waste her time on the lesser things... in men or in material goods.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid nods to his friends as they finish with their gathering of information and bids farewell to the guards that he had been carousing with to rejoin the others.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"Yemam... does this lady have any LIVING ex-beaus? Other than the guy we're s'posed to be guardin'?"

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius looked around to find his friends and walked toward them, “well it seems that sir Matton has made many enemies, the list is rather long, but distinguished. As for lady Gabrielle, if we need to speak to her better send Edgar, the rest of us seem to be lacking something.” Marius looks himself over and turns to Ioan, “frankly I don’t get it. We all look rather well to me.”

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan smiles at his new acquaintance, knowing with the surety of deep-seated wisdom that the magical gifts granted to those with charismatic bearings are most certainly not Ioan's. But it's nice to not be thought ill of in spite of that.

"Umm... yeah. Talkin' to th' lady would be a chore. Edgy's the man for that, if any of us are. I'm kinda worried about Matton, though. All of the lady's other cast-offs have one thing in common. They're dead."

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam nods to Ioan's statement. "Yes....It seems that not only are they dead...it seems that they all die in what seem to be accidents. I'm not sure what is going on, however that small child we saw earlier is how I think is the culprit. Spooked the horses and was present at that wedding fight. It just oozes bad things."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
After spending some time gathering information, the group finds it is nearing time to meet Matton at the dog fights. The carnivale is still going strong as the group pulls away.

The party drops away quickly only a few blocks from the lightened maze area. Instead, long shadows fill tight streets. It's quiet. This is more like the Ravenloft you are all used to... those of you used to this land. The city shows signs of it's age. Paint is peeling. Some trash from the day litters the streets.

Following easy directions, you arrive in the Falkovian quarter. And it is obvious you have arrived. The first sign something is different is the complete lack of garbage in the streets. Nothing is gaudy but nothing is worn. No peeling paint, no weathered boards. Also, you fairly soon are greeted by an armored street patrol. Four soldiers, fully armed in heavy plate wielding long swords stop you. Luckily, you have been given appropriate pass word. But these soldiers meant business. There was nothing lax in their behavior. The also bore a distinct resemblance to Totschlager. Right down to the hawk tattoo each proudly displayed that Totschlager now hid.

But finally, the group made it's way to a rather well lit door of what looks, from the exterior, like nothing more than a warehouse. Matton is not yet there. Two soldiers stand alert guard.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius anxiety quickly escalades as the party proceeds down the dark streets. He does his best not to jump at each sound in the distance as his eyes leap from shadow to shadow. As the guards leave Marius confusingly looks at the them then Totschlager and back again and finally he whispers, “is there some reason those gentlemen bear a strong resemblance to you my friend or is it mere coincidence? Though by now I have learned there are no such things as coincidence.”

Quote from: Unkabear
Leaving the fair grounds immersing the party into decrepit living areas cemented the need for the festival even greater upon Hassid. And though he was beginning to believe that he was somewhere else, the feeling was all too similar to his home. As they approached the Falkovian section a sense of homesickness washed over Hassid. He had for the past several years been learning and training in such sections of Sharuun.

The professionalism of the Soldiers put him at ease. Professional soldiers followed orders, and would not deviate from them. If they had not had the correct passwords then they would have been escorted out, even if by sword. But it was something that he was willing to bet on. Unless they pushed it there would have not been bloodshed. And now that they were through they would remain as such unmolested. But Hassid was still weary about the “dog fights” as he was feeling more and more the dog that would be fighting. But perhaps not. Perhaps Matton would be true to his word and it would be a simple guard operation.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
As the group stands in the circle of light, waiting for their employer to arive, they glance around the dark orderliness of the Falkovian quarter. It is easy to admire the discipline of the soldiers they have met so far.

Marius notices the shape first.

A tall, slender figure standing on a street corner about a block away, leaning up against a building under one of well space street lanterns. No one saw the figure step into the light. He wears a wide-brimmed hat and a billowing cloak of some dark fabric that seems to drink up the night, making him hard to see clearly. A dark scarf covers the lower half of his face. The man abruptly steps out of the lamplight and is swallowed silently by darkness. Where he was standing, a crumpled piece of parchment lies on the cobblestone sidewalk by the street lamp... the only piece of trash in sight.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius looks to the group to see if anyone else noticed the figure that disappeared into the shadows, his mind floods of images of Drakon and the Kargat. In one instance he turns rather pale as him eyes leap from shadow to shadow.

Marius composes himself, takes a deep breath, and turns to Hassid, “my friend please, watch my back.” He walks slowly and confidently toward the piece of paper left on the ground watching. Already I hate this place, and I wanted to leave the tavern … what was I thinking?

Spot = 5

(ooc: if I manage to get the paper I immediately walk back to the party)

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The paper contains a severed human finger... still wearing an iron signet ring carved with the Falkovian hawk. The paper is scrawled in blood:

the darkness is mine.
the anger is mine.
the vengeance is mine.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid looks at the finger and shakes his head and speaks in a somber tone. “This does not bode well.”

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius sighs and quietly but rather nervously adds, "you speak the truth. I hope that finger did not belong to sir Matton. I may not like him, but in no way did I wish this."

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan screws up his face (well... screws it up more) and examines the finger. He has two questions: 1) Was the finger cut from a living being? and 2) Is it recognizably Matton's?

Heal=15
Spot=21

Jokingly, he says "I could try invoking 'Cure Moderate Wounds' to see who grows out the raw end o' this, but those blessings are gone for the day."

Charisma Roll = -1

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
As the group is discussing the finger and the message, they hear footsteps approaching. Loud footsteps. The footsteps of a man confident and boisterous. As the man turns the corner, they see the feet belong to Matton... looking none the worse for wear.

A grin lights his face as he sees the party waiting for him. With a sweeping wave of his hand, he calls for the party to join him as he heads directly for the door to the warehouse.

From the street you stand on, there are two entrances to the warehouse. The first is a large pair of double doors, tall and wide enough to fit a wagon through. These doors are dark. About 15' from these is a single door, obviously a foot entrance. Light pours under this door. It is this door that Matton strides to. The group joins Matton just as he wraps on the door firmly.

"I am glad to see you all hear!" he says, as the door is opened. Inside the room, two Falkovian soldiers stand. A large black dog sits, his leash is held by the furthest soldier. It is well trained as evidences by its lack of barking or other nervous behaviors.

Matton steps into the room and unbuckles his sword belt. "These boys will take any obvious weapons. Feel free to maintain your backup."

The soldier holding the leash opens a huge locked chest. Inside, numerous weapons lie, rather neatly piled.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Still a bit shaken by the figure who disappeared and left the rather disturbing message, Marius looks around for anyone hidden. He watches Matton as he removes his sword, “well I suppose there is no getting out of this.” He unbuckles the sword of his back and places it in the chest, "It trust nothing happens to this, I rather like the blade."

By now he notices the guards staring at his empty quiver, “ohh that. We’ll I’m only half-elf, which means I only get the quiver. Once I learn how to use it then I’ll get the arrows and hopefully the bow to go with it, until then … it’s a rather unique tradition. Elves go figure.” Marius shrugs.

Marius glimpses toward his companions hoping to get a hint of what they will do or say, especially about the finger or message that came with it, he turns to Matton, “well after you kind sir.” Marius thoughts gather around what Ioan said earlier ‘all of her cast-offs have one thing in common. They’re all dead.’ This promises to get ugly and quickly he thinks to himself, waiting until someone else goes through the door.

Ioan scowls and drops his hammer in the box. Those unfortunate enough to be standing within mumbled earshot may hear him whining half-intelligibly to himself about being both unarmed AND out of proper spells.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam walks up to the box and unbuckles his sword. "Here you go." After the sword is taken, he takes off his bow and hands it to the nice armored gentlemen. "You have a good night."

He smiles and looks around the place, hoping nothing truely happens tonight.

Hassid was weary to give up his sword, but understood the implications of not. He unstrapped the old worn sheath and handed it to the guard and waited for a receipt before progressing.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Watching his companions Marius notices Ioan’s mumbling and to a large degree understands his displeasure. He put a comforting arm around Ioan, “my friend try not worry. I’m sure the higher power you serve would not allow harm to one fine lad such as yourself. Besides we’ve friends like me who would be stupid enough … though having Totschlager around does help.” Marius grined, but he meant what he said. Life had taught him long ago to look within people, for the outside rarely mattered, he only hopped that Ioan would believe his sincerity. Ioan may not think he is much to look at, but being surrounded by fine friends such as these gave him more charm than he realized.

Marius took his arm from around Ioan and smiled. He watched as Hassid removed his weapon and waited … a receipt, now why the heck didn’t I think of that he thought to himself. You were right dad still have a great deal to learn.

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
"Thanks, Marius." Ioan's face brightens. He wasn't expecting this, especially since it wasn't the intended vein of his complaint.

"I'm not worried about my own skin. I'm worried that I won't be able to help."

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The soldier's take the weapons, issue receipts, and make a show of locking the chest. Then the soldier opens the only door leading out of the small office.

Beyond the door, a mostly dark warehouse floor lies. To their immediate left, the party sees the main wagon entrance, barred from the inside. Far to the right, in the back of the warehouse space, you can see two guards, sitting around a small table, playing cards. Another large dog lies at their feet, looking content. It raises it's dark head to watch the party enter. Other than that, the space is filled with boxes, casks, and chests. All stacked high and all labeled with paint in some kind of cypher you aren't familiar with.

Against the far wall, a wide stairway leads downward. Matton leads the way. Standing at the top of the stars, you can see they end at a long landing. A pair of doors opens to the left, back into the space under the warehouse floor. Light spills out to faintly illuminate the landing.

Matton stops the group, "I have three people I have to talk to, and another two that it would be nice if I was able to meet with. I don't want you all hovering over me, but please do stay close. The only attendees who will be obviously armed will be the guards. And they will be on our side should someone attack us. But do not assume the guests are all toothless," he pulls his jacket back to reveal a smaller blade, "and some will be tough even without a weapon. Feel free to hit the bar. Put it on my tab. But stay close enough that if someone gets frisky, you can intervene quickly."

Matton is interrupted by a rousing shout from below. Evidently, something entertaining just happened.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid was glad to receive the receipt and followed along with Matton. After the speech Hassid decided to stay close to Matton. The offer of the bar was alright, but truth be told it was very easy to bribe a barman into slipping something into your drink. Hassid should know, he had done so on many occasions for his previous employer.

Hassid instead decided to follow close to Matton with his Cedeku hidden within the folds of his robes. He motioned to Marius to follow with him and drifted between five and ten paces behind Matton allowing him his privacy, but staying close enough to move if the situation called for it.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam follows Matton's wishes and decides to go a little farther away then Hassid. He moves about ten to fifteen paces away from Matton and walks, looking around for any suspicious activity...and gets a drink spilled into his eyes during the excitement.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius followed Hassid’s lead and followed him staying close and about the same distance from Matton. Marius had experience in watching someone’s back, but it was usually his fathers and his father watched his, much different from the current situation. Furthermore, he was used to the wilderness, and though he enjoyed the city this was the Land of the Mist, the situation was making him rather tense. Being around someone with experience, he remembered Hassid mentioning that he had experience acting as a bodyguard, relieved some of his apprehension. This promises to be a learning experience, Marius smiled, “I hope this goes quickly and smoothly, though somehow I doubt that, “ he said quietly to Hassid.

Staying close to Hassid he watched the shadows trying to ignore the sounds that were likely to make him jump. Great more people than one can count ... have I mentioned how I hate this place he thought to himself.

Spot =12

Quote from: Ioan Nicolae Costache
Ioan looks for a vantage point in a corner somewhere... someplace he can stand and see much of the room, while being in the shadows himself. His half-Vistani face probably won't attract the right kind of attention among the high-born and haughty.

Quote from: Unkabear
Hassid looks to what caught everyones attention trying as well to keep an eye out for those that might use the distraction.

Quote from: DM Van Helsing
The room is crowded. A rough crowd by the look of it. There are two soldiers guarding the entry. The give you nothing more than a once over to make sure you are not obviously armed. Two tough looking women work behind a stocked bar. The variety and quality of the liquor betray the clientèle... or this is a fancy carnivale to celebrate a wine producing region.

Matton makes a beeline for a pair of real shady looking characters. They rise and great him by name. It does not take a trained mind-reader to assess the general attitude of the crowd toward Matton. He is not well liked. He may even be hated. But no one makes an obvious move. Also, no one seems to pay attention to you. Well, almost no one. In the rear corner, an well dressed soldier sits with an attractive young thing on his arm. He immediately notices Totschlager. His eyes seem to drill into the amnesiac of your group... like he knows him from a dark and distant past.

Down in the dog fighting pit, you can hear a body being dragged but you can see nothing as the blood trail leads behind a pair of open doors into what is clearly another floor below the basement you stand in.

((Fell free to interact with anyone. Move yourself about. Don't worry about movement rates, just announce intent and I'll work it out.))

The thug next to Ioan laughs, taking the cleric's question as a joke.

"The dogs of course! But don't worry buddy, next bout will start in a few minutes. You only missed the warm up card."

Hassid, Edgar, Yemam & Marius keep their eyes and attention most fully on Matton. While their employer carries on a low, but intense, conversation with a man wearing an eye-patch. while it is obvious they are in a tense negotiation, it does not seem that those at the table with Matton are potentially bothered by his presence.

The three individuals near Marius and Adam do show signs of an almost unnatural loathing of Matton. They have made no move to this point. But they can also not take their eyes of him. They spit in his general direction and their is much dark muttering about 'his kind' daring to show his face here.

The imperious soldier witting the eye candy, motions for Totschlager to come and join his,. sending the other person sitting as his table away. Totschlager looks around to make sure that the invitation was meant for him before moving to take a seat.

Hassid can tell that at least three of the men in the club do intend to commit violence upon Matton's person. They do not seem like they intend to be obvious about it. Perhaps they will try and wait and ambush Matton in the darkness as he leaves the fights later. Marius studies the potential foes and notices they have had their weapons taken from them as well.

Ioan and Adam have a sick feeling in the pit of their stomach. Ioan is sure he just heard someone sobbing - muffled and distant, not nearby - under all the more immediate sounds of the bar. But then he cannot anymore.

Totschlager has made his way to sit with the commander, who starts a conversation. Totschlager listens intently.

The doors to the club open and Edgar is the first to see a familiar face... Nathan Timothy has arrived. And done so flamboyantly. He's dressed in much finer garb than he wore on the river. He's also greeted by a rousing "Nathan!" cheer. He's well know... and liked... here.

Quote from: Marius Ionescu
Marius listens and watches as the three show their disgust toward Matton, as they spit he looks down hoping that it missed his boots, “Hey, watch it … I just had those cleaned!” he says grimly and gives them a stern look. “Whatever your displeasure with that gentlemen may be, leave my boots out of it!”

He adjusts himself, stands up straight, and leans against the wall “as if watching the shadows wasn’t’ enough, now I have to contend with flying spit. What’s next the tables come alive and swallow us whole?” he turns to his left, “you know this wasn’t such a great place as you made it out to be,” turns back and grins at the three.

Marius ploy works... the two thugs immediately next to him shift their attention from Matton to him. It's an uncomfortable experience. The thug sitting next to Marius at the bar motions to one of the two barmaids. She pulls a mug of some thick ale and slides it down to him.

"So... loudmouth... how did you get in here? I've never seen you at the fights before."

Marius is intently aware of the attention of the man behind him as well. Yemam is in perfect position to see all of this develop.

Nathan waves genially to the crowd. He notices that the group is present and shows a little comically surprise. He also has eyes for Matton... but they are not pleasant. He doesn't let the distaste he obviously feels distract him too long. He does make sure to bump Matton's chair as he walks by, extending an arm to Edgar with a welcoming, "Hail traveler! I see you made it."

Ioan feels his attention torn. He is intensely curious... and nervous... about the pit. He can see and smell fresh blood. The smell of offal is strong as well. But he also knows that Totschlager is deep in quiet conversation with the man behind him. And now, with Nathan arriving and attracting undue attention, he strives to maintain focus.

Adam has noticed a ladder at the northern end of the pit, allowing individuals to climb up or down. He idly wonders if that is the only entrance to the animal pens.

The noise, confusion, and multiple points of interest take their toll on the poor, giogoto cleric... Ioan starts to mumble.

"Nathan's here. Is that good? He hates Vistani. He doesn't like me. I thought he'd come around at the end, but did he really? He hates Matton. Why are we working for him, anyway? Is it the money, or did I just want a chance to see... this..."

He cranes his neck, regaining focus for a moment

"That guy said of course the dogs won. That means the dogs fight something else. Dawn's grace, but I pray it's not kids. Or peasants. Or people at all."

His mumbling goes very low for a moment. Anyone who knows him (and anybody who is watching closely enough) will see that he is praying. But they would have to stand very close indeed to hear him begging the Morninglord for a fresh allotment of spells... even just one or two.

After a moment he looks up, turns, and sees Totschlager. Quietly he moves to stand near his friend.

Quote from: Yemam Silverman
Yemam begins to sweat from the tension in the room. From Nathan's appearance at the fights, to Matton's general dislike here, to the aweful fights going on in the pit. This is not turning out the way Yemam would have hoped.

Seeing the always flaunting Marius distract the crowd almost brought joy to Yemam. It seems that maybe the crowd might even forget about Matton for a moment. This night cannot go by quicker.

Yemam turns to the barmaid. "I'll have whatever it was you just gave him. Looks good." He smiles at her and continues to keep his eyes and ears open, always ready to spring into action to stop an attack.

Marius realized that the unwanted attention was making him extremely uncomfortable but kept up the façade as best he could. At least the attention was of Matton, which I suppose was a good thing. "Excuse me old family tradition coming up," he turned to Yamen and spoke across the thug, “enjoy that drink.
